  • Microbump formation during CO$_2$ laser texturing of glass substrates is examined in this paper. Experimental results show that different bump shapes (dome-shaped, with a central dimple, and with a peripheral rim) are generated depending on the laser fluence. A theoretical model for the process is suggested based on thermoelastic behavior but limited only to the dome-shaped bump. The dimensions (maximum height and base area) of the bump shows a logarithmic dependence on laser fluence as expected from the theory. Numerical computation reveals that the effect of thermal diffusion is not negligible for relatively long laser pulses.

  • When the ICM is fired in the artillery weapon, it is necessary to determine rounds of munitions for sufficient damage to targets of different sizes and shapes. This paper analyzes all kinds of delivery errors involved in ICM firing, and then develops the target coverage model appropriate for ICM salvos. This model is evaluated through computer simulation. The expected target coverage is measured according to number of salvos, range and probable error, velocity error, battery arrangement, target size, and shell reliability respectively.

  • Fatigue life estimation by the theoretical stress concentration factors are, in general, considerably different from test results. And in calculating stress concentration factor, it is very difficult to consider actual geometry and material property which are the notch shapes, imperfections or defects of materials such as porosities inclusions and casting defects, etc. Therefore, the paper deals with the experimental method to find out the more exact stress concentration factors by measuring the strain distributions on each specimen by 3D-ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) System. Then the fatigue lives are compared between theoretical calculations using stress concentration factors determined by 3D-ESPI system and fatigue test results

  • This paper proposes the algorithm of the feature extraction, making polyline- shape according to extracted points and similarity test on the object represented by contour. The control points which can make approximate curve are extracted as features of the object. Experiments show that this algorithm is a effective method for identification between different shapes.

  • Leaf architectural studies have been made in 15 genera and 25 species belonging to 6 tribes of the Asteraceae. Major venation pattern conforms to pinnate craspedodromous (simple and semi), pinnate camptodromous with festooned brochidodromous secondaries, acrodromous and actinodromous. Qualitative leaf features and numerical data regarding the venation pattern are charted. Areoles of different sizes and shapes are observed. Tracheids occur either solitary or in groups. Grouped tracheids are either uniseriate, biseriate or multiseriate. Isolated free vein endings are observed in Centratherum phyllolaenum. Bundle sheath is prominent in Xanthium strumarium. Secretory cavities are observed in the lamina of Tricholepis amplexicaulis.

  • This tests examined bond stress-slip relationship of V-ties embedded into concrete as a supplementary lateral reinforcement proposed for ductility of concrete flexural members. The different leg shapes of V-ties were prepared as a test parameter. The V-tie with pressed end-legs exhibited 28% higher bond strength than the conventional V-ties, whereas bond stress-slip curves were insignificantly affected by the embedment length of V-ties.

  • Through different projects, CETIM and its scientific and industrial partners have evaluated the potential of the High Velocityy Compaction Technology in terms of materials and component shape. Various kinds of powder materials were studied: metals, ceramics and polymers. The HVC process was used with success to manufacture gears, large parts and multilevel components. Due to the high density of HVC parts, the green machining process enables shapes to be produced that would otherwise be impossible to compact and components to be produced with very hard sintered and homogeneous materials.

  • This study explores aesthetics and materials used in domestic and international hanger designs from 1850 to 2003. At the second half of the nineteenth century, most hangers were handmade and made of wood and metal. At the first half of the twentieth century, such diverse materials as paper, plastics, and leather began to use other than such typical materials as wood and metal at the previous decades. However, from the second half of the twentieth century the use of different types of plastics led to artistic abnormal shapes within typical triangular types. Moreover, this study also examines hangers by its functions: primary, portable, and multi-functional types.

  • Systematic research of metal alkoxide electrophoretic deposition has been developed. The formation mechanism of electrophoretic deposits has been offered. The structure study of dry and heat-treated electrophoretic deposits has been established. The concrete examples of one and bi-component oxide thin film formation were considered. The new approaches for thin film technology have developed on various substrates of different shapes and sizes. The correlation between thin film structure, mechanism of their formation, and physico-chemical properties has been determined.
