Statement of problem: Titanium and its alloy, with their excellent bio-compatibility and above average resistance to corrosion, have been widely used in the field of dentistry. However, the excessive oxidization of titanium which occurs during the process of firing on porcelain makes the bonding of titanium and porcelain more difficult than that of the conventional metal-porcelain bonding. To solve this problem related to titanium-porcelain bonding, several methods which modify the surfaces, coat the surfaces of titanium with various pure metals and ceramics, to enable the porcelain adhesive by limiting the diffusion of oxygen and forming the adhesive oxides surfaces, have been investigated. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know whether the titanium-porcelain bonding strength could be enhanced by treating the titanium surface with gold and TiN followed by fabrication of clinically applicable porcelain-fused-to-titanium crown Material and method: The porcelain-fused-to-titanium crown was fabricated after sandblasting the surface of the casting titanium coping with $Al_2O_3$ and treating the surface with gold and TiN coating followed by condensation and firing of ultra-low fusing porcelain. To compare with porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns, porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns were fabricated and used as control groups. The bonding strengths of porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns and porcelain-fused-totitanium crowns were set for comparison when the porcelain was fractured on purpose to get the experimental value of fracture strength. Then, the surface were examined by SEM and each fracturing pattern were compared with each other Result:Those results are as follows. 1. The highest value of fracture strength of porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns was in the order of group with gold coating, group with TiN coating, group with $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting. No statistically significant difference was found among the three (P>.05). 2. The porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns showed the highest value in bonding strength. The bonding strength of crowns porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns of rest groups showed bonding strength reaching only 85%-94% of that of PFG, though simple comparision seemed unacceptable due to the difference in materials used. 3. The fracturing patterns between metal and porcelain showed mixed type of failure behavior including cohesive failure and adhesive failure as a similar patterns by examination with the naked eye and SEM. But porcelain-fused-to-gold crowns showed high incidence of adhesive failure and porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns showed high incidence of cohesive failure. Conclusion: Above results proved that when fabricating porcelain-fused-to-titanium crowns, treating casting titanium surface with gold or TiN was able to enhance the bonding strength between titanium and porcelain. Mean value of masticatory force was found to showed clinically acceptable values in porcelain bonding strength in all three groups. However, more experimental studies and evaluations should be done in order to get better porcelain bonding strength and various surface coating methods that can be applied on titanium surface with ease.
In past, dye diffusion and dyeing rate in fibers have been emphasized in dyeing phenomena. However, in the light of the properties of colloids in the surface of disperse phase and dispersion, there exist specific characters such as adsorption or electric double layer, which seems to play important roles in determining the physiochemical properties in the dyeing system. Electrostatic bonding, hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals adsorption are common in dyeing as well as covalent bonding. Particularly, electrostatic bonding is premised on the existance of ionic radicals in fibers. The present study was aimed to clarify the electrokinetic phenomena of dyeing through the role of electric double layer by ion in amphoteric fibers with different ionic effects under different pH. Spectrophotometric analysis method was used to compare dyeing condition of surface, which can be detected by electrokinetic phenomena and the inner of fibers after deceleration of dyed fibers. Nylon and wool, the typical amphoteric fibers were dyed with monoazo acid dyes such as C.I. Acid Orange 20, and C.I. Acid Orange 10. Various combinations were prepared by combining pH, temperature and dye concentration, in order to generate streaming electric potential which were measured by microvolt meter and specific conductivity meter. The results were transformed to zeta potential by Helmholtz-Smoluchowski formular and to surface electric charge density by Suzawa formular, surface dye amount, and effective surface area of fibers. The amount of dyes of inner fibers were also measured by the Lambert-Beer’s law. The main results obtained are as follows. 1. By measuring zeta pontential, it was possible to detect the dyeing mechanism, surface charge density, surface dye amount and effective surface area concerning dye adsorption of the amphoteric fibers. 2. Zeta pontential increases in negative at low pH and high dye concentration in the process of dyeing. This implied that there existed ionic bond formation in the dyeing mechanism between acid dyes and amphoteric fibers. 3. Dibasic acid dye had little changing rate in zeta potential due to the difference in solubility of dye and in number of dissociated ions per dye molecule to bond with amino radicals of amphoteric fibers. The dye adsorption of mono basic acid dye was higher than that of dibasic acid dye. 4. The effective surface areas concerning dyeing were $6.3E+05\;cm^2/g$ in nylon, $1.6E+07\;cm^2/g$ in wool fiber being higher order of wool then nylon.
A modified silicon direct bonding method has been developed alloying an intimate contact between grooved and smooth mirror-polished oxide-free silicon wafers. A regular set of grooves was formed during preparation of heavily doped $p^+$-type grid network by oxide-masking und boron diffusion. Void-free bonded interfaces with filing of the grooves were observed by x-ray diffraction topography, infrared, optical. and scanning electron microscope techniques. The presence of regularly formed grooves in bending plane results in the substantial decrease of dislocation over large areas near the interface. Moreover two strongly misoriented waters could be successfully bonded by new technique. Diodes with bonded a pn-junction yielded a value of the ideality factor n about 1.5 and the uniform distribution of series resistance over the whole area of horded pn-structure. The suitability of the modified technique was confirmed by I - V characteristics of power diodes and reversly switched-on dynistor(RSD) with a working area about $12cm^2$. Both devices demonstrated breakdown voltages close to the calculation values.
Thermal CVD method is in general used for the fabrication of TiC/$Al_2O_3$-coated carbide tools. The growth of TiC layer and the coating morphology depended on the chemical composition of the hard metal substrate on which the tool properties were strongly influenced. TiC-coated layer was grown by the diffusion of carbon from the substrate, whereas the growth of $Al_2O_3$ layer was unrelated to the composition of substrate. In the nitride hard coatings of Zr, Nb and Mo metals deposited on high speed steel substrate by magnetron sputtering, the reactivity of the metal elements was decreased with increasing group number in one period of the periodic system. The hard material films exhibited the highest adhesion with the chemical composition of stoichiometry or substoichiometry. The critical load as a measure of adhesion was evaluated using scratch tester. The CVD tools indicated the values of 80 and 40N in the coated layers with proper bonding to the substrate and with $\eta$ phase of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ in the interface respectively, but the nitride films prepared by sputtering of PVD showed only the values between 10 and 20N.
For understanding molecular mechanisms of photochemical reactions, in particular reactions of proteins with biological functions, it is important to elucidate both the initial reactions from the photoexcited states and the series of subsequent chemical reactions, e.g., conformation, intermolecular interactions (hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interactions), and inter-protein interactions (oligomer formation, dissociation reactions). Although time-resolved detection of such dynamics is essential, these dynamics have been very difficult to track by traditional spectroscopic techniques. Here, relatively new approaches for probing the dynamics of protein photochemical reactions using time-resolved transient grating (TG) are reviewed. By using this method, a variety of spectrally silent dynamics can be detected and such data provide a valuable description about the reaction scheme. Herein, a blue light sensor protein TePixD is the exemplar. The initial photochemistry for TePixD occurs around the chromophore and is detected readily by light absorption, but subsequent reactions are spectrally silent. The TG experiments revealed conformational changes and changes in inter-protein interactions, which are essential for TePixD function. The TG experiments also showed the importance of fluctuations of the intermediates as the driving force of the reaction. This technique is complementary to optical absorption detection methods. The TG signal contains a variety of unique information, which is difficult to obtain by other methods. The advantages and methods for signal analyses are described in detail in this review.
A novel method was proposed to grow an epitaxial $CoSi_2$ on (100)Si substrate. A $CoN_x$ interlayer was deposited by reactive sputtering of Co in an Ar+$N_2$ flow. From the Ti/Co/$CoN_x$/Si structure, a uniform and thin $CoSi_2$ layer was epitaxially grown on (100)Si by annealing above $700^{\circ}C$. Two amorphous layers were found at the $CoN_x$/Si interface, where the top layer has a silicon nitride (Si-N) bonding state with some Co content and the bottom layer has a Co-Si intermixing state. The SiNx amorphous layer seems to play a critical role of suppressing the diffusion of Co into Si substrate for the direct formation of epitaxial $CoSi_2$.

Recently, cable conductors composed of numerous coated conductors have been developed to transport huge current for large-scale applications, for example accelerators and fusion reactors. Various cable conductors such as CORC (Conductor on round core), Roebel Cable, and TSTC (Twisted stacked tape cable) have been designed and tested to apply for large-scale applications. But, these cable conductors cannot improve the engineering critical current density (Je) because they are made by simple stacking of coated conductors. In this study, multi-HTS (High temperature superconductor) layers on one substrate (MHOS) wire was fabricated to increase the engineering critical current density by using the exfoliation of superconducting layer from substrate and silver diffusion bonding method. By the repetition of these processes, the 10 m long 6-layer MHOS conductor was successfully fabricated without any intermediate layers like buffer or solder. 6-layer MHOS conductor exhibited a high critical current of 2,460A/12mm-w. and high engineering critical current density of 1,367A/mm2 at liquid nitrogen temperature.
In this study, the photo-deposition method was used to introduce Ag onto the surface of TiO2 to synthesize an Ag-TiO2 composite. The effects of the varying amounts of AgNO3 precursor and annealing time periods on the Ag content in the composites, as well as their antibacterial characteristics under visible light conditions were studied. SEM analysis revealed the spherical morphology of the Ag-TiO2 composite. Compared with TiO2, the Ag particles were too small to be observed. An XPS analysis of the Ag-TiO2 surface confirmed the Ag content and showed the peak intensities for elements such as Ag, Ti, O, C, and Si. The highest Ag content was observed when 33.3 wt.% of AgNO3 and an annealing time of 6 h were employed; this was the optimum annealing time for Ti-Ag-O bonding, in that the lowest number of O bonds and the highest number of Ag bonds were confirmed by XPS analysis. Superior antibacterial properties against Bacillus and Escherichia coli, in addition to the widest inhibition zones were exhibited by the Ag-TiO2 composite with an increased Ag content in a disk diffusion test, the bacterial reduction rate against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli being 99.9%.
The reaction layer formed at interface between matrix and fiber has significant effects on the mechanical properties and behaviors of deformation m FRM. In this study, the mechanical properties and interfacial behaviors according to surface finishing on the fibers and according to heat treatment in FRM were investigated. FRM was fibricated by diffusion bonding method. In W/Al alloy composite and W/Al composite, W of which was coated with $WO_3$, the heat treatment was carried out thermal cycling method from 373K to 673K. In W/Al composite, W of which was coated with $WO_3$, growth of interface layer was hardly occured in spite of the increasing various thermal cycles. It was exhibited that oxidized W/Al composite were higher strength than non-oxidezed W/Al composite with the increasing thermal cycles. The compounds of fiber/matrix interface were analyzed into $WAl_{12}$, $WAl_7$, and $AlWO_3$, respectivly. Therefore the interfacial compounds of fiber/matrix seriously affected the mechanical properties and behaviors of deformation in FRM.
