Among 46 Acinetobacter baumannii isolates collected in 2004, two imipenem-resistant isolates were obtained from clinical specimens taken from patients hospitalized in Busan, Republic of Korea. Two carbapenemase-producing isolates were further investigated to determine the mechanism of resistance. These isolates were analyzed by antibiotic susceptibility testing, microbiological tests of carbapenemase activity, determination of pI, transconjugation test, enterobacterial repetitive consensus (ERIC)-PCR, and DNA sequencing. Two cases of infection by A. baumannii producing the IMP-1 ${\beta}$-lactamase were detected. The isolates were characterized by a modified cloverleaf synergy test and EDTA-disk synergy test. Isoelectric focusing of crude bacterial extracts revealed nitrocefin-positive bands with a pI value of 9.0. PCR amplification and characterization of the amplicons by direct sequencing indicated that the isolates carried a $bla_{IMP-l}$ determinant. The isolates were characterized by a multidrug resistance phenotype, including penicillins, extended-spectrum cephalosporins, carbapenems, and aminoglycosides. These results indicate that the observed imipenem resistance of two Korean A. baumannii isolates was due to the spread of an IMP-1-producing clone. Our microbiological test of carbapenemase activity is simple to screen class B metallo-${\beta}$-lactamase-producing clinical isolates to determine their clinical impact and to prevent further spread. This study shows that the $bla_{IMP-l}$ resistance determinant, which is emerging in Korea, may become an emerging therapeutic problem, since clinicians are advised not to use extended-spectrum cephalosporins, imipenem, and aminoglycosides. This observation emphasizes the importance of having effective control measures in Asian hospitals, such as early detection of colonized patients, isolation procedures, and a judicious use of antibiotics.

Accuracy of daily solar radiation estimated from a Mountain Microclimate Simulation Model (MT-CLIM) was assessed for seven observation sites with complex topography in Uiseong County. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) between the observed and the estimated daily solar radiation was 0.52 for 7 sites for the study period from 1 August to 30 September 2009. Overall, the MT-CLIM overestimated the solar radiation with root mean square error (RMSE) of $3.83MJ\;m^{-2}$ which is about 25% of the mean daily solar radiation ($15.27MJ\;m^{-2}$) for the study period. Considering that the pyranometer's tolerance is ${\pm}5%$ of standard sensor, the RMSE of MT-CLIM was too large to accept for a direct application for agricultural sector. The reliability of solar radiation estimated by MT-CLIM must be improved by considering additional ways such as using a topography correction coefficient.
This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant activity of Korean ginseng using an ORAC(Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) assay. Four fractions each (80% ethanol, ethyl acetate, water saturated 1-butanol, and water) were obtained from different ginseng samples (White Ginseng: ; 6 yrs-., 5 yrs-., ; Cork Ginseng: ; 5 yrs-., 4 yrs-.). The saponin content of each fraction was quantified by LC/MS, and the antioxidant capacity of the ginseng was measured by the ORAC assay. The ORAC method, which was recently validated using automatic liquid handling systems, has been adapted for manual handling with the use of a conventional fluorescence microplate reader. Furthermore, the ORAC assay provides a direct measure of hydrophilic chain-breaking antioxidant capacity against peroxy radical, which is the exiting and emission of 2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine)-dihychloride (AAPH). As a result of our experiments, ginsenosides Rg1 and Rb1 were the two major saponins found in the ginseng samples, and Rc, Rb2, Re, Rd, Rg3, and Rh1 were detected in a small quantities. For the antioxidant capacities of the fractions (80% ethanol, ethyl acetate, butanol, and water), we found that the organic solvent fraction had similar antioxidant capacities, and were higher than the capacity of the water fraction. When determining the similarities in each fraction, only the ethyl acetate fraction showed similarity compared to other fractions (p>0.05). The antioxidant capacity of ginseng may come from phenolic compounds and some nonpolar saponins. However, based on the results of this study, we hypothesize that some acidic polysaccharides and other biological components may contribute to its antioxidant capacity. Additional research is required to determine other possible biological response modifiers that contribute to the antioxidant capacity of ginseng.

Nitrous acid (HONO) can be produced by heterogenous reactions of nitrogen dioxide on surface materials and direct emission from combustion sources. However, a little is known of indoor HONO levels or the relationship between residential HONO, NO, and $NO_2$ concentrations in occupied houses. Therefore, we measured simultaneously NO, $NO_2$, and HONO concentrations in living room of an apartment using continuous analyzers to study the production of HONO (June $22{\sim}30$, 2006). The 4-min average concentrations of indoor NO, $NO_2$, and HONO were 4.3 (range: $0.4{\sim}214.3$), 10.3 ($2.0{\sim}87.3$), and 1.8 ppb ($0.3{\sim}7.7$), respectively. Peak levels of HONO up to 7.7 ppb and 24-hr averages as high as 1.7 ppb were measured. In agreement with previous studies, indoor HONO concentrations increased during operation of an unvented gas range. Examination of the observed kinetics suggests that the secondary production of indoor HONO, possibly as a result of heterogeneous reactions involving $NO_2$ and $H_2O$ is associated with $[NO_2]^2[H_2O]\;(r^2=0.88)$ rather than with $[NO][NO_2][H_2O]\;(r^2=0.75)$. Three combustion experiments at nighttime were also carried out to investigate the effects of vented combustion on the HONO, NO, and $NO_2$ concentrations. It was found to release HONO for $10{\sim}15$ minutes after NO and $NO_2$ source was turned off, and peak values were finally attained. Compared to unvented combustion, peak $NO_2$ and HONO concentrations were 3.2 and 2.0 times lower at weak vented combustion (air flow: $340\;m^3/hr$) and 4.9 and 2.4 times lower at strong vented combustion (air flow: $540\;m^3/hr$), respectively, emphasizing importance of operating ventilation hood fan during combustion to improve indoor air quality.

Limit state design has been implemented in Korea since 2015; however, there exists no specification of lateral load determination on retaining wall due to the Korean standard traffic load on retaining wall's backfill surface. The lateral load from traffic depends on lane number, standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loadings is typically used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the Korean standard truck, based on the findings from analytical solutions using Bounessq's theory and numerical assessment using 2D finite element method. Consequently, it was found that the equivalent heights of soil from the Korean standard truck load were lower for lower retaining wall height.
Objective: The research was conducted to determine the digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) contents as well as the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients in corn, waxy corn and steam-flaked corn fed to growing pigs. Methods: Eighteen growing pigs with initial body weight of $15.42{\pm}1.41kg$ were randomly allotted to three diets including a corn diet, a waxy corn diet and a steam-flaked corn diet in a completely randomized design. Each treatment contained six replicates. The experiment lasted for 12 days, which comprised 7-d adaptation to diets followed by a 5-d total collection of feces and urine. The energy contents and the nutrient digestibility in three ingredients were calculated using direct method. Results: Compared to normal corn, both the amylose and dietary fiber contents in waxy corn were numerically lower, but the starch gelatinization degree was numerically greater. Moreover, the DE and ME contents as well as the ATTD of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber (ADF) in waxy corn were significantly greater (p<0.05) than those in normal corn when fed to growing pigs. Furthermore, the steam-flaked corn had greater (p<0.05) DE and ME contents, and ATTD of ether extract and ADF compared to normal corn. Conclusion: Both variety and processing procedure have influence on chemical compositions, energy contents and nutrient digestibility of corn. The waxy corn and steam-flaked corn had greater degree of starch gelatinization and DE and ME contents compared to normal corn when fed to growing pigs.

The purpose of this study is to examine the motivational factors of university graduates participating in 'Youth Technology Transfer Specialist Training Project(Youth TLO)' by applying Vroom's expectancy theory. Moreover, it is verified that the effect of actual participation behavior and individual performance improvement for the university graduates in Gyeonggi-do, Busan regions. The motivation factors were consisted of valence, instrumentality, and expectancy. An empirical analysis was conducted of the effects on the verification of the demographic characteristics of the target, the behaviour of personal business participation in the Valence and Force model, and the improvement of performance. Three results were inferred from 322 collected data as follows; First, comparative analysis about expectancy, which related to work experience, according to demographic characteristics such as gender, residence, age, and employment period revealed no significant differences in mean value, except career duration. Especially, the university graduates in 'Youth TLO' who had internship experience had the highest level of recognition for the expectancy. Second, both of valence and force model had influence on participation behavior and performance improvement. Notably, determination of coefficient for the valence model were higher than those for the force model. Third, level of mediation effects for the valence model were higher than those for the force model in respect of direct, indirect, and the total. Moreover, it was verified that the three motivation factors could improve individual performance and participation behavior had partial mediation effect.
BACKGROUND: The analytical method was established for determination of fungicide chinomethionat in several animal commodities using gas chromatography (GC) coupled with electron capture detector (ECD). METHODS AND RESULTS: In order to verify the applicability, the method was optimized for determining chinomethonat in various livestock products including beef, pork, chicken, milk and egg. Chinomethionat residual was extracted using acetone/dichloromethane(9/1, v/v) with magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride (salting outassociated liquid-liquid extraction). The extract was diluted by direct partitioning into dichloromethane to remove polar co-extractives in the aqueous phase. The extract was finally purified with optimized silica gel 10 g. CONCLUSION: The method limit of quantitation (MLOQ) was 0.02 mg/kg, which was in accordance with the maximum residue level (MRL) of chinomathionate as 0.05 mg/kg in livestock product. Recovery tests were carried out at two levels of concentration (MLOQ, 10 MLOQ) and resulted in good recoveries (84.8~103.0%). Reproducibilities were obtained (Coefficient of variation <5.2%), and the linearity of calibration curves were reasonable (r2>0.995) in the range of 0.01-0.2 ㎍/mL. This established analytical method was fully validated and could be useful for quantification of chinomathionat in animal commodities as official analytical method.
The problem of subsidence of the roadbed near the Honam High Speed Railway, which opened in April 2015, continues to be raised, and the ground stability of the area near the Honam High Speed Railway may also be problematic. It is very important to select the factors that determine the indicators and indicators in producing the risk maps. Existing risk indicators are calculated as the final displacement volume based on the last observed date of the observed period, and time-series indicator displacement must be identified to analyze the cause of subsidence and the behavior of the indicator. Furthermore, for a wide range of regions, it is economically inefficient to conduct direct level measurements, so we wanted to observe surface displacement using SAR images. In this paper, time series indicator displacement was observed using PS-InSAR techniques, and risk was compared by rating each factor using the difference between final indicator displacement, cumulative indicator displacement, minimum displacement and maximum displacement as factors for determining risk indicators. As a result, the risk rating of the final displacement is different from that of each factor, and we propose adding factors from different perspectives in determining risk indicators. It is expected to be an important study in finding the cause of ground subsidence and finding solutions.

Objectives: This study was performed to find phytoncide (monoterpene) emission characteristics and weather factors for application in prediction modeling for phytoncide weather services. Methods: From 2017 to 2019, one coniferous forest and one deciduous forest were selected to investigate the monthly emission characteristics and identify the correlation with weather factors. Research items were analyzed for 11 species known to be emitting the most monoterpenes. Results: Phytoncide (monoterpene) began to increase in April when trees were activated and continued to be released until November. The concentration range of monoterpene in deciduous forests was 0.0 to 427.4 ng/S㎥ and coniferous forests was 0.0 to 1,776.8 ng/S㎥. Phytoncide emission concentrations in deciduous forests were 20 to 90 percent of those in coniferous forests, and averaged 39 percent overall. The correlation between monoterpene and temperature was very close, with 0.835 for the broadleaf forest and 0.875 for the coniferous forest. Monoterpene and humidity were found to be 0.731 for the broadleaf forest and 0.681 for the coniferous forest, while wind speed showed a negative correlation of -0.482 and -0.424, respectively. Regression of temperature with phytoncide showed that the coefficient of determination (r2) was highly correlated with 0.75 for the broadleaf forest and 0.80 for the coniferous forest. Not only is phytoncide concentration affected by temperature, humidity, and wind speed, but also rainfall over the preceeding one to three days. Nearby rainfall on the day of sampling was found to have a direct effect on the physiological activities of the trees. Conclusions: Overall, if the values of monoterpene and temperature, humidity, and wind speed are used as basic factors, and rainfall from one to three days previous is replaced with complementary values, it is believed that the numerical analysis and modeling of daily and monthly phytoncide will be possible.
