The selected carrier systems of reinforced concrete frame buildings are quite important on structural damages. In this study are examined comparatively nonlinear behaviours of reinforced concrete frames which having different stiffening members under a horizontal load. In that respect, the study consists of six parametric models. With this purpose, nonlinear structural analyses of reinforced concrete frames which having different stiffening members were carried out with LUSAS which uses the finite element method. Thus, some conclusions and recommendations to mitigate the damage of reinforced concrete buildings in the future designs are aimed to present. The obtained results revealed that in terms of performance, the x-shaped diagonal elements can be used as an option to shear walls. In addition, it was found that frame-2, frame-3 and frame-4 showed a better performance than traditional frame system (frame-1).
The purpose of this study is to investigate the linear earthquake behavior of the frame structures including subsoil with different stiffening members and to compare the results of each frame considered. These comparisons are made separately for displacement, bending moments and axial forces for frames with different storey and bay numbers for the time history and the modal analyses. The results of both methods are also compared. The results of the frames with subsoil are also compared with the results of the frames without subsoil. It is concluded that all stiffening members considered in this study decrease the lateral displacement of the frame and the bending moment of the columns and increase the axial force in the columns and that configuration of the bracing members come out to be an important parameter in braced frames since the frames with the same type of bracing give different results depending on configuration. It is also concluded that, in general, the absolute maximum displacements of the frames modeled with subsoil are larger than those of the frames modeled without subsoil.

The tension stiffening in reinforced concrete member means increase of stiffness caused by the effective tensile stress between cracks and the tension softening behavior of concrete. This paper presents on the tensile behavior and tension stiffening of RC tension members. Direct tension tests were performed with a main experimental variables such as concrete strength, rebar diameter and strength. The tension stiffening was analyzed from the load-displacement relationship and was compared with ACI code, CEB model and the proposed by Collins & Mitchell. The results are as follows : The tension behaviors of RC members were quite different from those of bare bar and were characterized by loading and concrete cracking steps. The effect of tension stiffening decreased rapidly as the rebar diameter and strength increased, and the concrete strength increased. The proposed by Collins & Mitchell described well the experimental results, regardless of rebar types and concrete. But, ACI code and CEB model described a little differently, depending on the types. The effect of tension stiffening in RC member was the biggest near at concrete cracking step and decreased gradually to the bare bar's behavior as loading closed to the breaking point. Thus, tension stiffening in RC members should be taken into account when the load-deflection characteristics of a member are required or a precise analysis near the load of concrete clacking is needed.
This paper presents evaluation results of the tensile behavior of reinforced high strength concrete. The effects of different sizes of reinforcing bar, ranging from D22 to D29, on the formation of cracks was investigated. Two different strength concretes, $270kg/cm^2$ and $550kg/cm^2$, were used in the specimens to investigate the influence if concrete strength on tension stiffening. In the present investigation a method was developed to obtain reliable load-deformation behavior in tension. The experimental results show that (1)high-strength concrete members exhibited larger amounts of tension stiffening than the companion normal-strength concrete members, (2) as the bar diameter increases, the beneficial influence of high-strength concrete on tension stiffening is reduced.
Presence of torsional loadings can significantly affect the flow of internal forces and deformation capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) columns. It increases the possibility of brittle shear failure leading to catastrophic collapse of structural members. This necessitates accurate prediction of the torsional behaviour of RC members for their safe design. However, a review of previously published studies indicates that the torsional behaviour of RC members has not been studied in as much depth as the behaviour under flexure and shear in spite of its frequent occurrence in bridge columns. Very few analytical models are available to predict the response of RC members under torsional loads. Softened truss model (STM) developed in the University of Houston is one of them, which is widely used for this purpose. The present study shows that STM prediction is not sufficiently accurate particularly in the post cracking region when compared to test results. An improved analytical model for RC square columns subjected to torsion with and without axial compression is developed. Since concrete is weak in tension, its contribution to torsional capacity of RC members was neglected in the original STM. The present investigation revealed that, disregard to tensile strength of concrete is the main reason behind the discrepancies in the STM predictions. The existing STM is extended in this paper to include the effect of tension stiffening for better prediction of behaviour of square RC columns under torsion. Three different tension stiffening models comprising a linear, a quadratic and an exponential relationship have been considered in this study. The predictions of these models are validated through comparison with test data on local and global behaviour. It was observed that tension stiffening has significant influence on torsional behaviour of square RC members. The exponential and parabolic tension stiffening models were found to yield the most accurate predictions.
This paper describes the results obtained from 11 direct tension tests to explore the influence of concrete strength on tension stiffening behavior in reinforced concrete axial members. Three different concrete compressive strengths, 250, 650, and 900kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$, were included as a main variable, while the ratio of cover thickness-to-rebar diameter was kept constant to be 2.62 to prevent from splitting cracking. As the results, it was appeared that, as higher concrete strength was used, less tension stiffening effect was resulted, and the residual deformation upon unloading was larger. In addition, the spacing between adjacent transverse cracks became smaller with higher concrete strength. The major cause for those results may be attributed to the fact that nonuniform bond stress concentration at both loaded ends and crack sections becomes severer as higher concrete is used, thereby local bond failure becomes more susceptible. From these findings, it would be said the increase in flexural stiffness resulting from using high-strength concrete will be much smaller than that predicted by the conventional knowledge. Finally, a factor accunting for concrete strength was introduced to take account for the effect of HSC on tension stiffening. This proposed equation predicts well the tension stiffening for the effect of HSC on tension stiffening. This proposed equation predicts well the tension stiffening behavior of these tests.

Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) has high compressive and tensile strengths due to the particle packing, and its ductile behavior can be ensured by utilizing steel fibers. However, since the UHPC members exhibit different characteristics of crack behavior and tensile behavior from normal concrete, the tension stiffening and cracking characteristics of the UHPC should be accurately modeled for the design and analysis of the UHPC members. In this study, uniaxial tension tests was conducted on the UHPC members with strands, where the test variables were diameter and reinforcing ratio of strands. Detailed analyses were also conducted to identify the tensile characteristics and crack behavior of the UHPC members. By comparing the test results with current code provisions and other models proposed by existing researchers, their applicability for estimation of crack behavior of the UHPC members was examined.
The investigation of corrosion effects on the tensile behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members is very important in region prone to high corrosion conditions. In this article, an experimental study concerning corrosion effects on tensile behavior of RC members is presented. For this purpose, a comprehensive experimental program including 58 cylindrical reinforced concrete specimens under various levels of corrosion is conducted. Some of the specimens (44) are located in large tub containing water and salt (5% salt solution); an electrical supplier has been utilized for the accelerated corrosion program. Afterwards, the tensile behavior of the specimens was studied by means of the direct tension tests. For each specimen, the tension stiffening curve is plotted, and their behavior at various load levels is investigated. Average crack spacing, loss of cross-section area due to corrosion, the concrete contribution to the tensile response for different strain levels, and maximum bond stress developed at each corrosion level are studied, and their appropriate relationships are proposed. The main parameters considered in this investigation are: degree of corrosion ($C_w$), reinforcement diameter (d), reinforcement ratio (${\rho}$), clear concrete cover (c), ratio of clear concrete cover to rebar diameter (c/d), and ratio of rebar diameter to reinforcement percentage ($d/{\rho}$).

This paper presents the tension stiffening behavior from experimental results of each 6 amorphous steel fibers and normal steel fibers reinforced direct tensile specimens with the main variables such as cover thickness to bar diameter ratio. A tension stiffening effect for steel fiber reinforced RC tension members improve on the increase in cover thickness, and also amorphous steel fiber is usually superior to normal steel fiber. The reinforcement of steel fibers controlled the splitting cracks and led to significant increase in the tension stiffening effect. In particular, if cover thickness is more than twice the bar diameter, the amorphous steel fiber reinforced specimen is controlled the splitting crack and increased the tension stiffening effect. And, the tension stiffening effect of amorphous steel fiber reinforced concrete tension members is different to current structural design code provision.

Until recently tensile stresses in concrete have not been considered, since it does not affect the ultimate strength of reinforced concrete flexural members significantly. However, to verify the load-deflection relationship, the effect of tensile stresses between reinforcing bars and concrete, so-called tension stiffening effect must be taken into account. Main parameters of the tension stiffening behavior are known as concrete strength, and bond between concrete and reinforcing bars. In this study a total of twenty specimen subject to bending was tested with different concrete strength, coverage, and de-bonding length of longitudinal bars. The effects of these parameters on the flexural rigidity, crack initiation and propagation were carefully checked and analyzed.
