  • When a ship propeller having wing type sections rotates at high speed underwater, local pressure on the blade decreases and various types of the cavitation inevitably occur where the local pressure falls below the vapor pressure. Fundamentally characteristics of the cavitation are determined by the shapes of the blade section and their operating conditions. Underwater noise radiated from a ship propeller is directly connected to the occurrence of the cavitation. In order to design low noise propeller, it is preferentially demanded to figure out key features: how the cavity is generated, developed and collapsed and how the effect of viscosity works in the process. In this study, we first perform inviscid analysis of the partial cavity generated on two dimensional hydrofoil. Secondly, viscous analysis using FLUENT with different turbulence and cavitation models are presented. Results from both approaches are also compared and estimated.

  • We have studied effects of annular phase apodizer and bump shapes on the read-out signal in an optical disc system, using scalar diffraction theory. In order to detennine the optimum parameters of annular phase apodizer which will minimize the influence of spherical aberration, we defined WR as the ratio between the maximum wavefront aberration and some absolute value of wavefront aberration at any position r in the pupil. A cylindric bump, a semi-conic bump and a conic bump were$.$ also considered as different types of bump shape. As the radius and shape of bump varies, the read-out signal from an optical disc system with an annular phase apodizer was similar to that from an optical disc system without apodizer. When spherical aberration increases, the maximum read-out signal of an optical disc system with an annular phase apodizer and minimum bump radii giving read-out signal higher than 0.6 rarely varied. Especially, the optimum parameters at $W_R$ = 0.4 , 0.6 gave the most compensated effect of a spherical aberration.ration.

  • Polyimide (PI) multilayer thin films were prepared by spin-coating from a poly(amic acid) (PAA) and poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS). PI was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) PAA. Different compositions of PAAS were prepared by incorporating triethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA PAA in dimethylacetamide. PI multilayer thin films were spin-coated from PMDA-ODA PAA and PAAS. The PAAS comprising cationic and anionic moieties were spherical with a particle size of $20{\sim}40\;nm$. Some particles showed layers with ammonium salts, despite poor ordering. Too much salt obstructed the interaction between the polymer chains and caused phase separation. A small amount of salt did not affect the interactions of the interlayer structure but did interrupt the stacking between chains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the average decomposition temperature of the thin films was $611^{\circ}C$. All the films showed almost single-step, thermal decomposition behavior. The nanostructure of the multilayer thin films was confirmed by X -ray reflectivity (XRR). The LF 43 film, which was prepared with a 4:3 molar ratio of PMDA and ODA, was comprised of uniformly spherical PAAS particles that influenced the nanostructure of the interlayer by increasing the interaction forces. This result was supported by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. It was concluded that the relationship between the uniformity of the PAAS particle shapes and the interaction between the layers affected the optical and thermal properties of PI layered films.

  • Membranes are used in most processes of biopharmaceutical production. It is used for pretreatment of other processes, separation of impurities in the process, virus removal, control of products concentration and buffer solution exchange. Virus filters play an important role in ensuring product efficacy and stability because viral contamination of biopharmaceuticals for humans is a sensitive issue that is directly related to serious clinical outcomes. Virus filters typically have complex multilayer structures made of various polymers such as surface-modified PVDF, PES, CRC. Depending on the manufacturer, filters have different pore structures and shapes, such as symmetric or asymmetric, and is used in the form of pleated membrane, flat sheets or hollow fibers. Virus filters are exclusively supplied by few foreign companies such as Asahi Kasei, Millipore, Pall and Sartorius. Replacing virus filters can be time consuming and expensive, including approval from regulatory agencies through validation. As localization has become important due to Japan's recent export regulations, it is necessary to increase the degree of technical independence.

  • This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the Joseon (the 15th to 17th century) potteries from Ssangyongdong Yongam site in Cheonan. The pottery samples of the kilns and the workshops (habitation) from the study area have grey or red color with similar matrix but various shapes and different hardness, according to firing temperature. All of the pottery and the workshop soils were very similar patterns with characteristics of occurrences, mineralogy and geochemical evolution trend. But soils from around the site does not correspond with them. So the workshop soil that the fine clay is raw clay for making pottery in Yongam site. Firing temperature of soft-type potteries were presumed to be formed around $900^{\circ}C$ based on phase transition of clay minerals and mica. Hard-type pottery, mullite was detected and plagioclase was not detected by X-ray diffraction analysis, which means that potteries had experienced firing between 1,000 to $1,100^{\circ}C$.

  • Some experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of freezing and thawing on the strength and strain characteristics of alluvial silty clay under the different temperatures, loading and moisture conditions. The results were as follows; 1. The soil used was proved to be consisted of silty clay with honey-combed structure, and showed higher dilatancy, frost activity and lower stability in natural state. 2. Soil treated with freezing and thawing cycles showed lower compressive strength compared with the non treated, The strength decreased with incement of freezing and thawing cycles. It's shapes of stress-strain curves were flat and did not formulate a peak while the peak strength of higher moisture content soil decreased with the increment of moisture content. It's decrement ratio was most distinctly shown at the first one cycle of freezing and thawing. 3. The cohesion decreased due to freezing and thawing cycles but internal frcition angle was not changed. 4. The liquid limit decreased with increment of freezing and thawing cycles, and became almost constant after three cycles of freezing and thawing. 5. The strength under simple loading at failure mode was appeared to be higher compared with the cyclic loading after freezing and thawing but initial moisture content effect was not observed. 6. Ice lense was not observed within 50% of ice content ratio but observed over 100%. The higher the ice content ratio, the higher the peak strength. As a matter of fact, it seems that an optimum ice content ratio exists for plastic mode and the least compressive strength.

  • The goal of this study was to evaluate sediment reduction effects of VFS (vegetative filter strip) applied for Iksan area in Saemangeum watershed. This study simulated runoff and sediment load from different types of uplands using VFSMOD-W. The general upland characteristics of the study area was investigated to build reasonable scenarios of the simulation. The simulation scenarios were designed by various areas, shapes, and slopes of uplands. Grass mixture was selected as VFS vegetation and the size of VFS was fixed as 10 % of uplands area. Additionally 50mm, 100mm, 150mm of daily rainfall were applied for the runoff and sediment simulation. As results, the calculated runoff and sediment loads were obtained $20.7{\sim}1,030.6m^3$ and 568.4~675,731.4 kg for the range of 0.1~1.0 ha of uplands with 7 % and 15 % slopes. The reduction effects on runoff and sediment were obtained 5~10 % and 21.0~47.7 % respectively from VFS applications. The VFSMOD-W simulations showed that runoff tended to increase as upland area and amount of rainfall increased while sediment increased when slope, length and area of uplands and amount of rainfall increased. These results indicated that rainfall amount and upland size are the critical factors for the generation of runoff and sediment load. In order to support this conclusion, further studies such as, long term monitoring, field experiments, and to calibrate and evaluate the model are necessary.

  • Using the numerical solution in the plane restricted problem of three bodies, abut 490 periodic orbits are computed numerically around the $L_5$ of Sun-Jupiter and about 1600 periodic orbits also be done around the $L_5$ of Sun-Jupiter system. But, in Earth-Moon system, the complex shapes and dents appear around the $L_5$ and periodic orbits intersect one another in the place where dents are shown. And there is a region that three different periodic orbits exist with the same period in this system. The increase of energy is in inverse proportion to that of period in the part of this region. The regions can exist around the $L_5$ of Sun-Jupiter system where periodic orbit can be unstable by perturbation of other force besides the gravitational force of Jupiter. These regions which is close to $L_5$ are a~5.12 AU. The Trojan asteroids that have a small eccentricity and inclination can not exist in this region.

  • It is of great importance to represent the directional ocean waves in a laboratory basin for hydraulic model tests. The directional ocean waves can be expressed as a linear superposition of a large number of component waves with different frequencies and propagating directions. The aim of the study is to check the wave generating characteristics by serpent-type wave generating system in PKNU (Pukyong National University) which is composed of 10 piston-type wave generators. In the experiment, spatial variation of irregular wave heights and propagating angles are measured in the multi-directional wave maker basin. Target wave directional spectrum is reproduced in the area of multi-directional wave maker basin. The directional spreading of the generated waves varied spacially in the basin. They differed from target spectrum as the measurement point becomes far from the center line normal to the generator face, The effective generation area where that target can be reproduced is limited to the triangular area attached the generator face. According to the results, it is emphasized that the effective experiment area in the basin considered wave generator characteristics should be determined in consideration of experimental conditions including structural shapes, water depth, wave directionality etc.
