  • Measurement protocols for hand anthropometry have been studied for ergonomic product design. The present study developed a 3D semi-automatic measurement protocol (3D-SAMP) which semi-automatically measures various hand dimensions using a 3D scanner. The 3D-SAMP was compared with the conventional direct measurement method (DMM) to examine its effectiveness. The 3D-SAMP consists of (1) fabricating a plaster cast of the hand, (2) placing landmarks on the plaster hand, (3) scanning the plaster hand with a 3D scanner, (4) identifying automatically the positions of the landmarks on the digital hand, and (5) extracting automatically hand anthropometric measurements (lengths, widths, thicknesses, and circumferences). An evaluation experiment conducted in the study found the 3D-SAMP preferred to the DMM in terms of reliability (the number of dimensions exceeding the variability criteria SD=2 mm and CV=5% : 3D-SAMP =2 and DMM=24) and ease of measurement (3D-SAMP=5.2 and DMM=4.3 out of 7). The 3D-SAMP can be applied to ergonomic design of a hand-held product.

  • Purpose: Direct anthropometry is an ideal method for preoperative planning and postoperative evaluation in plastic surgery, but it requires highly skilled specialty. Indirect anthropometry, especially photogrammetry, is an alternative method. In photogrammetry, standardized clinical photography is essential. Photogrammetry-based standardized clinical photography has several advantages over direct anthropometry. It is easier to measure and has less chance to make errors during measurement. Furthermore, it is possible to repeat measurements, and available for follow up study based on permanent custody. But, it is still different from actual measurement, and inherently less accurate than anthropometry. Methods: The authors revised the standardized clinical photography and then, carried out photogrammetry using Photoshop(Adobe, U.S.A.), and compared each data with those of anthropometry. The subjects were 50 males and 50 females, undergraduate medical students in twenties. Standard head position was obtained from the wire, fixed to cephalostat which indicates the Frankfort horizontal plane. All photographs were taken at the same situation such as fixed position of light, subject and camera, etc. Results: Total 96 measurements, based on 40 landmarks, consist of linear measurements, angular measurements and inclinations include 3 measurements in head, 22 in face, 15 in orbit, 28 in nose, 16 in lip and mouth, and 12 in ear. Conclusion: Normal photogrammetric data of face of Korean in twenties was obtained. Reliable photogrammetric measurements, not significantly different from anthropometric measurement statistically, accounted for 44 in 96 measurements(45.8%). Anthropometric values different from those of photogrammetric values were obtained by multiplying coefficient by photogrammetric value.

  • This study analyzes differences between the results of 3D direct measurements and automated measurements for Korean elderly females according to age groups, side somatotype, and BMI groups. This study compares the measurement differences of the direct and the 3D automated measurements for women between the ages of 70 to 85, according to age group, BMI group, and side somatotype. A comparison of the results of the direct measurement and the 3D automated measurements for elderly women show that a meaningful discrepancy exists for 29 items out of 33 items. Furthermore, the results of comparing the average error tolerance recommended by ISO20685 shows that 30 items out of 33 items exceeded ISO recommendations. The results of the automated measurement program shows a higher degree of accuracy for straight postures; however, this unsuitable for postures of elderly women with a changed somatotype. The analysis results of the measurement difference indicate the suitability of the automatic measurement programs is found to be high for stood postures, while problems seem to exist on several items along with an automated program is not appropriately used due to posture and part of body changes for elderly women. Therefore, it is recommended to develop an algorithm, that reflects the body changes of elderly women first and then upgrade the automated program equipped with a measurement size method. It is hoped that the study results can be utilized as base data for improving the automated measurement program.

  • This study estimates the measurements required to make garments but omitted from Size Korea 2010. Before the estimation of the measurements, the differences of the measurement methods were reviewed through previous research related to clothing construction and various measurement protocols that include previous Size Korea 2010 projects and ISO. The research target was 308 females aged 20 to 30 who lived in Seoul and the surrounding Gyeonggi province. A total of 43 measurements were obtained by the direct measurement method and analyzed in this study. In addition, 17 measurements which differ from the measurement method were also measured directly. These 17 measurements items were waist height, waist back height, waist height natural indentation, body rise, rise length, waist back length 1 & 2, posterior shoulder length 1 & 2, arm length 1 & 2, upper arm circumference 1 & 2, elbow circumference 1 & 2, and waist circumference 1 & 2. To analyze the differences in measurements, the subjects were divided into 2 age groups (20's and 30's). The results were as follows: First, there were big differences in stature, waist height, shoulder length, total length, and neck shoulder point to breast points by age groups; however, there were no differences in 17 measurement (such as shoulder angles) by age groups. Second, it was determined that 'waist circumference 1 & 2', 'waist back length 1 & 2', 'arm length 1 & 2', 'elbow circumference 1 & 2', 'upper arm circumference 1 & 2' and 'body rise & rise length' had significant differences by measurement methods in the entire group as well as each age group. Third, the values of 8 measurements omitted from Size Korea 2010 were estimated using similar measurements. The results of the correlation analysis were utilized to select reasonable independent measurements. Finally, 10 regression equations were obtained by regression analysis; subsequently, these will be useful for estimation of omitted measurements in Size Korea 2010.

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate the relationship between anthropometric data of foot and other body sizes. to categorize the foot shape of elementary school boys and to find out determinant factors related the foot that enable us to deduce the foot shape and size for the design of more comfortable shoes. Subjects of this study were 249 elementary school boys of age ranged from 6 to 11 residing Seoul and lncheon area. Anthropometric sizes were measured with the direct measurement method using Martin scales and the indirect measurement method using digital photos. Pearson's correlation, factor analysis. cluster analysis. analysis of variance, post-hoc test, and cross tabs were performed for statistical analysis of the data by SPSS program. From the investigation on the relationship between foot-related items and body items, most items of foot measure were significantly related to body size items. However, angle of the foot did not related to other body sizes although other height items and mass items of the foot did have relationships with other body sizes. Results of ANOVA indicated there were significant differences in foot-related items except for items of foot angle and all body anthropometric items by subjects' age. This implicates big toe angle, little toe angle and foot ratio factors are required in sizing shoes besides foot length. On the basis of cluster analysis using factor scores. three different foot shapes were categorized. Type 1 was large and wide foot, Type 2 was small and narrow foot with large toe angle. and Type 3 was medium foot with no deformity on big toe. These three groups show significant differences in almost all measurement items. However, Rorher index and foot angle didn't show any significant differences among groups. This implicates the foot shape can be a determinant of shoe size.

  • Background: In cleft lip patients, the necessity of a thorough preoperative analysis of facial deformities before reconstruction is unquestioned. The surgical plan of cleft lip patient is based on the information gained from our preoperative anthropometric evaluation. A variety of commercially available three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging systems are currently introduced to us in plastic surgery for these use. However, few studies have been published on the soft tissue morphology of unrepaired cleft infants described by these 3D surface imaging systems. Methods: The purpose of this study is to determine the accuracy of facial anthropometric measurements obtained through digital 3D photogrammetry and to compare with direct anthropometry for measurement in unilateral cleft lip patients. We compared our patients with three measurements of dimension made on both sides: heminasal width, labial height, and transverse lip length. Results: The preoperative measurements were not significantly different in both side of labial height and left side of heminasal width. Statistically significant differences were found on both side of transverse lip length and right side of heminasal width. Although the half of preoperative measurements were significantly different, trends of results showed average results were comparable. Conclusion: This is the first study in Korea to simultaneously compare digital 3D photogrammetry with traditional direct anthropometry in unilateral cleft lip patients. We desire this study could contribute the methodological choice of the many researchers for proper surgical planning in cleft lip reconstruction field.

  • Clothing shape is principally described in seven factors that are composed of clothing design, clothing material, clothing size, pattern design, sewing method and body motion etc. The aims of this study was to measurement out-line space-shape variation of clothing fitness with body by using the image processing. The subjects for direct anthropometric measurements were 248 female college students aged from 19 to 22. The data were statistically analyzed by principal analysis and cluster analysis. The results selected one somatotype. for the out-line space-shape variation of clothing fitness with body, there dimensional clothing shapes measured. and cross-sectional clothing shape obtained by the measurement was considered to be space wave form. The out-line space-shape variation of clothing fitness with body was observed between the node number and amplitudes of clothing wave form, and node number was determined at the maxim of space-shape amplitude, and the space-shape amplitudes have related with aspect ratio of cross-sectional shape. • Concept of the comfort and fitness becomes a major concern in the basic function of the ready-made clothes. Accordingly a more sophiscated classification of the human morphological characteristics is strongly required for the effective clothing construction. This research was performed to classify and characterize Korean adult males anthropometrically. Sample size was 1290 subjects and their age range was from 19 to 54 years old. Sampling was carried out by the stratified sampling method. Data were collected by the direct anthropometric measurement. 75 variables in total were applied to classify the bodytypes. Data were analyzed by the multivariate method, especially factor and cluster analysis. The high factor loading items extracted by factor analysis were based to determine the variables of the cluster analysis for the similar bodytypes respectively. In the part of the trunk, 19 variables from the data were applied to classify the bodytypes of trunk by Ward's minimum variance method. The groups forming a cluster were subdivided into 5 sets by cross-tabulation extracted by the hierarchical culster analysis. Type 3 and 4 in trunk were composed of the majority of 55.6% of the subjects. The Korean adult males had relatively well-balanced bodytypes in trunk.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify size specifications of the Korean adult male for the men's ready-made garments, especially jacket and dress shirts. By the stratified sampling method, data were collected by the real anthropometric measurement and by the photo-graphic sources. Sample size was 532 subjects as the sample and their age range was from 28 to 35 years old. 66 variables from the direct anthropometric data in total were applied to analyze. ANOVA in SPSS WIN package was applied to the data and the expected frequency distribution of 10.000 men was calculated by the extraction of density function. This study was performed to classify size specifications by the control dimensions and at the same interval of KS-K. The drop values of 15, 12 and 9 have the high coverage rate of 26.00%, 24.29% and 21.06% respectively and are composed of the majority of 71.35% of the subjects. According to the drop values, size specifications and distribution of control and reference dimensions are predicted. About 52.12% of the expected frequency distribution without stature were covered by 12 size specifications.
