  • Heating by RF wave is divided into dielectric heating and induction heating. Dielectric heating and induction heating from outside the body have the compensatory heating pattern. While surface fat layer is heated by dielectric heating, it is not heated by induction heating. While the peripheral part at the middle of the electrodes is not heated by dielectric heating, it is heated by induction heating. By the simultaneous application both modalities, heating pattern seems to be more uniform and improved. Computer simulation of Finite Element Method (FEM) using ANSYS was conducted to dielectric heating with the results of above-mentioned feature. Theoretical considerations by the uniform RF magnetic field in a cylinder and textbooks support the feature of the above-mentioned heating pattern of induction heating. Further computer simulation of FEM using ANSYS will be conducted to simultaneous application of dielectric heating and induction heating to verify and will be reported.

  • Adsorption of toluene by activated carbon fiber (ACF) coated with dielectric heating element and desorption by applying microwave were investigated. In order to prepare adsorbent so that VOC can be desorbed by microwave heating, fine dielectric heating element with nano size was coated on the surface of the ACF using hybrid binder. Eight adsorbents (ACF-DHE, Activated Carbon Fiber coated with Dielectric Heating Element) were prepared with different amount of dielectric heating element, kinds of hybrid binder, and solvent. In order to investigate adsorption characteristics, BET surface area, pore volume, and average pore size were measured for each adsorbent including ACF. Breakthrough experiments with toluene concentration, flow rate, bed length using fixed bed reactor were performed to investigate adsorbality of adsorbent, and results were compared with that of the ACF. Desorption reactor was constructed with modified microwave oven to investigate heating effect on ACF-DHE by applying microwave power. Each adsorbent saturated with toluene were put into desorption reactor. Composition of desorbed gas generated by applying controlled microwave power to reactor was measured. Up to now, hot air desorption method has been used. Experimental results showed that desorption method with new adsorbent prepared by coating dielectric heating element on ACF can be used for industrial application.

  • Radio frequency and microwave dielectric heating are well-known electroheating methods, used in industrial applications where non electrically conducting materials are to be heated, dried or otherwise processed. The major reason for considering this technique for any process is based on its unique ability to transfer heat into the volume of an electrically non conducting material such as insulator directly, rather than, via a surface. Conventional heating must first bring heat to the product surface and there after it depends on the physical characteristics and condition of the material as to how effectively this heat is transmitted into the mass. The product would suffer surface damage before the main body is adequately processed. Dielectric heating is applied to enhance conventional heating methods and to drastically shorten the required processing duration. Although the use of dielectric heating has been a well proven technique for several years in some industries, its application in the preheating of FRP has been limited by the insufficient experience. In this paper a method is described for uniform radio frequency heating of preheating of FRP.

  • Effects of temperature coefficients fur dielectric constants on transient reflectances and thermal responses have been investigated for a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort pulse laser heating. Heating processes are simulated using the conventional conduction model(parabolic one-step, POS), the parabolic tow-step model(PTS), the hyperbolic two-step model(HTS). Results fro the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is considerably greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS and HTS models, however, result in completely different temperature profiles from those obtained by the POS model due to slow electron-lattice interactions compared to laser pulse duration. Transient reflectances are directly estimated from the linear relationship between electron temperature and complex dielectric constants, while conventional approaches assume that the change in reflectances is proportional to that in temperatuer. Reflectances at the front surface vary considerably for various dielectric constants, while those at the rear surface remain unchanged relatively.

  • This work studies the effects of transient reflectance on the thermal responses of a metal(gold) thin-film during ultrashort laser heating. The heating process is calculated using the conventional conduction model (parabolic one-step: POS), parabolic two-step model (PTS) with and without variable properties, hyperbolic two-step model (HTS). Results from the HTS model are very similar to those from the PTS model, since the laser heating time in this study is greater than the electron relaxation time. PTS model with variable properties, however, results in totally different temperature profiles compared to those from POS models or calculation with constant properties. Transient reflectances are estimated from electron temperature distributions and based on the linear relationship between the electron temperature and complex dielectric constants. Reflectance of the front surface can be changed with respect to dielectric constants, while those of the rear surface remain unchanged.

  • The glass frit has been used in transparent dielectric, barrier rib and electrode of PDP (Plasma display panel). In PDP fabrication, the firing temperature of glass frit is normally 550~$580^{\circ}C$ with conventional heating. However, there are a problem that silver in electrode is diffused throughout the transparent dielectric. For inhibiting the Ag diffusion we considered use of the microwave heating. We investigated firing of glass frit compared between conventional and microwave heating. After firing by two types of heating, the diffusion of silver is determined using a optical microscope and UV-spectrometer. Based on the our results, the microwave heating should be a candidate to heating source for high efficacy in PDP.

  • An asymmetric metal-semiconductor-metal Al0.24Ga0.76N ultraviolet (UV) sensor was fabricated, and the effects of local Joule heating were investigated. After dielectric breakdown, the current density under a reverse bias of 2.0 V was 1.1×10-9 A/cm2, significantly lower than 1.2×10-8 A/cm2 before dielectric breakdown; moreover, the Schottky behavior of the Ti/Al/Ni/Au electrode changed to ohmic behavior under forward bias. The UV-to-visible rejection ratio (UVRR) under a reverse bias of 7.0 V before dielectric breakdown was 87; however, this UVRR significantly increased to 578, in addition to providing highly reliable responsivity. Transmission electron microscopy revealed interdiffusion between adjacent layers, with nitrogen vacancies possibly formed owing to local Joule heating at the AlGaN/Ti/Al/Ni/Au interfaces. X-ray photoelectron microscopy results revealed decreases in the peak intensities of the O 1s binding energies associated with the Ga-O bond and OH-, which act as electron-trapping states on the AlGaN surface. The reduction in dark current owing to the proposed local heating method is expected to increase the sensing performance of UV optoelectronic integrated devices, such as active-pixel UV image sensors.

  • PTFE composites for use of microwave substrate were fabricated by impregnation and heat treatment fabrication with glass fabric. This study shows dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and loss can be controlled by thickness of PTFE composite with change of pressure condition in heating press process. The dielectric constant of the PTFE composites has decreasing tendency as given higher pressure condition. The dielectric loss has similar result too. Especially, the case of the dielectric loss was affected by the condition of pressure at heating press and had the best performance under 3 MPa. In order to see the reason why thickness conditions make different, their microstructures were also observed.

  • In this study, in order to develop low temperature sintering multilayer piezoelectric actuator, PMN-PNN-PZT system ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3-Bi_2O_3$-CuO as sintering aids and their piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated as a function of heating rate. At sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$, with increasing heating rate, electromechanical coupling factor(kp), mechanical quality factor(Qm) and dielectric constant $({\varepsilon}_r)$ were increased.
