  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the guidelines for organizing and maintaining their subject directory search engines which serve effective search results of web documents. The methods of this study are to review and analyze some directory search engines for finding problems of them and review literatures concerned with classification theory and previous studies. As results, this study suggests the guidelines for preparing the systematic subject directory scheme that is adapted to the internet directory search engines related to general andlor special subject fields through using the above guidelines.

  • In web search engines, there are two main methods: directory searching and keyword searching. Keyword searching shows high recall rate but tends to come up with too many search results to find which users want to see the pages. Directory searching has also a difficulty to find the pages that users want in case of selecting improper category without knowing the exact category, that is, it shows high precision rates but low recall rates. We designed and implemented a new web search engine to resolve the problems of directory search method. It regards a category as a fuzzy set which contains keywords and calculate the degree of inclusion between categories. The merit of this method is to enhance the recall rate of directory searching by expanding subcategories on the basis of similarity.

  • As the Internet becomes widespread as a significant tool of obtaining information, there is a growing demand for a system to efficiently organize and manage information on the Internet. Accordingly, research on the directory classification structure that directly affects the efficiency of a users information search is actively investigated in every field. The study intends to suggest an efficient classification structure by comparing and analyzing the directory classification structure of current design portal sites with the theory of literature classification structure, in order to increase the efficiency of search according to the directory classification structure of design sector.

  • This study aims to investigate information seeking behavior of Popshoes users. Transaction logs of Popshoes, a major Korean shopping search engine, were analyzed. These transaction logs were collected over 3 months period, from January 1 to March 31, 2015. The results of this study show that Popshoes users behave in a simple and passive way. In the total sessions, more users chose to browse a directory than typing and submitting a query. However, queries played a more crucial role in important decision makings such as search results clicks and product purchases than directory browsing. The results of this study can be implemented to the effective development of shopping search engines.

  • The study measured whether two search engines retrieve different Web documents for 6 queries. Two different search engines, Alta Vista in terms of keyword search engines and Yahoo in terms of subject directory engines were measured using as criteria, total number of documents retrieved, total number of relevant documents retrieved, recall and precision ratios. In addition, Alta Vista was suitable for specific and technical terms, while Yahoo was effective for general and plain terms. However, more elaborate research needs to be tested in terms of query characteristics.

  • Directory searching and index searching methods are two main methods in web search engines. Both of the methods are applied to most of the well-known Internet search engines, which enable users to choose the other method if they are not satisfied with results shown by one method. That is, Index searching tends to come up with too many search results, while directory searching has a difficulty in selecting proper categories, frequently mislead to false ones. In this paper, we propose a novel method in which a category hierarchy is dynamically constructed. To do this, a category is regarded as a fuzzy set which includes keywords. Similarly extensible subcategories of a category can be found using fuzzy relational products. The merit of this method is to enhance the recall rate of directory search by expanding subcategories on the basis of similarity.

  • Most web portals provide a web directory service which selects and classifies web sites according to their subject matter. In order to investigate the directory access behavior of general Korean web users, this study analyzes directory access logs of NAVER, a major Korean web search engine. This study suggests a methodology to classify the total sessions into six different session types. This study also discusses directory access behaviors of the NAVER users by examining the distribution of sessions according to session types, the lengths of navigation within a session, and the most frequently visited categories. It is expected that this study could contribute to the development of more effective web directory services.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop the classification scheme in subject-based directory search engine for educational research information on the web. Five classification systems. Yahoo Korea, Argus Clearinghouse, DDC, ERIC thesaurus and KEDI thesaurus were measured in terms of coverage of subject fields, system logic, accuracy of terminology and efficiency of searching. For the design of Classification Scheme, this study considered the content of subject areas, features of information resources and efficiency based on users. Finally, the Classification Scheme was established in terms of 16 main divisions and 47 sub-divisions in educational research information.

  • Although the research information resources on Internet are spread out on thousands of computers, it is not always easy to get them on the right time by the right manner. The purpose of this study is to use DDC(Dewey Decimal Classification) scheme in subject-based directory search engine for research information resourcees to aid retrieval on the Internet. For the design of classification code, this study followed 'systematic order' of DDC to arrange subjects from the general o the specific in a logical order, and for the design of classification dictionary, 'Relative Index' of DDC was used to bring together the various aspects of subjects.

  • This study is to suggest a classification system to classify the agricultural information resources on the internet. In the first part, I analyzes KDC's class 520(agriculture science). The second part compares the agricultural classes of Yahoo! Korea with those of Empas search engine. The third part compares the classes of AFFIS with Agri_Directory. Based on the comparative analysis, it proposes a classificatory system for the agricultural information resources on the internet.
