The objective of this present study is to understand long term(500 years) thermohydromechanical interaction behavior in the vicinity of a repository cavern on the joint location and repository depth variations. The model includes a saturated discontinuous granitic rock mass, PWR spent nuclear fuel in a disposal canister surrounded with compacted bentonite inside a deposition hole, and mixed bentonite backfilled in the rest of the space within a repository cavern. It is assumed that two joint sets exist within the model. Joint set 1 includes joints of 56$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m, and joint set 2 is in the perpendicular direction to joint set 1 and includes joints of 34$^{\circ}$ dip angle, spaced at 20 m. In order to understand the behavior change on the joint location variations, 5 different models of 500m in depth are analyzed, and additional 3 different models of 1000 m in depth are analyzed to understand the effect of depth variation.

As opposed to using fossil fuels, we need to use eco-friendly resources such as sunlight, raindrops and wind to produce electricity and combat environmental pollution. A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a device that converts mechanical energy into electricity by inducing repetitive contact and separation of two dissimilar materials. During the contact and separation processes, electron flow occurs owing to a change in electric potential of the contacting surface caused by contact electrification and electrostatic induction mechanisms. A solid-solid contact TENG is widely known, but it is possible to generate electricity via liquid-solid contact. Therefore, by designing a hydrophobic TENG, we can gather electricity from raindrop energy in a feasible manner. To fabricate the superhydrophobic surface of TENGs, we employ a dip coating technique to synthesize an octadecylamine (ODA)- and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based coating on polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The synthesized coating exhibits superhydrophobicity with a contact angle greater than 150° and generates a current of 2.2 ㎂/L while water droplets fall onto it continuously. Hence, we prepare a box-type TENG, with the ODA/PDMS coating deposited on the inside, and place a 1.5 mL water droplet into it. Resultantly, we confirm that the induced vibration causes continuous impacts between the ODA/PDMS coating and the water, generating approximately 100 pA for each impact.
The hysteretic characteristics of giant magnetoimpedance (GMI) profiles have been measured in Co-based amorphous ribbon with various anisotropy angles $\theta_k$, and they have been analyzed by using the Stoner-Wohl-farth model. Two-peaks behavior with a dip near zero field is revealed in the measured GMI profile at 10 MHz irrespective of $\theta_k$. The negligible hysteresis of the field fur the dip is close to the calculation assuming the magnetization jump from a metastable to stable state. However, the hysteretic asymmetry far the angle range of $20^\circ\leq\theta_k < 60^\circ$ is well described by the divergence in the calculation without the magnetization jump. The asymmetry for $\theta_k\geq60^\circ$ may be due to the divergence, but the shapes of measured profiles are quite different from the calculations with single peak near zero field, indicating that Stoner-Wohlfarth model can be well used to describe GMI characteristics for the anisotropy angle range of $20^\circ\leq\theta_k < 60^\circ$at the frequency of 10 MHz in Co-based amorphous ribbons.
Shale gas formations exhibit strong mechanical and strength anisotropies. Thus, it is necessary to study the effect of anisotropy on the hydraulic fracture initiation pressure. The calculation model for the in-situ stress of the bedding formation is improved according to the effective stress theory. An analytical model of the stresses around wellbore in shale gas reservoirs, in consideration of stratum dip direction, dip angle, and in-situ stress azimuth, has been built. Besides, this work established a calculation model for the stress around the perforation holes. In combination with the tensile failure criterion, a prediction model for the hydraulic fracture initiation pressure in the shale gas reservoirs is put forward. The error between the prediction result and the measured value for the shale gas reservoir in the southern Sichuan Province is only 3.5%. Specifically, effects of factors including elasticity modulus, Poisson's ratio, in-situ stress ratio, tensile strength, perforation angle (the angle between perforation direction and the maximum principal stress) of anisotropic formations on hydraulic fracture initiation pressure have been investigated. The perforation angle has the largest effect on the fracture initiation pressure, followed by the in-situ stress ratio, ratio of tensile strength to pore pressure, and the anisotropy ratio of elasticity moduli as the last. The effect of the anisotropy ratio of the Poisson's ratio on the fracture initiation pressure can be ignored. This study provides a reference for the hydraulic fracturing design in shale gas wells.
Landslides are often triggered by weak interlayers initiated in tailings dam foundations, and hazards gradually occur. This is serious for landslides in high tailings dams due to their high potential energy. Tailing samples with a fine-grained interlayer at a set dip angle were prepared. Consolidated undrained (CU) triaxial shear tests were carried out by using a high-pressure triaxial apparatus. The results were compared with the results under a low confining pressure. Four reasons were summarized for high tailings dams more prone to instability than low dams. The shear strength of the samples with dipping interlayers decreases with increasing dip angle. An obvious straight drop in the stress path after the peak occurs in samples with dipping interlayers at an angle of 60°. The effect of the interlayer on the mechanical behaviour of tailings is very sensitive, especially for the sample with a dipping interlayer at an angle of 60°. Shear slipping along the interlayer should be given more attention in tailings dams. Compared with the results under low confining pressure, the stress decreases continuously for the samples with dipping interlayers at large angles under high confining pressure. The positive pore pressure, which reduces the effective stress, occurred in tailings samples under high confining pressure. The residual strength of tailings under high confining pressure is smaller than that under low confining pressure. These factors increase the dam break risk and the disaster impact for high tailings dams.

A magnetic compass module must be calibrated accurately before use. Moreover, the calibration process must be performed taking into account any magnetic dip if the magnetic compass module has tilt angles. For this, a calibration method for a magnetic compass module is explained. Tilt error of the magnetic compass module is compensated using a biaxial accelerometer generally. The accelerometer error causes a tilt angle calculation error that gives rise to an azimuth calculation error. For error property analysis, error equations are derived and simulations are performed. In the simulation results, the accuracy of derived error equations is verified. If a biaxial magnetic compass module is used instead of a triaxial one, the magnetic dip and z-axis magnetic compass data must be estimated for tilt compensation. Lastly, estimation equations for the magnetic dip and z-axis magnetic compass data are derived, and the performance of the equations is verified based on a simulation.
Hot dip aluminizing (HDA) is widely used in industry for improving corrosion resistance of material. The formation of intermetallic compound layers during the contact between dissimilar materials at high temperature is common phenomenon. Generally, intermetallic compound layers of $Fe_2Al_5$ and $FeAl_3$ are formed at the Al alloy and Fe substrate interface. In case of cast iron, high contact angle of graphite existed in the matrix inhibits the formation of intermetallic compound layer, which carry with it the disadvantage of a reduced reaction area and mechanical properties. In present work, the process for the removal of graphite existed on the surface of specimen has been investigated. And also HDA was proceeded at $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes in aluminum alloy melt. The efficiency of graphite removal was increased with the reduction of particle size in sanding process. Graphite appears to be present both in the region of melting followed by re-solidification and in the intermetallic compound layer, which could be attributed to the fact that the surface of cast iron is melted down by the formation of low melting point phase with the diffusion of Al and Si to the cast iron. Intermetallic compound layer consisted of $Fe(Al,Si)_3$ and $Fe_2Al_5Si$, the layer formed at cast iron side contained lower amount of Si.
A model study was conducted for the investigation of apparent resistivity variation along with electric resistivity variation of host rock and dip variation of bed. Experiments were carried out for the cases of horizontal and dipping beds in a water tank by using Wenner and Schlumberger arrays and by changing salinity of water. The ratios of resistivity values of the bed to that of brine were 1 : 10, 1 : 50, 1 : 100 and 1 : 500. Natural coally-shale of $55cm{\times}35cm{\times}3.5cm$ was used as a bed for experimental model, and brine as a host rock. Equi-resistivity curves and characteristic curves were obtained for each case of the experiment. The equi-resistivity curve was drawn both on the cross section parallel to strike of bed and longitudinal section perpendicular to it. The characteristic curve was drawn on the cross section. In the case of dipping bed of different dips, the curves are parallel to the boundary of the bed in the upper part of the bed, and are inclined to the opposite direction with the same angle of the dip of bed in the lower part. We can deduce, from the equi-resistivity curves, the location, shape and dip of the bed. It is shown in the characteristic curves that when the ratio of resistivity value of bed to that of host rock increases, the slope of curves becomes steeper, location of low-resistivity zone lower, and the width of it narrower. The slope of curves also becomes steeper when dip of bed increases. We can deduce, from the characteristic curves, the ratio of resistivity values between adjacent beds. It was found out from the experiments that electric resistivity method could be applicable to prospecting for underground geology with an electric resistivity contrast of 1 : 10. This fact strongly suggests that distinction of coal from coally-shale could be possible in a certain field condition.
This study was for analysing the sedimentary rock slope stability and providing the reinforcement method that can heighten stability. The study area consists of Cretaceous basalt or basaltic tuff belonging to Hak-Bong Basalt Formation in Ha-Yang Group. Nature of geological structure confirmed in this area ars bedding, joint and fault. Majority of geological structure that affect most relationship rock slope stability is bedding. It is shown that dip direction is 120~160/15~25. In other structure, joint sets are shown that dip direction of set 1 is 310~330/65~85 and set 2 is 230~250/70~85. Joint set 3 shows above 85$^{\circ}$ high angle on NE trend although do not show clear. Stability analysis about rock slope used kinematic analysis, limit equilibrium method and FLAC by numerical analysis method. FLAC is continuum model that use Fintie Defferentce Method, but could use Interfaces Module and get discrete model's analysis effect such as UDEC.
The focal mechanism of the Hongsung Earthquake (1978. Oct. 7, M$_L$=5.0, Latitude 36.62N, Longitude 1 26.67E) was evaulated using the polarity distribution of the P-Waveforms. Through the non-linear computer process, the compatibility of polarity distributions of the 9 P-Waveforms observed at teleseismic distances from the Hongsung Earthquake epicenter was investigated to those of the focal mechanism determined from the varying strike, dip and rake angles. The resultant values for the strike and dip angle of the principal fault plane, which apparently matches very well the sunface lineament of the Hongsung region, are determined to be about 247 degree and 78 degree with uncertainties, respectively. However, the rake angle of the focal mechanism has wide range of 40 degree to 160 degree, which is mainly due to the poor coverage of the azimuthal angle of the observed seismic stations. Due to the consistency of principal stress axes, the resultant focal mechanism could support the current stress regime of that region, which may be caused by subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Eurasia Plate along the Japan Trench. It also provides information of seismic source characteristics of the part of the Korean Peninsula for aseismic design criteria such as Site Specific Response Spectrum and Strong Ground Motion Time History for the nuclear power plants and related nuclear waste disposal facility sites.
