This paper describes a volume of fluid(VOF) method, mRHRIC for the simulation of free surface flows around ship hulls and provides its validation against benchmark test cases. The VOF method is developed on the basis of RHRIC method developed by Park et al. that uses high resolution differencing schemes to algebraically preserve both the sharpness of interface and the boundedness of volume fraction. A finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations, while the realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for turbulence closure. The present numerical results of the resistance performance tests for DTMB5415 and KCS hull forms show a good agreement with available experimental data and those of other free surface methods.
The suitability of high-order accurate, central and upwind-biased compact difference schemes is evaluated for the large-eddy simulations of flows in complex geometry. Two flow geometries are considered: channel and circular cylinder. The effects of numerical dissipation and aliasing error on the evaluation of subgrid scale stress are investigated by extending the analysis by Ghosal (1) to centered and upwind compact schemes. It is shown that the failure of upwind schemes mainly comes from the aliasing error.
In this paper, an approach of automatically finding and modifying the most appropriate orthogonal array (GO) is suggested and applied to a new structural optimization procedure with two steps. GO is motivated by the situation where finding a proper orthogonal array from the tables in the literature is difficult or impossible. Now the Taguchi method is made available for various numbers of variables and levels. In the two-step structural optimization, the Taguchi method equipped with GO and a shape optimization using the finite differencing method is consecutively applied. The existence or non-existence of an element can be taken as a factor level and this feature is utilized finding the best topology from a set of potential topologies suggested from the user's expertise. This greatly enhances applicability and one can expect a better result than the case in which each step is applied independently because these steps are complementary each other.
This paper deals with a numerical study of flow-guider applied to controlling current in a bay. Two dimensional numerical model for tidal currents based on the depth averaged equation is developed and standard k-.epsilon. model is adopted to determine the turbulence diffusion. Equations are described in a generalized coordinate system to be implemented by non-staggered grid system and discretized by using finite volume method. Unsteady flow is simulated by fully implicit scheme. Hybrid scheme and central differencing are used to compute the convective terms and source terms, respectively. The tidal current in a rectangular bay is simulated and it gives satisfactory results. The realistic and distinct models of a large structure placed in bay are also exemplified with or without flow-guiders. The simulation results show that the flow-guider gives the residual tidal current in the bay by the different flux with respect to the direction of tidal current.
CMOS realization of VDTA (Voltage Differencing Transconductance Amplifier) - Gm and its application in the design of multifunctional filter is presented. Small signal analysis is also done to simplify and depict the realization method. Also the parameters and can be tuned by adjusting the circuit components. The performance of VDTA-Gm amplifier and the designed Band Pass filter are simulated using HSPICE with CMOS $0.18{\mu}m$ process parameters.
Convergence characteristics and efficiency of three implicit approximate factorization schemes(ADI, DDADI and MAF) are examined using 2-Dimensional compressible upwind Navier-Stokes code. Second-order CSCM(Conservative Supra Characteristic Method) upwind flux difference splitting method with Fromm scheme is used for the right-hand side residual evaluation, while generally first-order upwind differencing is used for the implicit operator on the left-hand side. Convergence studies are performed using an example of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at steady transonic flow condition, i. e. Mach number 0.8 at $1.25^{\circ}$ angle of attack. The results were compared with other computational results in order to validate the current numerical analysis. The results from the implicit AF algorithms were compared well in low surface with the other computational results; however, not well in upper surface. It might be due to lack of the grid around the shock position. Because the algorithm minimizes the errors of the approximate decomposition, the improved convergence rate with MAF were observed.
An unstructured implicit Euler solver is parallelized on a Cray T3E. Spatial discretization is accomplished by a cell-centered finite volume formulation using an unpwind flux differencing. Time is advanced by the Gauss-Seidel implicit scheme. Domain decomposition is accomplished by using the k-way N-partitioning method developed by Karypis. In order to analyze the parallel performance of the solver, flows over a 2-D NACA 0012 airfoil and a 3-D F-5 wing were investigated.
Numerical analysis were made for the unsteady flow fields of the rotor system of a Tilt-Rotor aircraft in cruise mode. The Reynolds-averaged thin-layer Wavier-Stokes equations were discretized by Roe's upwind differencing scheme and integrated in time by the LU-SGS algorithm. The computational domain of the rotor system was constructed by seven multi-block Chimera grids. Comparison of pressure coefficient on the surface of the main wing and blades were made for 3cases of advance ratio(0.325, 0.350, 0.375) and thrust and power coefficients for the rotor were compared with experimental data.
In this paper, numerical simulation of cavitation flow for modified NACA66 hydrofoil was made by using the multi-phase RANS equation based on pseudo-compressibility. The Homogeneous mixture model comprised of the mixture continuity, mixture momentum and liquid volume fraction equations was utilized. A vertex-centered finite-volume method was used in conjunction 2nd-order Roe's FDS to discretize the inviscid fluxes. The viscous fluxes were computed based on central differencing The Spalart-Allmaras one equation model was employed for the closure of turbulence. Reasonable agreements were obtained between the calculation results and the experiment for pressure coefficients on the hydrofoil surface.
Accurate simulation of free-surface wave flows around a ship is very important for better hull-form design. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, termed SNUFOAM, which is based on the open source libraries, OpenFOAM, was developed to predict the wave patterns around a ship. Additional anti-diffusion source term for minimizing a numerical diffusion, which was caused by convection differencing scheme, was considered in the volume-fraction transport equation. The influence of the anti-diffusion source term was tested by applying it to free-surface wave flow around the Wigley model ship. In results, the band width of the volume fraction contours between 0.1 to 0.9 at the hull surface was narrowed by considering the anti-diffusion term.
