  • The discharge performance of an impinging-type injector for cavitating flow has been evaluated. The predicted discharge coefficient for cavitating flow agree s well with the measured data showing less than 2% discrepancy. For the case of non- cavitating flow analysis, the disagreement between CFD resu lts and the experimental data is 8%. The discharge coefficient for the cavitating flow decreases with decrea se in the Reynolds number. On the other hand, it increases slightly as the Reynolds number increases for the non-cavitating flow because of the reduced viscous effect. The incipience of cavitation is predicted to occur around the cavitation number of 1.3 for fixed Reynolds number flow. In this environment, the discharge performance is proportional to the cavitation number for cavitating flow while it is independent to the cavitation number for non-cavitating flow regime.

  • Electrostatic precipitators(EPs) have low pressure drop and high dust collection efficiency and are widely used for industrial dust collectors. The current-voltage characteristics, which are important to maintain high dust collection efficiency, depend on several factor: discharge electrode shape, gas flow property, dust loading etc. In this study, experiments are performed to investigate the current-voltage characteristics of the corona discharge of various electrode geometries and an empirical model is proposed to predict current-voltage characteristics of the corona discharge. The corona onset voltage correction coefficient$(\alpha)$ and the geometry correction coefficient$(k_g)$ are used to the conventional equation for wire-plate type discharge electrode. The corona onset voltages are -6.3kV and almost constant when the numbers of discharge pins are varied from 3 to 9. The length of discharge pins has very sensitive effects on the corona onset voltage. They are increased from -6.3 to -7.8kV when the discharge pin length are 8.5 and 4.5mm, respectively. The empirical model shows good agreement with experimental results and can predict the effects of discharge pin length and number.

  • Optimization process of pre-swirl nozzle geometry was conducted to improve the discharge coefficient of pre-swirl system by using CFD. The optimization of pre-swirl nozzle shape covered the converging angle and the location of the converging nozzle. Optimization process included Optimal Latin Hyper-cube Design method to get the experimental points and the Kriging method to create the response surface which gives candidate points. The process was finished when the difference between the predicted value and CFD value of candidate point was less than 0.1 %. This paper compared the Reference model, Initial model which is the first model of optimization and Optimized model to study flow characteristics. Finally, the discharge coefficient of Optimized model is improved about 17 % to the Reference model.

  • An unsteady flow model is developed that allows variable roughness coefficient for each computational point according to its spatial position and the discharge. A step function or a power function can be used for functional relation between the discharge and the Manning's roughness coefficient. The model is applied to the reach of the South Han River between the Chungju Dam and Paldang Dam, and model parameters are estimated by optimization. Estimated parameters of both the step function model and the Power function model show that Manning's roughness coefficient decreases as the discharge increases. This tendency is more noticeable for the upstream reach of Yeoju compared to the downstream reach. It turns out that the stages calculated by the variable roughness coefficient model agree better with the observed ones than those by the conventional fixed parameter model.

  • Flow duration curves provide a compact summary of streamflow variability. In this study, characteristics of the dimensionless flow duration curve in natural rivers with the unregulated discharge were investigated. An analysis of flow duration characteristics was conducted with discharge data at stage-gauging stations of IHP representative basins and of the major rivers in Korea. Discharge characteristics are dependent on area of watershed. However, flow duration coefficients except drought duration coefficient are independent on that. Abundant flow duration coefficient was constant value. The coefficient of flow duration variability defined in this study as the ratio of the normal stream flow over the drought one is decreased with increasing of the watershed area, which implies that the watershed area affects the drought flow duration variability more than the low flow one. And the coefficient of flow duration variability is increased with the river gradient.

  • In this paper, the effect of the secondary electron emission coefficient of Xe ion on glow discharge was examined by ID numerical simulation. The simulation was performed for two distinct structures, short and long gaps. The features of the glow discharges in the both structures, firing and sustain voltages, luminance, and efficiency, were analyzed at various secondary electron emission coefficient of Xe ion.

  • Hydraulic variables such as discharge coefficient, gate opening, and upstream water depth are required to calculate the discharge of vertical lift gate. It is very important for a precise gate design, because it may affect the rest, to predict the behavior of gate opening during operation. In this study, an equation by which gate opening could be predicted with any upstream water depths was derived from the relation between the calculated value from buoyancy theory and measured one from experiment for a floating gate model. Downpull force was the reason for the differences between the calculated and the measured and it was verified using pressure coefficient. Also, the relation of discharge coefficient with gate opening ratios was derived. The derived relations were used for flood routing and it was realized that downpull force effect should be fully taken into account during gate design.

  • An experimental study was conducted on the spray characteristics of the pintle injector by opening distance. The discharge coefficient of the pintle injector was investigated and the spray angle was measured by taking the spray image by test conditions. As a result of the measurement of the discharge coefficient, it was confirmed that the change in the discharge coefficient of the outer injector was not significant over the experimental conditions, but the change in the discharge coefficient of the inner injector was decreased as the flow rate increased. Measurement of the spray angle showed that the change in the spray angle was not significant in the conditions under which the spray was fully developed, but the spray was not fully developed at low flow rates. This confirmed the possibility of thrust control using the pintle injector.

  • It has been studied the effect of mixture ratio and chamber pressure on variations of discharge coefficients. Combustion experiments of bi-liquid swirl coaxial injectors were conducted at fuel-rich conditions with liquid oxygen and kerosene. Using two types of injectors for the experiments, characteristics of the discharge coefficient have been identified from variations in a diameter of the fuel nozzle and a momentum ratio along with the change of a LOx spray angle. It is concluded that discharge coefficients do not vary because of no change of flame structures from the fact that the fuel swirl chamber is completely filled up with fuel flow.

  • The flow characteristics of the broad-crested side weir considering the levee's side slope of main channel ($ES_{ch}$) was investigated through hydraulic experiment in order to estimate the discharge coefficient equation. For applicability to actual river, levee's side slope of main channel 1:0.5, 1:1 and 1:2 were selected. Experimental results show that the new estimated equation for the discharge coefficient including $ES_{ch}$ is reasonable and effective in actual applications by comparing estimated and measured discharge over side weirs. Through a multiple linear regression analysis the importance of variabes were ordered as $ES_{ch}$ > $h/y_u$ > $L/y_u$ > $Fr_u$. Especially the discharge coefficient equation without $Fr_u$ was suggested, and the high applicability was reviewed by comparing the measured and calculated overflow of broad-chested side weir.
