The frictionless contact problem for a layered composite which consists of two elastic layers having different elastic constants and heights resting on two simple supports is considered. The external load is applied to the layered composite through a rigid stamp. For values of the resultant compressive force P acting on the stamp vertically which are less than a critical value $P_{cr}$ and for small flexibility of the layered composite, the continuous contact along the layer - the layer and the stamp - the layered composite is maintained. However, if the flexibility of the layered composite increases and if tensile tractions are not allowed on the interface, for P > $P_{cr}$, a separation may be occurred between the stamp and the layered composite or two elastic layers interface along a certain finite region. The problem is formulated and solved for both cases by using Theory of Elasticity and Integral Transform Technique. Numerical results for $P_{cr}$, separation initiation distance, contact stresses, distances determining the separation area, and the vertical displacement in the separation zone between two elastic layers are given.
The plane contact problem for two infinite elastic layers whose elastic constants and heights are different is considered. The layers lying on a Winkler foundation are acted upon by symmetrical distributed loads whose lengths are 2a applied to the upper layer and uniform vertical body forces due to the effect of gravity in the layers. It is assumed that the contact between two elastic layers is frictionless and that only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interface. The contact along the interface will be continuous if the value of the load factor, ${\lambda}$, is less than a critical value. However, interface separation takes place if it exceeds this critical value. First, the problem of continuous contact is solved and the value of the critical load factor, ${\lambda}_{cr}$, is determined. Then, the discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation. Numerical solutions for contact stress distribution, the size of the separation areas, critical load factor and separation distance, and vertical displacement in the separation zone are given for various dimensionless quantities and distributed loads.

Crack opening governs many transfer properties that play a pivotal role in durability analyses. Instead of trying to combine continuum and discrete models in computational analyses, it would be attractive to derive from the continuum approach an estimate of crack opening, without considering the explicit description of a discontinuous displacement field in the computational model. This is the prime objective of this contribution. The derivation is based on the comparison between two continuous variables: the distribution if the effective non local strain that controls damage and an analytical distribution of the effective non local variable that derives from a strong discontinuity analysis. Close to complete failure, these distributions should be very close to each other. Their comparison provides two quantities: the displacement jump across the crack [U] and the distance between the two profiles. This distance is an error indicator defining how close the damage distribution is from that corresponding to a crack surrounded by a fracture process zone. It may subsequently serve in continuous/discrete models in order to define the threshold below which the continuum approach is close enough to the discrete one in order to switch descriptions. The estimation of the crack opening is illustrated on a one-dimensional example and the error between the profiles issued from discontinuous and FE analyses is found to be of a few percents close to complete failure.
The problems of the continuity of homomorphisms between Banach algebras have been studied widely for the last two decades to obtain various fruitful results, yet it is far from characterizing the calss of Banach algebras for which each homomorphism from a member of the class into a Banach algebra is conitnuous. For commutative Banach algebras A and B a simple proof shows that every homomorphism .theta. from A into B is continuous provided that B is semi-simple, however, with a non semi-simple Banach algebra B examples of discontinuous homomorphisms from C(K) into B have been constructed by Dales [6] and Esterle [7]. For non commutative Banach algebras the problems of automatic continuity of homomorphisms seem to be much more difficult. Many positive results and open questions related to this subject may be found in [1], [3], [5] and [8], in particular most recent development can be found in the Lecture Note which contains [1]. It is well-known that a$^{*}$-isomorphism from a $C^{*}$-algebra into another $C^{*}$-algebra is an isometry, and an isomorphism of a Banach algebra into a $C^{*}$-algebra with self-adjoint range is continuous. But a$^{*}$-isomorphism from a $C^{*}$-algebra into an involutive Banach algebra is norm increasing [9], and one can not expect each of such isomorphisms to be continuous. In this note we discuss an isomorphism from a commutative $C^{*}$-algebra into a commutative Banach algebra with dense range via separating space. It is shown that such an isomorphism .theta. : A.rarw.B is conitnuous and maps A onto B is B is semi-simple, discontinuous if B is not semi-simple.
This paper is given a full detail of mathematical analyses of input current for novel active type power factor correction(PFC) AC-DC converter of step up-down added electric isolation. These are compared with harmonics components of input current for a conventional PFC converter of electric isolation type. The proposed PFC converter is constructed in using a new loss-less snubber circuit to achieve a soft switching of control device. Also the proposed converter for discontinuous conduction mode(DCM) eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement and reduces the size of components. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form of discontinuous pulse in proportion to magnitude of ac input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Therefore, input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. Particularly, the stored energy of loss-less snubber capacitor is recovered with input side and increases input current from resonant operation. The result is that input power factor of the proposed converter is higher than that of a conventional PFC converter. Some simulative results on computer and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.
A diffusion synthetic acceleration (DSA) technique for the SN transport equation discretized with the linear discontinuous expansion method with subcell balance (LDEM-SCB) on unstructured tetrahedral meshes is presented. The LDEM-SCB scheme solves the transport equation with the discrete ordinates method by using the subcell balances and linear discontinuous expansion of the flux. Discretized DSA equations are derived by consistently discretizing the continuous diffusion equation with the LDEM-SCB method, however, the discretized diffusion equations are not fully consistent with the discretized transport equations. In addition, a fine mesh rebalance (FMR) method is devised to accelerate the discretized diffusion equation coupled with the preconditioned conjugate gradient (CG) method. The DSA method is applied to various test problems to show its effectiveness in speeding up the iterative convergence of the transport equation. The results show that the DSA method gives small spectral radii for the tetrahedral meshes having various minimum aspect ratios even in highly scattering dominant mediums for the homogeneous test problems. The numerical tests for the homogeneous and heterogeneous problems show that DSA with FMR (with preconditioned CG) gives significantly higher speedups and robustness than the one with the Gauss-Seidel-like iteration.
In this paper, a new PWM method is proposed to reduce the input current harmonics of 3 phase PWM rectifier. In the conventional carrier comparison PWM method, a triangular wave is generally used as the carrier wave. However, the large d-axis current ripple by the triangle carrier wave may be a source of large input current THD(Total Harmonic Distortion). In this paper, a new carrier comparison PWM method with saw tooth wave is proposed. Depending on the sector where the voltage command vector places, one of the rising or falling saw tooth wave is selected. To reduce the switching losses of the saw tooth carrier PWM, the discontinuous PWM is also presented. The proposed PWM method can reduce the d-axis current ripple as well as the switching losses. The performance of the conventional and proposed PWM methods is verified by the simulation and experimental results.
