  • A series of polyhydroxyamides(PHAs) having ether linkages in the polymer backbone were prepared via solution polycondensation at low temperature. These polymers were studied by FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$, DSC, TGA and PCFC. The PHAs exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of $0.5{\sim}1.1dL/g\;at\;35^{\circ}C$ in DMAc solution. Most of PHAs except PHA 3 were soluble in polar organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylacetamide(DMAc), N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP), and N,N-dimethylform-amide(DMF). Subsequent thermal treatment of PHAs afforded polybenzoxazols(PBOs). However, the PBOs were insoluble in a variety of solvents. Most of the PBOs except PBO 3 showed glass-transition temperature($T_g$) in the range of $200{\sim}246^{\circ}C$ by DSC and maximum weight loss temperature in the range of $597{\sim}697^{\circ}C$ in nitrogen by TGA. PBOs showed high char yields in the range of $51{\sim}64%$. PCFC results of the PBOs showed the heat release(HR) capacity, $8{\sim}65J/gK$ and total heat release(total HR), $2.4{\sim}4.7kJ/g$.

  • Transient mixing states of two different fuel oils, dimethylformamide (DMF) oil and JetA1 oil, were investigated by using a color image processing and a neural network. A tank ($D{\times}H$, $310{\times}370mm$) was filled with JetA1 oil. The DMF oil was filled at a top tank, and was mixed with the JetA1 oil in the tank mixing tank via a sudden opening which was performed by nitrogen gas with 1.9 bar. An impeller was rotated with 700 rpm for mixing enhancements of the two fuel oils. To visualize the mixing state of the DMF oil with the JetA1 oil, the DMF oil was coated with Rhodamine B whose color was red. A LCD monitor was used for uniform illumination. The color changes of the DMF oil were captured by a camcoder and the images were transferred to a host computer for quantifying the information of color changes. The color images of two mixed oils were captured with the camcoder. The R, G, B color information of the captured images was used to quantify the concentration of the DMF oil. To quantify the concentration of the DMF oil in the JetA1 oil, a calibration of color-to-concentration was carried out before the main experiment was done. Transient mixing states of DMF oil with the JetA1 oil since after the sudden infiltration were quantified and characterized with the constructed visualization technique.

  • Macrofore formation in silicon and other semiconductors using electrochemical etching processes has been, in the last years, a subject of great attention of both theory and practice. Its first reason of concern is new areas of macropore silicone applications arising from microelectromechanical systems processing (MEMS), membrane techniques, solar cells, sensors, photonic crystals, and new technologies like a silicon-on-nothing (SON) technology. Its formation mechanism with a rich variety of controllable microstructures and their many potential applications have been studied extensively recently. Porous silicon is formed by anodic etching of crystalline silicon in hydrofluoric acid. During the etching process holes are required to enable the dissolution of the silicon anode. For p-type silicon, holes are the majority charge carriers, therefore porous silicon can be formed under the action of a positive bias on the silicon anode. For n-type silicon, holes to dissolve silicon is supplied by illuminating n-type silicon with above-band-gap light which allows sufficient generation of holes. To make a desired three-dimensional nano- or micro-structures, pre-structuring the masked surface in KOH solution to form a periodic array of etch pits before electrochemical etching. Due to enhanced electric field, the holes are efficiently collected at the pore tips for etching. The depletion of holes in the space charge region prevents silicon dissolution at the sidewalls, enabling anisotropic etching for the trenches. This is correct theoretical explanation for n-type Si etching. However, there are a few experimental repors in p-type silicon, while a number of theoretical models have been worked out to explain experimental dependence observed. To perform ordered macrofore formaion for p-type silicon, various kinds of mask patterns to make initial KOH etch pits were used. In order to understand the roles played by the kinds of etching solution in the formation of pillar arrays, we have undertaken a systematic study of the solvent effects in mixtures of HF, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), iso-propanol, and mixtures of HF with water on the macrofore structure formation on monocrystalline p-type silicon with a resistivity varying between 10 ~ 0.01 $\Omega$ cm. The etching solution including the iso-propanol produced a best three dimensional pillar structures. The experimental results are discussed on the base of Lehmann's comprehensive model based on SCR width.

  • Three acrylic copolymers containing tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (AlQ3) pendant group (25 wt%), acrylateco-HEMA-$AlQ_3$ (25 wt%), were successfully synthesized by free radical polymerization from acrylates [methyl methacrylate (MMA), acrylonitrile (AN) or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)] with HEMA functionalized with AlQ3 pendant groups (HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$). The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of MMA-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 1), AN-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 2) and HEMA-co-HEMA-p-$AlQ_3$ (copolymer 3) were found to be 158, 150 and $126^{\circ}C$, respectively. They have good thermal stability: a very desirable feature for the stability of OLEDs. Their solubility, thermal properties, UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence behaviors were investigated. They were found to be soluble in various organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dimethylformamide (DMF), toluene and chloroform. It was also found that the UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence behaviors of these copolymers were similar to those of pristine $AlQ_3$. Green organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have also been fabricated using these copolymers as light emission/electron transport components obtained easily by spin coating, and their current density voltage (J-V) curves were compared. The OLED device of the copolymer 3 had the lowest turn-on voltage of about 2 V compared to other copolymer types devices.

  • Mono-oxo-bridged binuclear molybdenum(V) complex, $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]$ produces di-oxo-bridged binuclear molybdenum(V) complex, $[Mo_2O_4(Phen)_2(NCS)_2]$ in water + co-solvent, where the co-solvent are acetone, acetonitrile and N,N-dimethylformamide. The rate of conversion of $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]\;into\;[Mo_2O_4(Phen)_2(NCS)_2]$ has been measured by spectrophotometric method. Temperature was $10^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C$ and pressure was varied up to 1500 bar. The rate constants are increased with increasing water mole fraction and decreased with increasing concentration of hydrogen ion. The order of oxygen ring formation reaction rate in various cosolvent is as follows, ACT > AN > DMF which is agreed with solvent dielectric constants. The observed negative activation entropy ($[\Delta}S^{\neq}$), activation volume($[\Delta}V^{\neq}$) and activation compressibility coefficient(${\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}$) values show that the solvent water molecule is strongly attracted to the complex at transition state. From these results, the oxygen ring formation reaction of $[Mo_2O_3(Phen)_2(NCS)_4]$ is believed association mechanism.

  • Cr(VI)-4-(dimethylamino)pyridine[4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium chlorochromate] was synthesized by the reaction of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine with chromium trioxide in 6M-HCl, and characterized by IR, ICP. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol using 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium chlorochromate in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase of the dielectric constant(${\varepsilon}$), in the order: cyclohexene$H_2SO_4$ solution), 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium chlorochromate oxidized benzyl alcohol and its derivatives(p-$OCH_3$, m-$CH_3$, H, m-$OCH_3$, m-Cl, m-$NO_2$) smoothly in DMF. Electron-donating substituents accelerated the reaction, whereas electron acceptor groups retarded the reaction. The Hammett reaction constant(${\rho}$) was -0.68(303K). The observed experimental data was used to rationalize the hydride ion transfer in the rate-determining step.

  • The purpose of this study was to find a suitable cosolvent to $CS_2$ so that desorption efficiency can be improved for both polar and non-polar organic solvent mixtures collected on an activated charcoal tube. Cosolvents added to $CS_2$ include: DMF(N,N-dimethylformamide): $CS_2$ (v/v 1:99), DMF:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97), BC (butyl carbitol, 2-(2-butoxy ethoxy) ethanol):$CS_2$(v/v 1:99), and BC:$CS_2$(v/v 3:97)). The results obtained were as follows : 1. Comparing the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ with those of $CS_2$ with 1, 3, 5 % DMF and 1, 3 % BC cosolvents for two different groups of charcoal tubes each containing 8 different polar and non-polar organic solvents with 3 different concentration levels, the desorption efficiencies of the cosolvent-added $CS_2$ increased significantly for all polar organic solvents regardless of concentration levels tested. For non-polar organic solvents, no noticeable improvement was detected except xylene and trichloroethylene. The desorption efficiency of xylene increased significantly while that of trichloroethylene increased significantly at the lowest concentration level tested. 2. Either 5 % DMF or 3 % BC was the most suitable cosolvent because the desorption efficiency for non-polar organic solvent mixtures was similar or slightly improved compared with that of $CS_2$, while those of for polar organic solvent mixtures were above 75 % except for cyclohexanone. 3. The smallest variations in desorption efficiency represented by the ratio calculated from the maximum to minimum desorption efficiency for all concentration levels tested were found when 3 % BC was used as a cosolvent. The above results indicate that the desorption efficiency of $CS_2$ particularly for polar organic solvent mixtures collected on a charcoal tube can be significantly improved by the use of cosolvents such as 5 % DMF or 3 % BC. A caution, however, is in order for selecting a cosolvent whenever the cosolvent itself is being used in the workplace or the impurities contained in the cosolvent may interfere with the analytical results. In addition, to improve desorption efficiencies for such organic solvents as cyclohexanone or ketones, it is recommended to use suitable collection and desorption media other than the traditional method of charcoal tube collection/$CS_2$ desorption.

  • The synthesis of bio polyol from renewable resources has attracted attention in recent years. In particular, it is important to take advantage of bio polyols in the synthesis of polymers. In this study, a series of dimethylformamide (DMF) based polyurethanes were synthesized using polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol (PO3G: polytrimethylene ether glycol prepared from 1, 3-propanediol produced by fermentation from corn sugar), methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butandiol (BD). The properties of prepared polyurethane films and the cell structure of wet type artificial leather were investigated. As the bio polyol content increased, the tensile strength of polyurethane films decreased, however, the elongation at break increased significantly. As a result of thermal characteristics analysis, the glass transition temperature of polyurethanes increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol. As a result of comparing the cell characteristics of wet type artificial leathers prepared in this study, it was found that the number and uniformity of cells formed in the artificial leather samples increased when increasing the content of polycarbonate polyol in polycarbonate polyol/bio polyol. From these results, it was found that DMF-based polyurethane containing an appropriate amount of bio polyol could be used for wet type artificial leather. The bio textile analysis system according to ASTM standard was used to measure the bio carbon content of polyurethane. The content of bio carbon increased proportionally with the increase of bio polyol content used in polyurethane synthesis.

  • The performance of carbon fiber is important for the production of these high-quality polymer composite materials such as CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). For this purpose, it is essential to use an optimized spinning process for improving the mechanical, physical, and structural properties of the precursor fiber, which greatly affects the properties of the carbon fiber, and the use of a suitable precursor polymer. In this study, the content of MAA (Methacrylic Acid), MAA injection time, and concentration of AIBN (2,2'-Azobis(2-methylpropionitrile)) were set as parameters for the polymer synthesis process, and Poly(AN-co-MAA) (poly(acrylonitrile-co-methacrylic acid)) was polymerized by solution polymerization. Poly(AN-co-MAA) with a molecular weight of 305,138 g/mol and an MAA ratio of 4.2% was dissolved in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide) at a concentration of 16.0 wt%, and then a precursor fiber was prepared through dry-jet-wet spinning. The precursor fiber had a tensile strength of ~1.06 GPa and a tensile modulus of ~22.01 GPa, and no voids and structural defects were observed on the fiber.

  • In this study, coffee waste was recycled into nitrogen-doped porous carbon fibers as an active material for high-energy EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitors). The coffee waste was mixed with polyvinylpyrrolidone and dissolved into dimethylformamide. The mixture was then electrospun to fabricate coffee waste-derived nanofibers (Bare-CWNF), and carbonization process was followed under a nitrogen atmosphere at 900℃. Similar to Bare-CWNF, the as-synthesized carbonized coffee waste-derived nanofibers (Carbonized-CWNF) maintained its fibrous form while preserving the composition of nitrogen. The electrochemical performance was analyzed for carbonized coffee waste (Carbonized-CW)-, carbonized PAN-derived nanofibers (Carbonized-PNF)-, and Carbonized-CWNF-based electrodes in the operating voltage window of -1.0-0.0V, Among the electrodes, Carbonized-CWNF-based electrodes exhibited the highest specific capacitance of 123.8F g-1 at 1A g-1 owing to presence of nitrogen and porous structure. As a result, nitrogen-contained porous carbon fibers synthesized from coffee waste showed excellent electrochemical performance as electrodes for high-energy EDLC. The experimental designed in this study successfully demonstrated the recycling of the coffee waste, one of the plant-based biomass that causes the environmental pollution into high-energy materials, also, attaining the ecofriendliness.
