  • The purpose of the study is to analyze the changes of the heart rate, hand function, and health related quality of life of the people with intellectual disability through the increase of the auditory stimulation. The subjects were 16 people with intellectual disability. The increase of the auditory stimulation was modulated through the music sound and the intensity was consisted of 60dB, 65dB and 70dB. The wist heart rate and blood pressure monitor was used to measure the heart rate during the application of the auditory stimulation increase. The hand function of right and left hand was measured by the Purdue pegboard. Health related of quality of life was measured by the short form-8 health survey. As the results, the increase of the heart rate was showed by the increase of the auditory stimulation and the decrease of the hand function and health related quality of life was showed. For these, the increase of the auditory stimulation acts as a psychological distress, thereby the increase of the heart rate and the reduction of the hand function and health relate quality of life showed. Thus, to decrease of the heart rate and increase the hand function and the health related quality of life of the people with intellectual disability, the intensity of the auditory stimulation should be considered in the environmental stimulation.

  • This study was attempted to give aids in making 'the Disability Discrimination Act' by estimating the potential Cost-Benefit in case that the discrimination on the disabled is removed. The potential benefits from this Disability Discrimination Act are calculated considering the income increase of the people with disabilities from additional employment for them and the decrease of employment levies and the public assistance benefits. The potential cost was made focusing on the following 2 expenses- the extra expenditures that the owners of companies had to invest from the employment of the disabled and the managing expenses for correcting discrimination organizations. As the result of this estimation, the potential net present value under the 7% discount rate is very high as 12,700,301 million won and the cost-benefit ratio is also great as 96.8. The consequence of the sensitive analysis in changing the discount rate also does not have great changes. As the result of these estimating results, it is known that when the discrimination is solved by the 'Disability Discrimination Act', the pure benefit of our society will become tremendous. After all, it could be said that the need for 'the Disability Discrimination Act' is emphasized and should be emphasized.

  • Objective : To estimate the burden of cardiovascular disease attributable to the total suspended particulates (TSP) and sulfur dioxide ($SO_2$) in Korea using the YLD (years lived with disability) measurement. Methods : Congestive heart failure(CHF) and myocardial infarction (MI) were chosen as the main cardiovascular diseases whose causes are attributable to the TSP and $SO_2$ levels. In order to calculate the YLD (years lived with a disability), the following parameters in the formula were estimated. : the incidence rate, the case fatality rate, The expected duration of a disability and the average age of onset were estimated. The expected duration of a disability and the average age of onset were calculated using the DISMOD method, as developed by the GBD researchers. The burden of cardiovascular disease due to TSP and $SO_2$ was estimated using the number of years that the patient lived with a disability. Results : The VLD of the CHF due to the TSP and $SO_2$ was attributed to the TSP (94.4 person-year) and $SO_2$ levels (35.0 person-year). The YLD of the ME due to the TSP and $SO_2$ was attributed to the TSP (148.4 person-year) and $SO_2$ levels(27.6 person-year). Conclusion : The YLD method employed in this study was appropriate for quantifying the burden of cardiovascular disease. Therefore, it would provide a rational basis for planning a national health policy regarding the disease burden of the risk factors in Korea.

  • Proper prosody in reading allows the reader to naturally convey the meaning, which manifests as changes in pitch, loudness, and speech rate. Children with reading disability face difficulty in delivering information due to poor prosody. This study identified the difference in prosodic features between children with reading disabilities and nondisabled children through means of reading tasks. Reading tasks, according to sentence types (short sentences, assumptions/conditions, intentions, relative-clause), were recorded by 15 children studying in the 3rd to 6th grade in elementary school. Children with reading disability had a statistically significant wider range of pitch, slower speech rate, more frequent usage of pauses, longer total pause duration, and steeper pitch slope than nondisabled one in sentence-final and -medial words. Children with reading disability, therefore, exhibited a less natural and expressive reading than nondisabled children. Through this study, the characteristics of prosody observed in children with reading disability were identified and the need for an approach for effective intervention was also suggested.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to determine the initial effects of deltoid inhibition taping to Pain, Function, Strength, ROM in shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). Methods : This study is 28 patients(male 16, female 12) with shoulder impingement syndrome(SIS).The experimental group received deltoid inhibition taping and the control group had sham taping. Outcome variables measured degree of pain, disability, strength, and range of motion at pre-post intervention. The changes between pre-post interventions are analyzed by a repeated measure ANOVA test. Results : Pain and disability index significantly decreased (p<.05), and the rate of change in pain and disability level of the experimental group increased significantly more than control group (p<.05). Strength and range of motion significantly increased (p<.05), but the rate of change of the two groups showed no significant difference (p>.05). Conclusion : These results suggest that deltoid inhibition taping was initial effective in decreasing pain and disability in SIS patients.

  • Objective : Psychological factors may have a major influence on the outcome of treatment for back pain. We investigated the relationship between the outcome and some psychological factors, such as self-reported pain intensity, disability, sleep disturbance and fatigue. Method : The study was conducted as a survey using a questionnaire and telephone interviews. The survey included consecutive 294 patients who visited the neurosurgical out-patient department complaining of low back pain and contacted by telephone on average seven months after the first visit. Pain intensity was measured by visual analog scale, and disability was assessed by Waddell's chronic disability index. Results : The outcome of treatment for back pain was recovered in 36.7%, improved in 30.6%, almost same in 28.6%, and aggravated in 4.1%. Overall rate of improvement was 67.3%. The rate of improvement was related to the duration, patterns and intensity of the symptom, and Waddell index. It was not influenced by the doctors, special studies, and methods of treatment. When the duration was more than 6 months, there were the symptoms of both back and legs, and the self-reported Waddell index was 1-3, the rate of improvement was relatively low. Although the intensity of the pain and disability was closely related to the degree of sleep disturbance, fatigue, appetite, or indigestion, the outcome of treatment for back pain was not always bad in patients with high psychological stress. Actually the outcome of the patients who complained severe pain and disability was better than the outcome of the others. Conclusion : The outcome of the back pain can be predicted by the duration, patterns and intensity of the symptom, and Waddell index. The multidisciplinary treatment will be necessary for the patients whose expected outcome is not good to reduce not only the physical symptoms but also the psychological stress.

A total of 7,684 articles on disability were collected from homepages of the three newspapers , , and . Through network text analysis and content analysis, we considered about "The perspective of Disability" based on "Multiple Disability Model". As a result of this research, when comparing individual models versus social models, individual models have a higher rate 64.31% than social models 35.69%. According to the newspapers, the major perception of Disability is a traditional individual model, which means disability must be solved by individuals. In addition, due to low social and institutional supports, the public's attention and consideration required for the disabled, socially weak people. This research implied that despite the changing times of looking at disability, three newspapers are still staying in the traditional paradigm. Therefore, It is required that viewing a disability from the perspective on disabled people, and a mature awareness that recognizes the diversity of individual needs. The significance of this study can be found in the fact that no attempt has been made to treat the disability perspectivec in newspaper articles as quantitative and qualitative data.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide design guidelines necessary for creating disability-friendly campuses. To this end, a literature survey and a survey on the current educational welfare facilities for disabled college students were conducted. The fact-finding survey was conducted in writing and visiting evaluations on 19 campuses located in Gangwon-do(province). The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) The college enrollment rate of the disabled has doubled since 2000, but it was found to be half of the enrollment rate based on school enrollment, and the number of students who gave up in the middle is increasing. This is due to an obstacle in the learning environment, so it is necessary to improve welfare facilities. 2) As a result of evaluating the status of educational welfare support for students with disabilities, it was found that the overall evaluation result was improved, but the absolute evaluation result was less than 70%, and it was not improved. 3) As a result of evaluating the actual conditions of the intermediate facilities, indoor facilities, sanitary facilities, guidance and other facilities, and unit spaces, it is necessary to expand and improve them due to the lack of disabled parking marks, continuity of access roads, pedestrian safety passages, lifts, and rest areas for the disabled.
