  • Measurement of cardiac output by thermodilution method is easy to perform and can be repeated at very short intervals and offers a number of theoretical and practical advantages. The purpose of this paper is to reevaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of the thermodilution cardiac output by comparing the results with those obtained by the direct Fick technique. From January through April 1981 [4 months], 26 simultaneous cardiac output measurements were made using thermodilution and direct Fick methods in 12 patients in the intensive care unit of Severance Hospital following open heart surgery. The average age of the patients was $34.8{\pm}12.0$ [SD] years [range; 17-57 years]. For cardiac output determination by thermodilution technique [$CO_TD$], a Swan-Ganz Thermodilution Catheter, Model 93A-131-7F [Edwards Laboratories], a Cardiac Output Computer, Model 9520A, and Strip Chart Recorder, Model 9810 [Edwards Laboratories] were used. For the determination of cardiac output by direct Fick principle [$CO_Fick$], a Van Slyke Manometric Apparatus [Thomas] for the measurements of arteriovenous oxygen content difference and a Collin`s Respirometer with Kymograph for the measurement of oxygen consumption were used. The correlation between the simultaneously measured $CO_TD$ and $CO_Fick$ was found to be $CO_Fick$ = 0.95.$CO_TD$ + 0.1073, [r= 0.9777, P < 0.001 ]. For 26 double or triple determinations of $CO_TD$, the values ranged from 1.77 L/min to 6.66 L/min, with a reproducibility of 2.18%. The maximum difference of $CO_TD$ for $CO_Fick$ was between +11.99% and -12,99% [$Mean{\pm}SD$ = $6.07{\pm}3.97$%]. Measurement of cardiac output by thermodilution method provides a simple, rapid, reproducible and highly accurate method for multiple cardiac output measurements suitable for use at the bedside. • This study analyzes differences between the results of 3D direct measurements and automated measurements for Korean elderly females according to age groups, side somatotype, and BMI groups. This study compares the measurement differences of the direct and the 3D automated measurements for women between the ages of 70 to 85, according to age group, BMI group, and side somatotype. A comparison of the results of the direct measurement and the 3D automated measurements for elderly women show that a meaningful discrepancy exists for 29 items out of 33 items. Furthermore, the results of comparing the average error tolerance recommended by ISO20685 shows that 30 items out of 33 items exceeded ISO recommendations. The results of the automated measurement program shows a higher degree of accuracy for straight postures; however, this unsuitable for postures of elderly women with a changed somatotype. The analysis results of the measurement difference indicate the suitability of the automatic measurement programs is found to be high for stood postures, while problems seem to exist on several items along with an automated program is not appropriately used due to posture and part of body changes for elderly women. Therefore, it is recommended to develop an algorithm, that reflects the body changes of elderly women first and then upgrade the automated program equipped with a measurement size method. It is hoped that the study results can be utilized as base data for improving the automated measurement program.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the direct and indirect nursing care hours with establishment of nurse substations and compare the experimental nursing units with the existing nursing units For this study, two experimental nursing units: (1) a medical nursing unit and (2) a surgical nursing unit with a nurse substation were selected. And two control nursing units : (1) a medical nursing unit and (2) a surgical nursing unit without a nurse substation were selected. After a three-month experimental operation from June 1 to August 31,1996, research data were collected for three days from September 2 to 4, 1996. We investigated the effects of the direct & indirect nursing care hours with establishment of the nurse substations (improved nursing environment) without adding the staff nurses. The effect of establishment of the nurse sub-station was measured for the differences direct & indirect nursing care hours between experimental and control nursing units. An investigator measured the time for a staff nurse to practice each nursing activity and recorded it every minute. Percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. The results are as follows: 1. There was no significant difference between the experimental and control nursing units in staffs' working hours during their shift. 2. There were significant diffferences between the experimental and control nursing units in dierct nursing care hours (t=0.0288, p=0.0001) and indirect nursing care hours (t=0.3886, p=0.0103) per patient. 3. There was significant difference between the experimental and control nursing units in direct nursing care hours done by nurses(t=0.0012, p=0.0111) and aids(t=0.3011, p=0.0027). • Aerodynamic sensitivity analysis codes are developed via the hand-differentiation using a direct differentiation method and an adjoint method respectively from discrete two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Unlike previous other researches, Baldwin-Lomax algebraic turbulence model is also differentiated by hand to obtain design sensitivities with respect to design variables of interest in turbulent flows. Discrete direct sensitivity equations and adjoint equations are efficiently solved by the same time integration scheme adopted in the flow solver routine. The required memory for the adjoint sensitivity code is greatly reduced at the cost of the computational time by allowing the large banded flux jacobian matrix unassembled. Direct sensitivity code results are found to be exactly coincident with sensitivity derivatives obtained by the finite difference. Adjoint code results of a turbulent flow case show slight deviations from the exact results due to the limitation of the algebraic turbulence model in implementing the adjoint formulation. However, current adjoint sensitivity code yields much more accurate sensitivity derivatives than the adjoint code with the turbulence eddy viscosity being kept constant, which is a usual assumption for the prior researches.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze hydraulic characteristics of surface irrigation in a paddy field of direct seeding culture. Field experiment was performed in the paddy field of ridge direct dry seeding. Simulation by a numerical model was also accomplished with the data obtained from the field experiment. The model was developed by one dimensional zero-inertia equation and finite difference method. From the result of the field observation, the furrows of the experimental field were found to have various geometric characteristics. Advance distance and time were measured both in the field and by the model simulation for various furrow lengths and irrigation discharges. Roughness coefficients of each furrow were also estimated by the model.

  • The Nongkwang variety was sown directly in the field by the three methods of dibbling, drill seeding and broad-casting in non-, low- and high-salty areas, and compared with the growth of transplanted rice in each areas. The yield of rough rice was increased remarkably by direct sowing when compared with that produced by transplanting inboth salty areas, but in non-salty area, the former was decreased significantly. There was no significant difference in the yields of rough rice resulting from three seedling methods of direct sowing in each area. The direct sowing method was predominated in number of panicle, weight of panicle, ratio of matured grains, milling recovery percentage, and straw weight in both salty areas, and dicreased in panicle weight and ratio of matured grain in nonsalty area.

  • The purpose of this article was to review the changes in translucency of direct esthetic restorative materials after curing, aging and treatment. As a criterion for the evaluation of clinical translucency changes, visual perceptibility threshold in translucency parameter difference (${\Delta}TP$) of 2 was used. Translucency changes after curing were perceivable depending on experimental methods and products (largest ${\Delta}TP$ in resin composites = 15.9). Translucency changes after aging were reported as either relatively stable or showed perceivable changes by aging protocols (largest ${\Delta}TP$ in resin composites = -3.8). Translucency changes after curing, aging and treatment were perceivable in several products and experimental methods. Therefore, shade matching of direct esthetic materials should be performed considering these instabilities of translucency in direct esthetic materials.

  • Singapore's inward and outward investments with industrialized countries in both manufacturing and service sectors were skill seeking while outward investments to developing countries were labor seeking. Applying the Knowledge-Capital model, it was found that services Foreign Direct Investment is sensitive to skill differences. A ten-percent decline in skill differences with industrialized countries resulted in a 4.25 percent rise in inbound manufacturing and 1.48 percent rise in inbound services investments. Meanwhile, a ten-percent increase in skill differences with developing countries resulted in a 30 percent rise in outbound manufacturing and 0.38 percent rise in services investments. Furthermore, when services are distinguished by skill-intensity, the impact of relative skill endowments on inbound Foreign Direct Investment in skill-intensive services is significantly different from the impact on other services. However, when services are disaggregated by "proximity" needs, we do not find any significant difference in the impact of relative skill endowments on Foreign Direct Investment.
