In the tunnelling by blasting, the calculations of charge weight and the estimations of blasting effect have been simply carried out by empirical formulas. Also, it has been rare to consider the impact energy of blasting in numerical analyses. Thus in this study a numerical modeling technique of blasting load is developed and used with the 2 dimensional distinct element method(DEM) to consider the nonlinear behaviour of discontinuous underground structures. TD examine and verify its applicability of the numerical model to actual problems, a blasting of tunnel under an embankment is numerically analysed with DEM. It is examined that the behavior of circumference structures, the displacements of above- and under-ground structures, and the propagation of particle velocities can be known by this numerical analysis. As a result, the blasting load model, proposed by this study, can be applied to actual problems. This model applied with DEM can be used in the examination of structural stability.
Rock joint system makes a heavy effect on the behavior of rock structures. The definition of a 3D rock joint system is very important in 2D or 3D numerical analysis for the prediction of the behavior of a discontinuous rock mass. To enhance the reality of a 3D definition of rock joint system, it is essential to estimate the unbiased statistics of basic geometric attributes of rock joints. In this study, we have proposed the statistical analysis and derived the related equations for an estimation of statistics of joint size and intensity. Geometry of rock joints in 3 dimensional space can be defined by the aggregate of location, size, orientation and intensity. The dimensional limit of survey method and its data makes 3D geometric attributes probabilistic. In the estimation of statistics of joint size, we have discussed the technique to correct the bias from a dimensional limit and derived the equation of 3D joint intensity by stereological approaches.

Numerical modeling of problems having infinite and semi-infinite boundaries is studied using a coupled method of distinct elements and boundary elements. The regions which are restricted on stress concentration area of loading points, excavation surface, and geometric discontinuity in the underground structures, are modeled using distinct elements, while the infinite and semi-infinite regions are modeled using linear boundary elements. Linear boundary elements for infinite and semi-infinite region are respectively composed using the Kelvin's and the Melan's solution, respectively. For the completeness, the boundary element method, the distinct element, and the coupled method of distinct elements and boundary elements are studied independently. The coupled method is verified and is applied to underground structures of infinite and semi-infinite regions. Through the comparison of the results, it is concluded that the coupled analysis may be used for discontinuous underground structures in the effective manner.
This study has been carried out on the Pegmatites, Naedeogri Granites, Nonggeori Granites and Metasedimentary rocks in the middle area of Taebaeksan region to investigate the geochemical properties and possibility of productivity. Pegmatites are characterized by metamorphosed anatectic pegmatite and differentiated magmatic pegmatite, and are mixed type of rare-element pegmatite and mica-bearing pegmatite by the classification of Ginsburg(1979). The petrological type of the igneous rocks is thought to be calcalkali, subalkaline and peralumious. According to chemical variations against D. I., differentiation trends from Naedeogri and Nonggeori Granites through non-mineralized pegmatites to mineralized pegmatites are supposed. From the relationship between oxided and $SiO_2$, pegmatites and Nonggeori Granite have shown similar tendencies and bulk composition of pegmatites and similar to metasedimentary rocks near the intrusives. By judging the correlations of trace elements, it is elucidated that pegmatites adjacent to Naedeogri and Nonggeori Granites have been originated in magma differentiation from these granites and the others have been differentiated by remelting or partial melting from metasedimentary rocks. $Sp_5$, $Sp_8$, and $Sp_9$ pegmatites are considered as productive rocks, and $Sp_4$, $Sp_6$, $Sp_7$, $Sp_{10}$, $Sp_{11}$, and $Sp_{12}$ pegmatites and granites are supposed to have a weak productivity, in terms of element ratios related with Sn mineralizations. Tourmalines in productive pegmatites are formed under the circumstance of Li-poor granitoids and associated with pegmatites, and the others are seemed to be originated in metapelites and metapsammites which are not coexisting with an Al-saturating phase. Three types of chemical zoning are noticed in tourmalines: (1) apparently homogeneous compositional patterns, (2) a continuous core-to-rim zoning and, (3) a discontinuous core-to-rim zoning. From results of EPMA of tourmalines, Al, Mg and Ca increase closer to rim, while Fe decreases.
The completely mixed flow and plug flow (CAP) water quality model was developed for streams with discontinuous flows, a condition that often occurs in low base flow streams with in-stream hydraulic structures, especially during dry seasons. To consider the distinct physical properties of each reach effectively, the CAP model stream network can include both plug flow (PF) segments and completely mixed flow (CMF) segments. Many existing water quality models are capable of simulating various constituents and their interactions in surface water bodies. More complicated models do not necessarily produce more accurate results because of problems in data availability and uncertainties. Due to the complicated and even random nature of environmental forcing functions, it is not possible to construct an ideal model for every situation. Therefore, at present, many governmental level water quality standards and decisions are still based on lumped constituents, such as the carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand (CBOD), the total nitrogen (TN) or the total phosphorus (TP). In these cases, a model dedicated to predicting the target concentration based on available data may provide as equally accurate results as a general purpose model. The CAP model assumes that its water quality constituents are independent of each other and thus can be applied for any constituent in waters that follow first order reaction kinetics. The CAP model was applied to the Geum River in Korea and tested for CBOD, TN, and TP concentrations. A trial and error method was used for parameter calibration using the field data. The results agreed well with QUAL2EU model predictions.

This study was carried to find out the soil characteristics of landslide site and to develope landslide prediction method by seismic refraction prospecting. For these aims, landslide condition and travel time were investigated at 68 Landslide sites over the country during 1990 to 1991. The results were as follows. 1. The surface of rupture was included mainly in C layer. Its Hardness was less than 3kg / $\textrm{cm}^2$ at the upper pare of landslide. 2. When the profile line length was 20m, the range of travel time was 40 to 90 msec. The travel time did not differ between bedrocks. 3. Refraction distance ranged from 1 to 7m and mean of that was 2.5m. Travel time was increased according to receiving distance without large variance in the refraction distance but that was appeared large variance out of the refraction distance on slope that has shallow soil depth and discontinuous ground surface. Therefore, the spread distance must be shorten to 10-l5m. 4. The seismic velocity at the first layer(layer of rupture) was less than 500m1sec by degree of weathering and the velocity at the second layer decreased in order of Granite> Granitic gneiss >Sedimentary rock. 5. The first layer observed by seismic refraction was contained C layer that has parent material and weathered rocks of hardness 10-20kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 6. Among the range of seismic velocity was less than 200m/sec in 63% of the total plots, 200-300m/sec in 34% and 300-500m /sec in 3%. 7. There was a proportional relationship between seismic prospecting soil depth and executive soil depth, and seismic propection soil depth was about 10 to 20cm deeper than the order.

This study was conducted to remove the urban heat island effects embedded in the interpolated surfaces of daily minimum temperature in the Korean Peninsula. Fifty six standard weather stations are usually used to generate the gridded temperature surface in South Korea. Since most of the weather stations are located in heavily populated and urbanized areas, the observed minimum temperature data are contaminated with the so-called urban heat island effect. Without an appropriate correction, temperature estimates over rural area or forests might deviate significantly from the actual values. We simulated the spatial pattern of population distribution within any single population reporting district (city or country) by allocating the reported population to the "urban" pixels of a land cover map with a 30 by 30 m spacing. By using this "digital population model" (DPM), we can simulate the horizontal diffusion of urban effect, which is not possible with the spatially discontinuous nature of the population statistics fer each city or county. The temperature estimation error from the existing interpolation scheme, which considers both the distance and the altitude effects, was regressed to the DPMs smoothed at 5 different scales, i.e., the radial extent of 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5.0 km. Optimum regression models were used in conjunction with the distance-altitude interpolation to predict monthly normals of daily minimum temperature in South Korea far 1971-2000 period. Cross validation showed around 50% reduction in terms of RMSE and MAE over all months compared with those by the conventional method.conventional method.

Low cycle fatigue characteristics of cast aluminum alloy A356 with a yield strength and ultimate strength of 229 and 283 MPa respectively was evaluated using smooth axial specimen under strain controlled condition. Reversals to failure ranged from 16 to 107. The cast aluminum alloy exhibited cyclically strain-gardening behavior. The results of low cycle fatigue tests indicated that the conventional low cycle fatigue tests indicated that the conventional low cycle fatigue life model was not a satisfactory representation of the data. This occurred because the elastic strain-life curve was not-log-log linear and this phenomena caused a nonconservative and unsafe fatigue life prediction at both extremes of long and short lives. A linear log-log total strain-life model and a bilinear log-log elastic strain-life model were proposed in order to improve the representation of data compared to the conventional low cycle fatigue life model. Both proposed fatigue life models were statistically analyzed using F tests and successfully satisfied. However, the low cycle fatigue life model generated by the bilinear log-log elastic strain-life equation yielded a discontinuous curve with nonconservatism in the region of discontinuity. Among the models examined, the linear log-log total strain-life model provided the best representation of the low cycle fatigue data. Low cycle fatigue life prediction method based on the local strain approach could conveniently incorporated both proposed fatigue life models.
To estimate the accumulated infiltration, Horton's and Green-Ampt's equations are usually applied. Because the real infiltration is penetrated into the soil continuously, to cover the problems of the conventional equations derived from the discontinuous infiltration system, new infiltration equation is derived from the concepts of continuous infiltration system. Furthermore, infiltration tests were done to compare the results from the conventional Horton's and Green-Ampt's equations and newly derived equation. Unsaturated permeability is the function of water content ratio or saturation degree, which affects directly to the infiltration capacity and accumulated infiltration. Therefore, the variation term of unsaturated permeability is inserted into the new equation to estimate the proper infiltration capacity and accumulated infiltration. It will make the more accurate analysis for the safety of structure and the behavior of groundwater.
Behavior of rock mass depend on the mechanical properties of intact rock and geometrical property of discontinuity distributed in rock mass. In case of rock slope, particularly, location of slope failure surface and behavior after failure are changed due to discontinuities. In this study, two 3D slope stability analysis methods were developed for two different failure types which are circular failure and planar failure, considering that failure type of rock slope is dependent on scale of discontinuity which was then applied to real rock slope to review the applicability. In case of circular failure, stable condition was maintained in natural dry condition, which however became unstable when the moisture content of the surface was increased by rainfall. In case of planar failure, rock slope become more unstable comparing to dry condition which is attributable to decrease in friction angle of discontinuity surface due to rainfall. Viewing analysis result above, analysis method proved to have well incorporated the phenomenon occurred on real slope from the analysis result, demonstrating its applicability to reviewing the slope stability as well as to maintaining the slope.
