Current design equations for shear strength of reinforced concrete columns generally overestimate the shear strength contribution by the circular transverse reinforcement. This is due to the simplification of the discrete distribution of the reinforcement to the continuous one and the imprudent application of the classical truss model to the circular section, which is different in shear-resisting mechanism from the rectangular section. This study presents a rational model for the prediction of shear strength contribution by the circular transverse reinforcement considering the starting location of a diagonal crack, the number of transverse reinforcing bars crossing the main crack and the geometrical strength component of the transverse resistance. It was found that, for lower amount transverse reinforcement, the crack starting point and the number of crack crossing bars greatly influence the shear-resisting capacity. Proposed model leads to a reliable design equation which is derived using a linear regression method and is in good agreement with the lower bound of exact strength curve.

Test results of four reinforced concrete two-span continuous deep beams are summarized. Main variables were the configuration of web opening reinforcement. Shear span-to-overall depth ratio and the size of the web opening were fixed by 1.0 and 0.5 a $\times$ 0.2 h, respectively. To control diagonal crack and enhance strength, it can be recommended that diagonal reinforcement crossing the crack plane joining between loading points and corner of openings should be provided.

This study is to investigate experimentally the shear capacity of high-strength lightweight-aggregate reinforced concrete beams subjected to monotonic loading. Ten beams made of fly-ash artificial lightweight high-strength concrete were tested to determine their diagonal cracking and ultimate shear capacities. The variables in the test program were longitudinal reinforcement ratio; which variabled (between 0.83 and 1.66 percent), shear span-to-depth ratio (a/d=1.5, 2.5 and 3.5), and web reinforcement(0, 0.137, 0.275 and 0.554 percent). Six of the test beams had no web reinforcement and the other six had web reinforcement along the entire length of the beam. Most of beams failed brittly by distinct diagonal shear crack, and have reserved shear strength due to the lack of additional resisting effect by aggregate interlocking action after diagonal cracking. Test results indicate that the ACI Building Code predictions of Eq. (11-3) and (11-5) for lightweight concretes are unconservative for beams with tensile steel ratio of 1.66, a/d ratios greater than 2.5 without web reinforcement. Through a more rational approach to compute the contribution of concrete to the shear capacity, a postcracking shear strength in concrete is observed.

Steel fiber-reinforced prestressed concrete (SFRPSC) members typically have high shear strength and deformation capability, compared to conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) members, due to the resistance provided by steel fibers at the crack surface after the onset of diagonal cracking. In this study, shear tests were conducted on the SFRPSC members with the test variables of concrete compressive strength, fiber volume fraction, and prestressing force level. Their localized behavior around the critical shear cracks was measured by a non-contact image-based displacement measurement system, and thus their shear deformation was thoroughly investigated. The tested SFRPSC members showed higher shear strengths as the concrete compressive strength or the level of prestress increased, and their stiffnesses did not change significantly, even after diagonal cracking due to the resistance of steel fibers. As the level of prestress increased, the shear deformation was contributed by the crack opening displacement more than the slip displacement. In addition, the local displacements around the shear crack progressed toward directions that differ from those expected by the principal strain angles that can be typically obtained from the average strains of the concrete element. Thus, this localized deformation characteristics around the shear cracks should be considered when measuring the local deformation of concrete elements near discrete cracks or when calculating the local stresses.
Investigations on the behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams subjected to predominant shear are accomplished to determine their diagonal shear strength including ultimate shear strength. The par¬ameters varied were the fiber volume fraction(Vf) of the steel-fibers and shear span to depth ratio(a/d).
The test result show that diagonal shear strength and ultimate shear strength are increased significantly due to crack arrest mechamsm. Predictive equations are suggested for evaluating the diagonal cracking strength and ultimate shear strength of the fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams.

This paper described the shear strengthening effect by deviator location in pre-damaged reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with externally post-tensioning steel rods. Three reinforced concrete beams as control beam and eight post-tensioned beams using external steel rods were tested to fail in shear. The externally post-tensioning material was a steel rod of 22 mm diameter, and it had a 655 MPa yield strength and an 805 MPa tensile strength. Specimens depend on multiple variables, such as the number of deviators, location of deviator, and load pattern. The pre-damaged loads up to about 2/3 of ultimate shear capacities were applied to specimens using displacement control and the diagonal shear crack just occurred at these loading levels. And then, the post-tensioning up to when a strain of steel rod reaches about $2000{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ was continuously applied to beam. A displacement control was changed to a load control during post-tensioning. The post-tensioning resulted in increase of load-carrying capacity and restoration of existing deflection. Also, it prevented the existing diagonal cracks from excessively growing. Two deviators effectively improved the load capacity when compared with in case of test which one deviator at mid-span installed. When deviators were located near region which the diagonal crack occurred on, the strengthening impact by post-tensioning was greater.

The present study proposes a simple equation to straightforwardly determine the potential plastic hinge length in boundary element of reinforced concrete shear walls. From the idealized curvature distribution along the shear wall length, a basic formula was derived as a function of yielding moment, maximum moment, and additional moment owing to diagonal tensile crack. Yielding moment and maximum moment capacities of shear wall were calculated on the basis of compatability of strain and equilibrium equation of internal forces. The development of a diagonal tensile crack at web was examined from the shear transfer capacity of concrete specified in ACI 318-11 provision and then the additional moment was calculated using the truss mechanism along the crack proposed by Park and Paulay. The moment capacities were simplified from an extensive parametric study; as a result, the equivalent plastic hinge length of shear walls could be formulated using indices of longitudinal tensile reinforcement at the boundary element, vertical reinforcement at web, and applied axial load. The proposed equation predicted accurately the measured plastic hinge length, providing that the mean and standard deviation of ratios between predictions and experiments are 1.019 and 0.102, respectively.

This Paper Presents a new model, called the “shear-friction truss model,” for slender reinforced concrete beams to derive a clear and simple equation for their ultimate shear strength. In this model, a portion of the shear strength is provided by shear reinforcement as in the traditional truss model, and the remainder by the shear-friction mechanism. Friction resistance is derived considering both geometrical configuration of the rough crack surface and material Properties. The inclined angle of diagonal strut in the traditional truss model is modified to satisfy the state of balanced failure, when both stirrups and longitudinal reinforcement yield simultaneously. The vertical component of friction resistance is added to the modified truss model to form the shear-friction truss model. Test results from published literatures are used to find the effective coefficient of concrete strength in resisting shear on inclined crack surfaces.

Steel fiber and polymer are used widely for reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellences of the durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shear behavior of polymer cement high strength concrete beams mixed with steel fiber. The compressive strength of concrete was based on the 100$\times$200 mm cylinder specimens. The compressive strength of concrete are 320$kgf/cm^2$, 436 $kgf/cm^2$ and 520 $kgf/cm^2$ in the 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns and fracture modes. Also, load-strain and load-deflection examined. During the test cracks were sketched against the load values according to the growth of crack. result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens are increased in rigidity and durability with mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was similar a theory of shear-crack strength. (3) The deflection and strain at failure load of Polymer-steel fiber high strength concrete beams were increased, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete.

Investigations of low-rice unbounded reinforced concrete shear walls with or without openings are performed with comparison of analytical and experimental results. Theoretical analysis is based on nonlinear finite element algorithm, which incorporates concrete failure criterion and nonlinear constitutive relationships. Studios focus on the effects of height-to-length ratio of shear walls, opening ratio, horizontal and vertical reinforcement radios, and diagonal reinforcement. Analytical solutions conform well with experimental results. Equations for cracking, yielding and ultimate loads with corresponding lateral displacements are derived by regression using analytical results and experimental data. Also, failure modes of low-rise unbounded shear walls are theoretically investigated. An explanation of change in failure mode is ascertained by comparing analytical results and ACI code equations. Shear-flexural failure can be obtained with additional flexural reinforcement to increase a wall's capacity. This concept leads to a design method of reducing flexural reinforcement in low-rise bounded solid shear wall's. Avoidance of shear failure as well as less reinforcement congestion leer these walls is expected.
