The interaction of laminar mixed convection and surface radiation in a two-dimensional channel with an array of rectangular blocks is analyzed numerically. Three blocks are maintained at high temperature and the other bottom and top horizontal walls are insulated. Discrete ordinate method(DOM) is introduced to analyze the radiative heat transfer. The effects of the variations of Reynolds number and channel specifications on the heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are correlated and presented in terms of Reynolds number and dimensionless geometric parameters such as the block spacing, height and channel spacing. For the conditions considered in this study, average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are strongly influenced by the channel spacing and Reynolds number but weakly influenced by the block spacing and block height.
Friction reduction between sliding hydraulic machine components is required to improve efficiency and reliability of hydraulic machineries. It is recently reported that surface texturing on sliding bearing surfaces can reduce the friction force highly. In this paper, numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of dimple numbers and inlet boundary pressures on the lubrication characteristics of a parallel sliding bearing using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. The results show that the pressure distribution, load capacity, dimensionless friction force and leakage with dimple number and their locations, and inlet pressures. The overall lubrication characteristics are highly affected by dimple numbers and boundary pressure. The numerical method adopted and results can be used in design of efficient hydraulic machine components.

Convective heat transfer in a two-dimensional horizontal and vertical channel with isothermal rectangular beams attached to one adiabatic wall is investigated from the numerical solution of Navier-Stokes and energy equations. The solutions have been obtained for dimensionless beam spacings, S/L=1~4, aspect ratios of beam, H/B=0.25~4, Reynolds numbers, Re=50~1000 and Grashof numbers, $Gr=0{\sim}5{\times}10^4$. The total mean Nusselt number, Nu_T for horizontal and vertical channels shows same value at Gr=0. As Gr increases, Nu_T for horizontal channel increases, but Nu_T for vertical channel shows similar value at S/L=2, H/B=0.25, Re=100. The total mean Nusselt number for horizontal channel is higher than that for vertical channel. As H/B increases, $Nu_T$ for both channel decrease at $Gr=10^4$, Re=100.

The local Nusselt numbers have been measured for a round turbulent jet impinging on the concave surface with and without rib. Liquid crystal/transient method was used to determine the Nusselt number distributions along the surface. The temperature on the surface was measured using liquid crystal and a digital color image processing system. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number (Re) 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance (L/d) from 4 to 10, the dimensionless surface curvature (d/D) 0.056, and the rib type (height ($d_1$) 0.2 cm, pitch (p) from 1.2 to 3.2 cm). It was founded that only when $L/d{\geq}6$, the average Nusselt numbers on the concave surface with rib are higher than those without rib, mainly due to an increase in the turbulent intensity caused by the effect of rib attached to the wall surface. It was realized that the rib attached to the concave surface may no longer enhance the heat transfer rate or even lowers it depending on the rib type and flow conditions. In addition, the results by the steady-state method using the gold-film Intrex were in good agreement with those by the transient shroud method.

The interaction of turbulent mixed convection and surface radiation in a three-dimensional channel with the heated blocks is analyzed numerically. Two blocks are maintained at high temperature and the other bottom and horizontal walls are insulated. S-4 method is employed to calculate the effect of the radiative heat transfer. The low Reynolds number k-$\varepsilon$ model proposed by Launder and Sharma is used to estimate the turbulent influence on the heat transfer enhancement. From above modeling, the effects of various channel specifications on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are investigated. The variables used for the present study are Reynolds number, block spacing, the channel height spacing for block and the emissivity. Average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are correlated and presented in terms of Reynolds number, emissivity and dimensionless geometric parameters. For the range of conditions in this study, average Nusselt numbers along the block surfaces are strongly influenced by the Reynolds numbers and channel height spacing for block but weakly influenced by the block spacing and the emissivity of the adiabatic walls.

The turbulent heat transfer from a round oblique impinging jet on a concave surface were experimentally investigated. The transient measurement method using liquid crystal was used in this study. In this measurement, a preheated wall was suddenly exposed to an impinging jet while recording the response of liquid crystals to measure surface temperature. The Reynolds numbers were 11000, 23000 and 50000, nozzle-to-surface distance ratio was from 2 to 10 and the surface angles were a =$0^{\circ}\;15^{\circ},\;30^{\circ}and\;40^{\circ}$. Correlations of the stagnation point Nusselt numbers with Reynolds number, jet-to-surface distance ratio and dimensionless surface angle, which account for the surface inclined angle, are presented. The maximum Nusselt numbers, in this experiment, occurred in the direction of upstream. The displacement of the maximum Nusselt number from the stagnation point increases with increasing surface angle or decreasing nozzle-to-surface distance. In this experiment, the maximum displacement is about 0.7 times of the jet nozzle diameter when surface curvature, D/d is 10.

The two-phase turbulent flow past an interface-piercing circular cylinder is studied using a high-fidelity orthogonal curvilinear grid solver with a Lagrangian dynamic subgrid-scale model for large-eddy simulation and a coupled level set and volume of fluid method for air-water interface tracking. The simulations cover the sub-critical and critical and post critical regimes of the Reynolds and sub and super-critical Froude numbers in order to investigate the effect of both dimensionless parameters on the flow. Significant changes in flow features near the air-water interface were observed as the Reynolds number was increased from the sub-critical to the critical regime. The interface makes the separation point near the interface much delayed for all Reynolds numbers. The separation region at intermediate depths is remarkably reduced for the critical Reynolds number regime. The deep flow resembles the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder, but includes the effect of the free-surface and the limited span length for sub-critical Reynolds numbers. At different Froude numbers, the air-water interface exhibits significantly changed structures, including breaking bow waves with splashes and bubbles at high Froude numbers. Instantaneous and mean flow features such as interface structures, vortex shedding, Reynolds stresses, and vorticity transport are also analyzed. The results are compared with reference experimental data available in the literature. The deep flow is also compared with the single-phase turbulent flow past a circular cylinder in the similar ranges of Reynolds numbers. Discussion is provided concerning the limitations of the current simulations and available experimental data along with future research.

The heat transfer and flow measurements on a cylindrical pedestal mounted on a flat surface with a turbulent impinging jet were made. The experiments were made for the jet Reynolds number of Re = 23,000, the dimensionless nozzle-to-surface distance of L/d = 2~10, the dimensionless pedestal height of H/D = 0~1.5. Measurements of the surface temperature and the Nusselt number distributions on the plate surface were made using liquid crystal and shroud-transient technique. Flow measurements involve smoke flow visualization and the wall pressure coefficient. The results show that the wall pressure coefficient sharply decreases along the upper surface of the pedestal. However, the pressure increases when the fluid escapes from the pedestal and then collides on the plate surface. The secondary maxima in the Nusselt numbers occur in the region of 1.0 $\leq$ r/d $\leq$ 1.9. Their values for the case of H/D = 0.5 are maximum 80% higher than those for other cases. The formation of the secondary maxima may be attributed to the reattachment of flow on the plate surface which was separated at the edge of the pedestal.

In order to prevent the decay heat removal system from failure due to air entrainment or free surface vortex in the piping system, a set of simulating experiments for the midloop operation of nuclear power plant was performed. Through these experiments, a relation between the dimensionless numbers, such as submergence H/d, froude number, reynolds number, was found. However, the effect of reynolds number was negligible for the operation conditions of Nuclear power plant. It was also found that the perturbation of the system by the disturbance such as pump start, valve operation, etc., has a strong effect on the free surface vortex. Furthermore, from a view point of reactor safery, a modified inlet device of reducer type is strongly recommendable for the prevention of air entrainment.
The present paper investigated the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting process of a phase-change material (PCM). Furthermore, the present study considered constant heat flux boundary conditions unlike many of the previous researches adopted constant wall temperature conditions. Therefore, in the present study, modified dimensionless parameters such as Ste* and Ra* were used. Also, general relationships between melting with ultrasonic vibrations and melting without ultrasonic vibrations were established during the melting of PCM. Experimental observations show that the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on heat transfer is very important throughout the melting process. The results of the present study reveal that ultrasonic vibrations accompany the effects like agitation, acoustic streaming, cavitation, and oscillating fluid motion. Such effects are a prime mechanism in the overall melting process when ultrasonic vibrations are applied. They enhance the melting process as much as 2.5 tildes, compared with the result of natural melting. Also, energy can be saved by applying ultrasonic vibrations to the natural melting. In addition, various time-wise dimensionless numbers provide conclusive evidence of the important role of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting phenomena.
