  • Electrolytic reduction technology is essential for the purpose of adopting pyroprocessing into spent oxide fuel as an alternative option in a back-end fuel cycle. Spent fuel consists of various metal oxides, and each metal oxide releases an oxygen element depending on its chemical characteristic during the electrolytic reduction process. In the present work, an electrolytic reduction behavior was estimated for voloxidized spent fuel based on the assumption that each metal-oxygen system is independent and behaves as an ideal solid solution. The electrolytic reduction was considered as a combination of a Li recovery and chemical reactions between the metal oxides such as uranium oxide and the produced Li metal. The calculated result revealed that most of the metal oxides were reduced by the process. It was evaluated that a reduced fraction of lanthanide oxides increased with a decreasing $Li_2O$ concentration. However, most of the lanthanides were expected to be stable in their oxide forms. In addition, a semi-empirical model for describing $U_3O_8$ electrolytic reduction behavior was proposed by considering Li diffusion and a chemical reaction between $U_3O_8$ and Li. Experimental data was used to determine model parameters and, then, the model was applied to calculate the reduction yield with time and to estimate the required time for a 99.9% reduction.

  • To predict the absorption behavior of carbon dioxide on membrane contactor, an aqueous potassium carbonate solution as an absorbent. The reversible reactions of carbon dioxide with chemicals were considered, and the physicochemical properties of reaction rate constants, equilibrium constants, solubilities and diffusion coefficients were used as a function of concentration of carbon dioxide and the temperature. A non-wetted mode was also used as an operating condition of the membrane contactor. In these operation conditions, the effect of the following system parameters were studied : the concentration of potassium carbonate, the velocity of the absorbent and the pressure of the mixture gas. The absorption behavior of carbon dioxide caused by a facilitated transport was observed as the increment of the concentration of the absorbent. The absorption rate of carbon dioxide was increased as the absorbent velocity was increased. Furthermore, it was found that the pressure if the mixture gas and the reuse number of absorbent affect severely the absorption rate of carbon dioxide. The absorption behavior was successfully predicted by the computer simulation using the system parameters which are important for design and operation of the membrane contactor.

  • In order to characterize the influence of the reaction-site density on the cathodic polarization property of LSCF, we chose the porosity of LSCF as a main controlling variable, which is supposed to be closely related with active sites for the cathode reaction. To control the porosity of cathodes, we changed the mixing ratio of fine and coarse LSCF powders. The porosity and pore perimeter of cathodes were quantitatively analyzed by image analysis. The electrochemical half cell test for the cathodic polarization was performed via 3-probe AC-impedance spectroscopy. According to the investigation, the reduction of oxygen at LSCF cathode was mainly controlled by following two rate determining steps; i) surface diffusion and/or ionic conduction of ionized oxygen through bulk LSCF phase, ii) charge transfer of oxygen ion at cathode/electrolyte interface. Moreover, the overall cathode polarization was diminished as the cathode porosity increased due to the increase of the active reaction sites in cathode layer.

  • Heterogeneously-catalyzed oxidation of aqueous phase trichloroethylene (TCE) over supported metal oxides has been conducted to establish an approach to eliminate ppm levels of organic compounds in water. A continuous flow reactor system was designed to effect predominant reaction parameters in determining catalytic activity of the catalysts for wet TCE decomposition as a model reaction. 5 wt.% $CoO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst exhibited a transient period in activity vs. on-stream time behavior, suggesting that the surface structure of the $CoO_x$ might be altered with on-stream hours; regardless, it is probable to be the most promising catalyst. Not only could the bare support be inactive for the wet decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, but no TCE removal also occurred by the process of adsorption on $TiO_2$ surface. The catalytic activity was independent of all particle sizes used, thereby representing no mass transfer limitation in intraparticle diffusion. Very low TCE conversion appeared for $TiO_2$-supported $NiO_x$ and $CrO_x$ catalysts. Wet oxidation performance of supported Cu and Fe catalysts, obtained through an incipient wetness and ion exchange technique, was dependent primarily on the kinds of the metal oxides, in addition to the acidic solid supports and the preparation routes. 5 wt.% $FeO_x/TiO_2$ catalyst gave no activity in the oxidation reaction at $36^{\circ}C$, while 1.2 wt.% Fe-MFI was active for the wet decomposition depending on time on-stream. The noticeable difference in activity of the both catalysts suggests that the Fe oxidation states involved to catalytic redox cycle during the course of reaction play a significant role in catalyzing the wet decomposition as well as in maintaining the time on-stream activity. Based on the results of different $CoO_x$ loadings and reaction temperatures for the decomposition reaction at $36^{\circ}C$ with $CoO_x/TiO_2$, the catalyst possessed an optimal $CoO_x$ amount at which higher reaction temperatures facilitated the catalytic TCE conversion. Small amounts of the active ingredient could be dissolved by acidic leaching but such a process gave no appreciable activity loss of the $CoO_x$ catalyst.

  • Hot dip aluminizing (HDA) is widely used in industry for improving corrosion resistance of material. The formation of intermetallic compound layers during the contact between dissimilar materials at high temperature is common phenomenon. Generally, intermetallic compound layers of $Fe_2Al_5$ and $FeAl_3$ are formed at the Al alloy and Fe substrate interface. In case of cast iron, high contact angle of graphite existed in the matrix inhibits the formation of intermetallic compound layer, which carry with it the disadvantage of a reduced reaction area and mechanical properties. In present work, the process for the removal of graphite existed on the surface of specimen has been investigated. And also HDA was proceeded at $800^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes in aluminum alloy melt. The efficiency of graphite removal was increased with the reduction of particle size in sanding process. Graphite appears to be present both in the region of melting followed by re-solidification and in the intermetallic compound layer, which could be attributed to the fact that the surface of cast iron is melted down by the formation of low melting point phase with the diffusion of Al and Si to the cast iron. Intermetallic compound layer consisted of $Fe(Al,Si)_3$ and $Fe_2Al_5Si$, the layer formed at cast iron side contained lower amount of Si.

  • Silicon nitride ($Si_3N_4$) ceramics have been considered for various components of nuclear power plants such as the mechanical seal of a reactor coolant pump (RCP), the guide roller for a control rod drive mechanism (CRDM), and a seal support, etc. Corrosion behavior of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature and high-pressure water must be elucidated before they can be considered as components for nuclear power plants. In this study, the corrosion behaviors of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics containing MgO and $Al_2O_3$ as sintering aids were investigated at a hydrothermal condition ($300^{\circ}C$, 9.0 MPa) in pure water and 35 ppm LiOH solution. The corrosion reactions were controlled by a diffusion of the reactive species and/or products through the corroded layer. The grain-boundary phase was preferentially corroded in pure water whereas the $Si_3N_4$ grain seemed to be corroded at a similar rate to the grain-boundary phase in LiOH solution. Flexural strengths of the $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were significantly degraded due to the corrosion reaction. Results of this study imply that a variation of the sintering aids and/or a control (e.g., crystallization) of the grain-boundary phase are necessary to increase the corrosion resistance of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics in a high-temperature water.

  • $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ membranes were fabricated by solid-state reaction. We investigated sintering behavior and oxygen permeation flux as a function of time-on-stream, temperature and upstream oxygen partial pressure. The oxygen was permeated at temperatures form 750$^{\circ}$C to 950$^{\circ}$C by mixed conducting through oxygen vacancy diffusion in the dense membrane. The oxygen permeation flux through the membrane were about 0.1ml/$cm^3{\cdot}$min at 850$^{\circ}$C. A constant time was required for reaching stable oxygen flux, and oxygen partial pressure affected the oxygen permeation fluxes.

  • Size controlled, $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ cathode powders were prepared by co-precipitation method followed by heat treatment at temperatures between 750 and $850^{\circ}C$. The synthesized samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical performance. The synthesized $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ after calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ has a good electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of $190mAhg^{-1}$ and good capacity retention of 100% after 30 cycles at 0.1C ($17mAg^{-1}$). The capacity retention of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ after calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ is better than that at 800 and $850^{\circ}C$ without capacity loss at various high C rates. This is ascribed to the minimized cation disorder, a higher conductivity, and higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient ($D_{Li}$) observed in this material. In the differential scanning calorimetry DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by calcined at high temperature, and this decrease is especially at $850^{\circ}C$. This behavior implies that the high temperature calcinations of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ prevent phase transitions with the release of oxygen.

  • Porous alginate-based hydrogel beads (porous ABH) have been prepared through a facile and sustainable template-assisted method using nano-calcium carbonate and nano-$CaCO_3$ as pore-directing agent for the efficient capture of methylene blue (MB). The materials were characterized by various techniques. The sorption capacities of ABH towards MB were compared with pure sodium alginate (ABH-1:0) in batch and fixed-bed column adsorption studies. The obtained adsorbent (ABH-1:3) has a higher BET surface area and a smaller average pore diameter. The maximum adsorption capacity of ABH-1:3 obtained from Langmuir model was as high as $1,426.0mg\;g^{-1}$. The kinetics strictly followed pseudo-second order rate equation and the adsorption reaction was effectively facilitated, approximately 50 minutes to achieve adsorption equilibrium, which was significantly shorter than that of ABH-1:0. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption was spontaneous and exothermic. Thomas model fitted well with the breakthrough curves and could describe the dynamic behavior of the column. More significantly, the uptake capacity of ABH-1:3 was still higher than 75% of the maximum adsorption capacity even after ten cycles, indicating that this novel adsorbent can be a promising adsorptive material for removal of MB from aqueous solution under batch and continuous systems.

  • To improve the performance of carbon nanofibers as electrode material in electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), we prepare three types of samples with different pore control by electrospinning. The speciments display different surface structures, melting behavior, and electrochemical performance according to the process. Carbon nanofibers with two complex treatment processes show improved performance over the other samples. The mesoporous carbon nanofibers (sample C), which have the optimal conditions, have a high sepecific surface area of $696m^2g^{-1}$, a high average pore diameter of 6.28 nm, and a high mesopore volume ratio of 87.1%. In addition, the electrochemical properties have a high specific capacitance of $110.1F\;g^{-1}$ at a current density of $0.1A\;g^{-1}$ and an excellent cycling stability of 84.8% after 3,000 cycles at a current density of $0.1A\;g^{-1}$. Thus, we explain the improved electrochemical performance by the higher reaction area due to an increased surface area and a faster diffusion path due to the increased volume fraction of the mesopores. Consequently, the mesoporous carbon nanofibers are demonstrated to be a very promising material for use as electrode materials of high-performance EDLCs.
