A Model for Diffusion and Dissolution Controlled Drug Release from Dispersed Polymeric Matrix (고분자 분산 매트릭스로부터의 약물방출에 관한 확산 및 용출 제어 모델)

  • A numerical model for diffusion and dissolution controlled transport from dispersed matrix is presented. The rate controlling process for transport is considered to be diffusion of drug through a concentration gradient coupled with time-dependent surface change and/or disappearance of the dispersed drug in response to the dissolution. The transport behavior of drug was explained in terms of ${\nu}$ parameter: ${\nu}$ value means a ratio of diffusion time constant and dissolution time constant. This general model has wide range of application from where release is controlled by the diffusion rate to where release is governed by the dissolution rate. Based on this model, theoretical drug concentration, particle size distributions in the polymer matrix system and the resulting release rate were also investigated.

Revisiting the Definitions and the Textbook Descriptions of Dissolution, Diffusion and Effusion (용해, 확산, 분출의 정의와 교과서 서술에 대한 재고찰)

  • Previous studies showed that many secondary school students and teachers have difficulties in distinguishing the phenomena of dissolution and diffusion, as well as the phenomena of diffusion and effusion. In this study, currently accepted term definitions of dissolution, diffusion and effusion were searched from the IUPAC Gold Book and the physical chemistry textbooks, and the points to differentiate the definitions were sought. Also, the term definitions of these three phenomena in the secondary school text books and the college general chemistry textbooks were surveyed and compared to the currently accepted definitions. It was found that dissolution is formation of one new phase from mixing two phases, while diffusion is the migration of matter down from the concentration gradient. The "concentration gradient" is considered to be a key point to distinguish diffusion from the dissolution. However, the concentration gradient was not mentioned in the definitions of diffusion in most of the secondary school textbooks and the college general chemistry textbooks. Effusion is differentiated from diffusion by the gas molecules escaping from the container through a tiny hole without collision. The definition of effusion was not found in most of the secondary school textbooks.

  • Time-dependent behavior similar to secondary deformation related to mineral dissolution is easily observed when performing a laboratory pressure experiment. In this research, to observe the dissolution of quartz found in bentonite used as buffer material for the geological disposal of high-level waste (HLW) under conditions of high pH, we calculated the diffusion of $OH^-$ ions and the behavior of quartz dissolution using the homogenization analysis method. The results reveal that the rate of quartz dissolution is proportional to the temperature and interlayer water thickness. In particular, in a high-pH environment, the reacted area (and therefore the dissolution rate) increases with decreasing interlayer water thickness.

  • A biopharmaceutics drug classification system for correlation between in vitro dissolution and in vivo bioavailability is proposed based on recognizing that drug dissolution and gastrointestinal permeability are the fundamental parameters controlling the rate and extent of drug absorption. The objective of this study was to assess whether in vitro dissolution profiles of immediate-release beta-blocker tablets can be correlated with intestinal membrane permeability and/or in vivo bioavailability In vitro dissolution of the beta-blocker tablets was examined using KP VII Apparatus II methods at various pH. Intestinal membrane permeability was determined in vitro using the diffusion chamber method. Bioavailablity parameters were cited from literatures. The dissolution profiles did not accurately represent the in vivo bioavailablity However there were good correlations between intestinal membrane permeability and log P (noctanol/buffer). The correlations obtained in this study indicated that in vitro diffusion chamber method could be used to predict intestinal absorption in vivo.

Secondary School Science Teachers' Perceptions about the MixingPhenomenon Related to Dissolution and Diffusion (용해와확산에 관련된 혼합 현상에 대한 중등 과학교사들의 사고 특성)

  • The aim of this study was to research the characteristics of science teachers' thinking related to dissolution and diffusion. For this study, five science teachers who majored in chemistry or chemistry education were selected and interviewed. These teachers have been teaching on average for 2$\sim$6 years. From the study, it was discovered that the science teachers didn't recognize the necessity of sorting out diffusion from dissolution. The teachers divided in various mixing phenomena with diverse criteria. The science teachers had difficulty in sorting out diffusion from dissolution based on solubility and Gibbs' energy. The teachers didn't see the linkage between the contents that were divided into chapters, and didn't find omitted contents themselves in the chapters that introduced applicable principles. During the interviews, the teachers felt the need to understand the principles for understanding phenomena. But they did not have the ability to teach these principles after learning about the principles themselves. Therefore, it is necessary to develop teacher education programs, as well as a science curriculum, that helps in linking the knowledge between natural phenomena and principles.

  • Dissolution reactions of chemical grade zinc sulfide and natural sphalerite were studied in ferric chloride solution as an oxidant. To enhance the leaching reaction, ultrasonic technique was employed in this investigation. For the reaction with pure zinc sulfide, chemical reaction was the rate limiting step in the range of low conversion irrespective of applying ultrasonic wave. And the diffusion through liquid film instead of diffusion through product layer of free sulfur was the rate determining step because ultrasonic vibration removes the product from reaction zone. In the case of sphalerite with the ultrasonic vibrator, it was found that inert mineral layer diffusion was the rate determining step, in which the elemental sulfurs formed were removed by the ultrasonic action. Experimental results showed that the ultrasonic technique proved to be the methods which can significants improve the leaching performance.

  • In this study we analysed 3-12 grade science textbooks, many literatures and internet sites related to diffusion and dissolution concepts. From these data, we discovered that the explanations of diffusion that used in textbooks are not considered the site of collision with mediums, and confused with dissolution, state transition and effusion. In the case of dissolution, almost analysis data were short of the explanations of interaction effect. Most of all, the focus of dissolution explanations was to solve the calculation problems rather than to understand the concept. Every internet site was poor, just as the level of showing textbook contents with computer, so the only effect of using computer was the sense of sight and hearing. Chemistry must be understood nature phenomena with a view point of particle theory, but many textbooks and Internet sites didn't represent it sufficiently. We set up the correct scientific concept and linked micro world of particle theory with macro world of nature phenomena. With a use of computer which have the advantage of representing moving things, we developed the computer-assisted instruction programs related to diffusion and dissolution with the viewpoint of particle movement.

A Study of High School Students' Conceptions of Mixing Phenomena Related to Dissolution and Diffusion (용해.확산과 관련된 혼합현상에 대한 고등학생들의 개념 유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of conceptions of mixing phenomena related to dissolution and diffusion in high school students. The subjects of the investigation consisted of 108 students who took chemistry I course at 11th grade and 29 students who took chemistry II course at 12th grade. For this study, it was found that the many students had the alternative conception that chalk didn't dissolve in water because chalk was a nonpolar material. Most of the students understood the phenomena which carbon tetrachloride and water will not mix as the attraction conception. But many of the other students understood the phenomenon as characteristic of the materials such as difference of density. Many of the students understood the phenomenon of mixing ethanol and water constantly as ‘Attraction conception'. The phenomenon which is mixed ink and water was just accepted by the most students as the spreading of ink in water without understanding the reason of mixing. The phenomena of mixing iodine and carbon tetrachloride was understood as ‘Space conception' or ‘Attraction conception'. It could be inferred that the diverse alternative conceptions related to dissolution and diffusion phenomena were generated by the absence of entropy concept. Therefore, the explanations of science textbooks related to dissolution and diffusion phenomena need to change for students to understand them correctly.

Effect of Bonding Temperature and Heating Rate on Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding of Ni-Base Superalloy (니켈기 초내열 합금의 천이액상확산접합 특성에 미치는 접합 온도 및 가열 속도의 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of bonding temperature and heating rate on transient liquid phase diffusion bonding of Ni-base superalloy. The heating rate was varied by $0.1^{\circ}C$/sec, $1^{\circ}C$/sec, $10^{\circ}C$/sec to the bonding temperatures $1100^{\circ}C,\;1150^{\circ}C,\;1200^{\circ}C$ under vacuum. As bonding temperature increased, maximum dissolution width of base metal increased, but a dissolution finishing time decreased. The eutectic width of insert metal in the bonded interlayer decreased linearly in proportion to the square root of holding time during isothermal solidification stage. The bonding temperature was raised, isothermal solidification rate slightly increased. As the heating rate decreased and the bonding temperature increased, the completion time of dissolution after reaching bonding temperature decreased. When the heating rate was very slow, the solidification proceeded before reaching bonding temperature and the time required for the completion of isothermal solidification became reduced.

  • A long term deactivation study was carried out with commercial MEA provided by Hyundai Motor Co. The deactivation phenomena were observed only at high voltage region where there is no diffusion-limited reaction. A rapid deactivation was observed up to 40h owing to the sintering of Pt particles. This was followed a gradual increase in the activity up to 300 h, which is probably caused by improvement in the electrode properties in the presence of current during the reaction. After 300 h, monotonic decrease in the activity was observed owing to dissolution of Pt particles especially in the cathode. The presence oxygen is the cause of oxidation and dissolution of Pt. The dissolution rate can be somewhat retarded by generation of current, which reduces Pt ion back to Pt in the cathode.
