매연여과장치 재생을 위한 커먼레일 디젤엔진의 연소 최적화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Combustion Optimization of a Common Rail Direct Injection Diesel Engine for Regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter)

  • Thermal regeneration means burning-off and cleaning-up the particulate matters piled up in DPF(diesel particulate filter), and it requires both high temperature $(550\~600^{\circ}C)$ and appropriate concentration of oxygen at DPF entrance. However, it is not easy to satisfy such conditions because of the low temperature window of the HSDI(high speed direct injection) diesel engine(approximately $200\~350^{\circ}C$ at cycle). Therefore, this study is focused on the method to raise temperature using the trade-off relation between temperature, oxygen concentration, and the influence of many parameters of common rail injection system including post injection. After performing an optimal mapping of the common rail parameters for regeneration mode, the actual cleaning process during regeneration mode is investigated and evaluated the availability of the regeneration mode mapping through regenerating soot trapped in the DPF.

  • Due to the complaints on the emission gases from diesel locomotives, the diesel locomotives are replaced by electric locomotives, resulting in the decrease of diesel locomotives in Korea. However, the emission gases from diesel locomotives have become serious environmental concern at stations and car depots. In this study, a diesel particluate filter (DPF) for diesel locomotive was developed in order to reduce the emission gases. The concentration of nano particulate matters before and after the DPF was analyzed using a SMPS (Scanning mobility particle sizer) and MOUDI (Micro orifice uniform deposited impactor) to evaluate the performance of DPF in particulate matters removal.

매연저감장치 손상에 기인한 차량화재 사고사례 분석 (Analysis on Vehicle Fires Caused by Damage of Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF))

  • 본 논문에서는 디젤 승용차량에서 매연저감장치 손상에 기인한 차량화재에 대하여 기술하였다. 디젤 차량에서는 배출가스에 포함되는 입자상 물질을 저감하기 위하여 매연저감장치를 배기계통에 설치하고 있다. 매연저감장치는 입자상 물질의 과다 포집, 재상과정에서의 오류 및 흡기계통 불량 등에 의해 재생과정에서 파손에 이르게 되며, 매연저감장치가 파손되는 경우, 고온의 배출가스가 분출되고, 차량 하부 배기계통의 주변 가연물을 통해 화재로 진전된다. 매연저감장치 손상에 의해 화재가 발생되는 경우, 배기계통 배관 및 머플러 부분에 규산염계 무기화합물이 부착되는 특징을 나타내며, 이 규산염계 무기화합물은 매연저감장치 내부 필터 재료인 세라믹 부분이 손상되는 과정에서 발생된다. 따라서 화재가 발생된 디젤 차량의 경우, 머플러 주변에서 규산염계 무기화합물이 식별되는 경우, 매연저감장치 손상에 기인한 화재로 추정할 수 있다.

  • Urgent increasing of the vehicles influence air pollution and the damage of the plants and animals. Particularly, exhaust-ing particulate of diesel vehicles give serious effect to human life. Therefore, this study aim to reduce amount of particulate and to contribute developing after-treatment in diesel engine. Through the experimental and theoretical study about charac-teristics of the electric heat regeneration, various results are obtained.

  • Combined technique of burner and DOC has been used for regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filter. Experiments has been performed to increase the temperature of engine exhaust gas to burn the collected soot in DPF at all conditions of operation of 3 liter diesel engine. Ignition temperature of soot can be successfully obtained by heats of burner flame and residual fuel oxidation at diesel oxidation catalyst even in the condition of oxygen deficiency. It is found that the load of air compressor and heat loss can be reduced to the level of practical application. It is also found that CO and THC emissions are not increase by additional combustion of regeneration burner.

금속 DPF를 이용한 입자상물질의 저감효율에 관한 연구 (PM Reduction Efficiency using Metal Type DPF)

  • After-treatment apparatus ceramic DPF (diesel particulate filter) have been applied to reduce harmful particulate matters(PM) among emissions from diesel engines so far, but they are easy to be fragile and weak in thermal shock. This research aims to investigate a metal type filter which is superior in mechanical strength and heat conduction rate and is beneficial economically in manufacturing. Basic performance of metal DPF such asloading test, temperature gradient test, thermal shock test, heat resistant test and back pressure was carried out. And then their experimental data provided key informations in designing and manufacturing such as detailed structures of metal mesh filter. Also diesel engine and vehicle of 2957cc displacement was tested under lug-down 3 mode and CVS-75 mode. PM reduction efficiency was 54.5% using metal DPF without loss of performance and fuel consumption.

  • Motor vehicle exhaust is the major cause to the air contamination in Seoul. It includes many toxic chemicals to human health such as aidehyde, PAHs, benzene, xylene, toluene, benzo[a]pyrene, nickel, arsenic and cadmium in gasoline exhaust and formaldehyde, PAHs, 1,3-butadiene, benzene and particulate matter in diesel exhaust. Some chemicals out of them are classified as a human carcinogen. Many large diesel vehicles such as buses and trucks are drivened frequently in Seoul so that the air in Seoul is seriously contaminated by diesel exhaust, especially particulate matter. The amounts of particulate matter from large diesel vehicles may be estimated to be more than 50% of small dust in Seoul. The particles of particulate matter are coated with many toxic chemicals and some of these are considered as a human carcinogen. The cancer risk has to be throughly managed because the population density of Seoul is very high. Government should list hazardous air pollutants in Seoul, assess the exposure of people to toxic pollutants, especially carcinogens and manage human health risk.

  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, 1989) has classified whole diesel exhaust as probably carcinogenic to humans. Diesel exhaust particulate matter (DPM) adsorbs different chemical substances including PAHs and nitroarenes. DPM is emphasized because it is a major component of diesel exhaust, it is suspected of contributing to a health hazard. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of carbon particles and associated organics and inorganics, and it is not known what fraction or combination of fractions cause the health effects [cancer effects, noncancer effects (respiratory tract irritation/inflammation and changes in lung function)] that have been observed with exposure to diesel exhaust. In order to identify which chemical classes are responsible for the majority of the observed biological activities, we performed a particular biological/chemical analysis. Respirable particulate matter (PM2.5: <2.5mm) was collected from diesel engine exhaust using a high-volume sampler equipped with a cascade impactor. Particulate oganic matter was extracted by the dichloromethane/sonication method and the crude extract was fractionated according to EPA recommended procedure into seven fractions by acid-base partitioning and silica gel column chromatography. We examined genotoxic potentials of diesel exhaust particulate matter using novel genotoxicity tests, which are rapid, simple and sensitive methods for assessing DNA-damage at the DNA and chromosomal level (comet assay, in vitro MN test and Ames test). Higher genotoxic potency was observed in non polar fractions and several PAHs were detected by GC-MS, such as 1,2,5,6 dibenzanthracene, chrysene, 1,2-benzanthracene, phenanthrene and fluoranthene.
