  • To solve the urban traffic congestion problem, Seoul and other major cities have operated the reversible lanes as Transportation Systems Manage-ment(TSM) method since 1981. However, few studies have been conducted to measure the effectiveness of reversible lane implementation and operation, and the reversible lanes have been implemented based on the experiential warrants rather than the study-based warrants. In this Paper the effect of reversible lanes operation has been analyzed by using the average delay and the fuel consumption. Four factors such as in and out flow of directional v/c, the ratio of directional volume, the number of reversible lanes and left-turn treatment(prohibition of LTs or protected LTs) were used to estimate the implementation effect of reversible lane operation by using TRANSYT-7F simulation package. In the case of six-lane urban arterial, the lower ratio of directional volume was found to warrant the reversible lanes when the simulation-based method was applied compared with the current experiential warrants.

  • Based on the Boussinesq wave model, the wave distribution in the Chagui-Do sea area in Jeju was simulated by applying the directional irregular waves at an incident boundary. The time and spatial variations of monthly mean wave height and period were investigated, which aims to provide basic information on optimal sites for wave power generation. The grid size and time interval of the Boussinesq wave model were validated by examining wave distributions around a surface piercing wall, fixed at sea bottom with a constant slope. Except for the summer season, the significant wave height is dominated by wind waves and appears to be relatively high at the north sea of Chagui-Do, which is open to the ocean, while it is remarkably reduced at the rear sea of Chagui-Do because of its blocking effect on incident waves. In the summer, the significant wave height is higher at the south sea, and it is dominated by the swell waves, which is contributed by the strong south-west wind. The magnitude of significant wave height is the largest in the winter and the lowest in the spring. Annual average of the significant wave height is distinctively high at the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast, due to a steep variation of water depth and corresponding wave focusing effect. The seasonal and spatial distribution of the wave period around Chagui-Do sea reveals very similar characteristics to the significant wave height. It is suggested that the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast is the mast promising site for wave power generation.

  • In this paper, we present a novel local descriptor, Local Prominent Directional Pattern (LPDP), to represent the description of facial images for gender recognition purpose. To achieve a clearly discriminative representation of local shape, presented method encodes a target pixel with the prominent directional variations in local structure from an analysis of statistics encompassed in the histogram of such directional variations. Use of the statistical information comes from the observation that a local neighboring region, having an edge going through it, demonstrate similar gradient directions, and hence, the prominent accumulations, accumulated from such gradient directions provide a solid base to represent the shape of that local structure. Unlike the sole use of gradient direction of a target pixel in existing methods, our coding scheme selects prominent edge directions accumulated from more samples (e.g., surrounding neighboring pixels), which, in turn, minimizes the effect of noise by suppressing the noisy accumulations of single or fewer samples. In this way, the presented encoding strategy provides the more discriminative shape of local structures while ensuring robustness to subtle changes such as local noise. We conduct extensive experiments on gender recognition datasets containing a wide range of challenges such as illumination, expression, age, and pose variations as well as sketch images, and observe the better performance of LPDP descriptor against existing local descriptors.

  • The variation of the directional properties of an image is used to extract the iris code for human identification. In order to conserve the original information while minimizing the effect of noise, scale-space filtering is applied. Resulting binary codes have been tested on a set of 272 iris images obtained from 18 persons.

  • Oil whirl effects on system identification during modal testings are discussed. When the forward rotating excitations act, the oil whirl effects seriously appear. But when the backward rotating and uni-directional excitations act, and the magnitude of forward excitation is small, oil whirl effect do not appear in forced response function. The results of simulation of oil whirl effects during modal testing are well coincident with those of experiments. With the uni-directional excitation technique the linearized dynamic coefficients of fluid film bearings and seals can be estimated more accurately than with the circular rotating excitation technique. But with the circular excitation technique oil whirl effects can be well investigated.

  • A multi-font, multi-size and high speed character recognition system is designed. The design principles are simpilcity of algorithm, adaptibility, learnability, hierachical data processing and attention by feed back. For the multi-size character recognition, the extracted character images are normalized. A hierachical classifier classifies the feature vectors. Feature is extracted by applying the directional receptive field after the directional dege filter processing. The hierachical classifier is consist of two pre-classifiers and one decision making classifier. The effect of two pre-classifiers is prediction to the final decision making classifier. With the pre-classifiers, the time to compute the distance of the final classifier is reduced. Recognition rate is 95% for the three documents printed in three kinds of fonts, total 1,700 characters. For high speed implemention, a multiprocessor system with the ring structure of four transputers is implemented, and the recognition speed of 30 characters per second is aquired.

  • In this study, two full-scale gravity load-designed reinforced concrete corner beam-column joints were tested by being subjected to uniand bi-directional cyclic lateral loading. The test variable was loading type: uni- or bi-directional loading. To investigate the effect of the loading type on the cyclic behavior of joint specimens, damage progression, force-deformation relation, contribution of joint deformation to total drift, joint stress-strain response, and cumulative energy dissipation were investigated. The test data suggest that bidirectional loading can amplify damage accumulation in the joint region.

  • KrF excimer laser, which is useful for fabrication of fiber gratings, was irradiated on the PLC-type WDM directional coupler and the transmission wavelength shift was observed as a function of UV exposure time. The effective refractive index change of rectangular silica waveguide was calculated from the wavelength shift measurement and the coupled mode theory. heory.
