Concepts Analysis of Ethical Dilemma (윤리적 딜레마에 대한 개념 분석)

  • Purpose: Although ethical dilemma is important concept in nursing and many research is accomplished, some difference in defining ethical dilemma among researchers. Therefore the purpose of this analysis was to correct understanding and using about ethical dilemma by clarify the attributes of ethical dilemma. Method: The concept analysis model suggested by Walker and Avant(1988) is used to clarify what is meant by the term 'ethical dilemma'. Results: The defining attributes of ethical dilemma identified in this study were as follows. First, It is simultaneously occurrence that above two conflictive ethical alternatives. Second, It is ought to choose one of the above two conflictive ethical alternatives. Third, It is difficult to compare with two alternatives. Fourth, It is cannot delay the choices. Fifth, It is cannot do satisfactory resolution. Six, It is broken out fix, loss or feeling of powerlessness to an individual. Conclusion: In this study, a concept analysis of ethical dilemma was performed to more clearly understand ethical dilemma. It is hoped that this analysis will stimulate further study for developing strategies for prevention of nurses' ethical dilemma.

Ethical Dilemma and Coping Types in Nurses (간호사의 윤리적 딜레마와 대처유형)

  • This study was conducted to examine the ethical dilemma and coping types of nurses, and identify the relationship between ethical dilemma and coping types of nurses. The subjects of this study consisted of 210 nurses from two university hospitals in Taegu and one university hospital and one general hospital in Pohang. The data were collected with self reported questionnaire from June 2003 to July 2003. The data were analysed using the SPSS program. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The mean score of level of ethical dilemma was 0.55/1, and client area was the highest(M=0.65). 2. The mean score of level of coping about ethical dilemma was 2.22/4, and seeking social support area was the highest (M=2.42). 3. The conflict of proffering the best care with courtesy to impolite patient was the highest in total items of ethical dilemma. Criticized or lectured myself was the highest in total items of coping type. 4. In general characteristics, age(F=4.74, p<.01), marital status(t=2.67, p<.01), career (F=5.95, p<.01) were significantly related to level of ethical dilemma and religion(t=2.27, p<.05) was significantly related to types of coping. There was positive correlation between ethical dilemma and types of coping(r=.228, p<.01). On the basis of these findings, it is needed a correlation study according to category of ethical dilemma and coping types of nurses, and to develop the coping strategy that resolves ethical dilemma in nursing practice.

  • This study described a teacher's dilemma case caused by students' questions and an endeavor to resolve the dilemma. The teacher was faced with the dilemma of whether or not to give answers to the students' questions: Students' meaningful questions should be dealt in class. However, immediate answers for the questions would be difficult for the students to understand. In addition, offering text-based immediate answers would be criticized by a perspective on meaningful science education. Not only ignoring questions but also offering text-based answers could be the reason for a rupture between student and nature. And this made the teacher's dilemma. In this study, We try to address this dilemma and discuss why students should learn text with experience of nature in science class.

Students' Understanding and Application of Monty Hall Dilemma in Classroom (몬티홀 딜레마에 대한 학생들의 이해와 수업적용)

  • Although Monty Hall dilemma is used in many areas including philosophy, economics, and psychology, it is used in the current mathematics textbooks only as a material for reading or one of probability questions. The present study tries to explore students' understanding of Monty Hall dilemma through a class case. In this study, a group of high-school students participated in group activities, in which they read an argument about Monty Hall dilemma, and tried to resolve it through small-group and whole-class discussions, and then studied the conditional probability. The analysis supports the studies in psychology that intuitive understandings on probability do not change easily, and that counter-intuitivity in Monty Hall dilemma induces confusion and offers a basis for discussions among students. Similar results are anticipated when other dilemmas on probability are used.

  • In previous research of social dilemma, there is no extended game that the players can select one game out of some social dilemma games. We propose this kind of game as "Distributed Social Dilemma" In this game, each player tries to acquire the adaptive strategy throughout local interactions. We make use of GA as evolutionary operations. In this paper, our purpose is to examine how the game selection of players influences the evolution of cooperation in distributed social dilemma.   • We are evidently Home Economicus, egoistic rational utility maximiger, and all the capitalism economic situation make us adapt to such life, and recognize that it is rational to act like that. This can be demonstrated in Prisoner′s Dilemma(PD) which always select the non-cooperative choice for free rider in rational selection process of public goods. This paper notice the "what is problem\ulcorner"The problem is not in free rider itself but in free rider egoism. The practical behavior of free rider egoism can be explained by way of Prisoner′s Dilemma. In PD situation, the prisoner makes a rational choice, non-cooperative alternative, but he doesn′arrive at preto-optimality. It is dilemma. Why can′t he arrive \ulcorner Because he is isolated from other prisoner. So we call it prisoner′s dilemma. The PD situation can be compared with our real economic life, which, we think, have kept by rational choice of the public goods. We actually have made our life as an individual one although we organized communities of capitalism. Of course, we know each others as members of same society, but each individual being can′t secure the belief, which has composed basis of community. So, it is very similar and common between PD situation and our real economic life in the production of public goods. We conclude that this non-cooperative process of PD situation can be utilized as instrument of EE. So this non-cooperative process can show us the effectiveness of EE as follows. \circled1 Game situation life PD can be used as good instrument for explaining the rational selection dilemma(error) to Homo-Economicus, the rational agent, with the optimal and rational language. \circled2 We can show that the selection result is dilemma, not arrive pareto - optimality. \circled3 The dilemma can be resolved with accomplishing the good communal life based on the belief, not on the isolation.

Application to the Dilemma Discussion Program: Ethics and Character Education for Medical Students (의과대학 윤리·인성 교육을 위한 딜레마 토론의 활용)

  • The current medical practices in Korea have raised many new ethical issues. The current education system in medical colleges, however, is finding it difficult to cope with these rapidly arising medical issues. Many educators, therefore, became much more concerned about the importance of ethics and character education in medical colleges, but teaching methods or educational programs centered around the same have not yet been developed. Dilemma discussion is regarded as an available teaching method but is not frequently used in medical education. In this respect, this study aims to apply dilemma discussion programs to ethics and character education for medical students. It was discovered that dilemma discussion is an effective instructional method for enhancing the moral reasoning ability of medical students. According to $Rest^{\circ}{\phi}s$ theoretical framework, however, a dilemma discussion program focuses on two components of morality: moral judgment and moral sensitivity. Moral judgment and moral sensitivity are major components in predicting moral behaviors. Therefore, the target of dilemma discussion programs is to focus on these two components. It is reasonable to integrate moral judgment with moral sensitivity for ethics and character education in medical schools.

Triffin Dilemma and International Monetary System : Evidence from Pooled Mean Group Estimation

  • This study is motivated based on concern from some renowned scholars and central bankers whom have raised the issue of the sustainability of the International Monetary System (IMS). Using the panel data set of four major international currencies, USD, JPY, EUR and GBP from 1973 to 2013 with Pooled Mean Group (PMG) estimator, to re-examine whether Triffin dilemma still exists through investigating the relationship between the reserve share, current account balance and real effective exchange rate. The evidence from the result indicates that Triffin dilemma exists only in the long run, and shows that in the long-run, current account balance is proportionate to the increased real effective exchange rate while varies inversely with the reserve shares. However, the estimation for the short-run is not significant to prove the existence of Triffin dilemma. In addition, we investigated the non-dollar panel sample and found that the international monetary system still suffers from Triffin dilemma even without the dollar. To overcome Triffin dilemma, immediate step such as having currency swap mechanism is recommended. In medium term, a multi-polar Monetary System is suggested, and in the longer time, a supranational currency will be used to replace all the currencies in the world.

A Study on Resolving Prisoner's Dilemma Using Incentives and Penalties (인센티브 및 패널티를 적용한 죄수의 딜레마 해소 방안에 관한 연구)

  • This paper considers the Prisoner's Dilemma Game in which there exists a dilemma that the best response is that both players are to confess, but doing not confess can give a higher gain to the both players in a social perspective. To resolve such a dilemma in the game, an incentive model to encourage to confess and a penalty model for being imposed when not confessing are introduced, respectively. Then, the conditions are characterized under which incentive or penalty involved in the game's payoffs can make the game rational without a dilemma on both the personal and social perspectives, by taking the payoff values as variables with the incentive and penalty factors. Furthermore, it turns out that the resulting values of incentive and penalty are inversely proportional to each other, and thus, obtaining one of these amounts can provide the other. Simple examples are shown to interpret the theoretical verifications of our models, and randomly generated data based simulation results investigate the tendency of incentive and penalty and the resulting game values for a variety of instances. These results can provide a framework on resolving the dilemma by artificially putting incentive or penalty, although it is careful to apply more generalized real world games.

Ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists (일부 임상치과위생사의 윤리적 딜레마와 관련 요인)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the level of ethical dilemma and related factors in some clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 290 clinical dental hygienists in G metropolitan city from January 5 to February 27, 2015. The instruments used for this study were the modified ethical dilemma scale developed Lee, Kim and Park. The questionnaire consisted of dental hygienists & subjects(4 items), dental hygienists & professionals(12 items), dental hygienists & partners(7 items), and medical information(31 items). The questions were measured by Likert 5 points scale. The statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, t-test and stepwise multiple regression analysis using SPSS 12.0 program. Results: Dental hygienists perceived ethical dilemma scored 3.35 and 3.24 except medical information. Professionals and partners in sub-domain of ethical dilemma by experience of ethics education and ethical conflict were high and showed statistically significant difference. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and subjects was job satisfaction. The strongest predictor of dental hygienists and partners was adequacy of ethics education in college/university. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that it is necessary to develop the professional dental hygiene program for the prevention of ethical dilemma in dental hygienists and to make ethics education for ethical decision making.
