  • The performance of direct torque controlled (DTC) interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines is poor at low speeds due to a few reasons, namely limited accuracy of stator voltage acquisition and the presence of offset and drift components in the acquired signals. Due to factors such as forward voltage drop across switching devices in the three phase inverter and dead-time of the devices, the voltage across the machine terminals differ from the reference voltage vector used to estimate stator flux and electromagnetic torque. This can lead to instability of the IPM drive during low speed operation. Compensation schemes for forward voltage drops and dead-time are proposed and implemented in real-time control, resulting in improved performance of the space vector modulated DTC IPM drive, especially at low speeds. No additional hardware is required for these compensators.

  • To satisfy the high voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connection demand for wind power generation system, a novel topology and control strategy of HVDC grid connection for open-winding permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) based wind power generation system is proposed, in which two generator-side converter and two isolated DC/DC converters are used to transmit the wind energy captured by open winding PMSG to HVDC grid. By deducing the mathematic model of open winding PMSG, the vector control technique, position sensorless operation, and space vector modulation strategy is applied to implement the stable generation operation of PMSG. Finally, the simulation model based on MATLAB is built to validate the availability of the proposed control strategy.

  • In this paper we present a new vector control scheme for induction motor. An exact knowledge of the rotor flux position is essential for a high-performance vector control. The position of the rotor flux is measured in the direct scheme or estimated in the indirect schemes. Since the estimation of the flux position requires a priori knowledge of the induction motor parameters, the indirect schemes are machine parameter dependent. The rotor resistance and stator resistance among the parameters change with temperature. Variations in the parameters of induction machine cause deterioration of both the steady state and dynamic operation of the induction motor drive. Several methods have been presented to minimize the consequences of parameter sensitivity in indirect scheme. In this paper new estimation scheme of rotor flux position is presented to eliminate sensitivity due to resistance change with temperature. Simulation results are used to verify the performance of the proposed vector control scheme.

  • This paper deals with direct torque control of an induction motor (IM) with constant switching frequency. The desired torque is obtained from the speed controller which is designed using the IP controller. Decoupling control of torque and flux is developed based on the energy model of IM using the IP controller strategies. The desired d-axis and q-axis stator voltage components are obtained from the designed controller, which decouples torque and flux. The constant switching frequency can be applied using space-vector pulse width modulation, since the desired stator voltage can be known from the decoupling torque and flux controllers. In order to achieve stable operation of the proposed IP controllers, the gains of the controllers are chosen by setting the poles in negative (left) half of s-plane and by choosing the rising time for the response of the step function. The proposed controller was verified in simulations using Matlab/Simulink and results have proven excellent performance. It was found that the proposed IP controllers can provide excellent performance to track the desired torque and speed and to reject the disturbance of load.

  • High-performance Current Source Inverter (CSI)-fed, variable speed alternating current drives are prepared for various industrial applications. CSI-fed Induction Motor (IM) drives are managed by using different control methods. Noteworthy methods include scalar Control (V/f), Input-Output Linearization (IOL) control, Field-Oriented Control (FOC), and Direct Torque Control (DTC). The objective of this work is to compare the dynamic performance of the aforementioned drive control methods for CSI-fed IM drives. The dynamic performance results of the proposed drives are individually analyzed through sensitivity tests. The tests selected for the comparison are step changes in the reference speed and torque of the motor drive. The operation and performance of different vector control methods are verified through simulations with MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results.

  • A forced commutated cycloconverter (FCC) is a direct ac-ac converter capable of providing simultaneous voltage and frequency transformations. In this paper, vector control of an induction motor controlling stator current with forced commutated cycloconverter is presented. The advantage of current control is that the stator dynamics are eliminated and high performance vector control can be achieved. A novel modulation method based on dq transformation techniques is presented. Proposed modulation strategy generates the low frequency modulation function by the instantaneous value of the desired output voltages not by the steady state values of output magnitude and output frequency. PI control and predictive control algorithm for current control are applied, and the validity of proposed method is confirmed through digital simulations. Simulation results of step response and torque distubance and current control are presented.

  • In this paper, analysis of cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter in DTC-SVM (Direct Torque Control-Space Vector Modulation) based induction motor drive for FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) is presented. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter uses multiple series units of H-bridge power cells to achieve medium-voltage operation and low harmonic distortion. In FCEV, a fuel cell stack is used as the major source of electric power moreover the battery and/or ultra-capacitor is used to assist the fuel cell. These sources are suitable for utilizing in cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. The drive control strategy is based on DTC-SVM technique. In this scheme, first, stator voltage vector is calculated and then realized by SVM method. Contribution of multilevel inverter to the DTC-SVM scheme is led to achieve high performance motor drive. Simulations are carried out in Matlab-Simulink. Five-level and nine-level inverters are applied in 3hp FCEV induction motor drive for analysis the multilevel inverter. Each H-bridge is implemented using one fuel cell and battery. Good dynamic control and low ripple in the torque and the flux as well as distortion decrease in voltage and current profiles, demonstrate the great performance of multilevel inverter in DTC-SVM induction motor drive for vehicle application.

  • This paper mainly proposes a direct torque control strategy to minimize torque ripple in brushless DC (BLDC) motor. BLDC motor has large current and torque ripple when one voltage vector applied in one cycle due to its low inductance. Hence, this paper proposed a hysteresis torque control with PWM mode to control the resultant torque. Moreover, when the direct torque control system is operating during the two-phase half-bridge $120^{\circ}$ conduction mode, large torque ripple in commutation area appears every 120 electrical degree. Based on analyzing the root of torque ripple in detail, lookup tables of switching devices states for new half-bridge modulation mode in the positive and negative reference torque put forwarded. Finally, simulations by MATLAB software and experiment results from DSP are presented to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy operating in four-quadrant operation.

  • A new control method of spindle induction motor drive is proposed in this paper. In a conventional control method, the vector control was employed in the low speed range, while the constant V/f(volt-per-hertz) PWM control was employed in the high speed range. The two control modes were automatically selected at an intermediate speed. In a proposed control method, the direct vector-control with an encoder is employed in the low speed range(from 0 to 8,000rpm), and the vector control without an encoder is employed in th high speed(from 8,000 to 15,000rpm) by using flux observer and speed estimator. This paper describes problem of control method in a conventional spindle induction motor drive and proposes contort method as variation of motor speed.
