  • Recently, the method based on fractional order partial differential equation has been used in image processing. Usually, the optional order of fractional differentiation is determined by a lot of experiments. In this paper, a denoising model is proposed based on adaptive fractional order anisotropic diffusion. In the proposed model, the complexity of the local image texture is reflected by the local variance, and the order of the fractional differentiation is determined adaptively. In the process of the adaptive fractional order model, the discrete Fourier transform is applied to compute the fractional order difference as well as the dynamic evolution process. Experimental results show that the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index measurement (SSIM) of the proposed image denoising algorithm is better than that of other some algorithms. The proposed algorithm not only can keep the detailed image information and edge information, but also obtain a good visual effect.

  • In this contribution, the control of multivariable reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plant using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers is presented. First, feed-forward compensators are designed using simplified decoupling method and then the PID controllers are tuned for flux (flow-rate) and conductivity (salinity). The tuning of PID controllers is accomplished by minimization of the integral of squared error (ISE). The ISEs are minimized using a recently proposed algorithm named as teacher-learner-based-optimization (TLBO). TLBO algorithm is used due to being simple and being free from algorithm-specific parameters. A comparative analysis is carried out to prove the supremacy of TLBO algorithm over other state-of-art algorithms like particle swarm optimization (PSO), artificial bee colony (ABC) and differential evolution (DE). The simulation results and comparisons show that the purposed method performs better in terms of performance and can successfully be applied for tuning of PID controllers for RO desalination plants.

  • This paper describes an adaptive hybrid evolutionary firefly algorithm for a topology optimization of truss structures. The truss topology optimization problems begins with a ground structure which is composed of all possible nodes and members. The optimization process aims to find the optimum layout of the truss members. The hybrid metaheuristics are then used to minimize the objective functions subjected to static or dynamic constraints. Several numerical examples are examined for the validity of the present method. The performance results are compared with those of other metaheuristic algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a receiver structure for frequency synchronization in OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) system which is considered as 3GPP LTE(Long Term Evolution) downlink. In general, OFDMA frequency synchronization consists of two parts: coarse synchronization and fine synchronization. We consider P-SCH (Primary-Synchronization Channel) and CP (Cyclic Prefix) of OFDMA symbol for coarse synchronization and fine synchronization, respectively. The P-SCH signal has two remarkable disadvantages that it does not have sufficiently many sub-carriers and its differential correlation characteristic is not good due to ZC (Zadoff Chu) sequence-specific property. Hence, conventional frequency synchronization algorithms cannot obtain satisfactory performance gain. In this paper, we propose a modified differential correlation algorithm to improve performance of the coarse frequency synchronization. Also, we introduce an effective PLL (Phase Locked Loop) structure to guarantee stable performance of the fine frequency synchronization. Simulation results verify that the proposed algorithm has superior performance to the conventional algorithms and the 2nd-order PLL is effective to track the fine frequency offset even in high mobility.

  • This article explores how multi-objective optimization techniques can be used to design cost-effective and structurally optimal spatial steel structures, highlighting that optimizing performance can be as important as minimizing costs in real-world engineering problems. The study includes the minimization of maximum horizontal displacement, the maximization of the first natural frequency of vibration, the maximization of the critical load factor concerning the first global buckling mode of the structure, and weight minimization as the objectives. Additionally, it outlines a systematic approach to selecting the best design by employing four different evolutionary algorithms based on differential evolution and a multi-criteria decision-making methodology. The paper's contribution lies in its comprehensive consideration of multiple conflicting objectives and its novel approach to simultaneous consideration of bracing system, column orientation, and commercial profiles as design variables.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic melody composition system that can generate a sophisticated melody by adding non-harmony tone in the given chord progression. An overall procedure consists of two steps, which are the rhythm generation and melody generation parts. In the rhythm generation part, we designed new fitness functions for rhythm that can be controlled by a user setting parameters. In the melody generation part, we designed new fitness functions for melody based on harmony theory. We also designed evolutionary operators that are conducted by considering a musical context to improve computational efficiency. In the experiments, we compared four metaheuristics to optimize the rhythm fitness functions: Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Elitism Genetic Algorithm (EGA), Differential Evolution (DE), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Furthermore, we compared proposed genetic algorithm for melody with the four algorithms for verifying performance. In addition, composition results are introduced and analyzed with respect to musical correctness.

  • A simple damper optimization method is proposed to find optimal damper allocation for shear buildings under both target added damping ratio and interstorey drift ratio (IDR). The damping coefficients of added dampers are considered as design variables. The cost, which is defined as the sum of damping coefficient of added dampers, is minimized under a target added damping ratio and the upper and the lower constraint of the design variables. In the first stage of proposed algorithm, Simulated Annealing, Nelder Mead and Differential Evolution numerical algorithms are used to solve the proposed optimization problem. The candidate optimal design obtained in the first stage is tested in terms of the IDRs using linear time history analyses for a design earthquake in the second stage. If all IDRs are below the allowable level, iteration of the algorithm is stopped; otherwise, the iteration continues increasing the target damping ratio. By this way, a structural response IDR is also taken into consideration using a snap-back test. In this study, the effects of the selection of upper limit for added dampers, the storey mass distribution and the storey stiffness distribution are all investigated in terms of damper distributions, cost function, added damping ratio and IDRs for 6-storey shear building models. The results of the proposed method are compared with two existing methods in the literature. Optimal designs are also compared with uniform designs according to both IDRs and added damping ratios. The numerical results show that the proposed damper optimization method is easy to apply and is efficient to find optimal damper distribution for a target damping ratio and allowable IDR value.
