Serotonin was chemically identified as 5-hydrowytryptamin which occurs in plants, animals, and human beings. The end product of metabolism was excreted as 5-HIAA in urine. Many scientists, specially biochemist and psychiatrist reported that the change of serotonin concentration caused mental disorder and pathological condiions such as schizophrenia and carcinoid. This study was carried out to observe the urinary 5-HIAA excretion rates changed by three recipes treatment (Kamisoyosan, Ondamtang, kalgunhaegitang) according to the classification of endogenous, exogenous and non-exo-endogenous, causes of disease. The urinary 5-HIAA excretion rates before and after three recipes treatment on normal groups divided into three groups on the basis of physical constitutional differences and on patients groups, divided into three groups according to the causal factor were measured. The results were as follows; 1. The urinary 5-HIAA volume of patients groups appeared non-exoendogenous, endogenous, exogenous causes of disease in order of three causative classification. 2. The urinary 5-HIAA volume of Normal groups was $2.50{\pm}088mg/24hrs$(range $0.30{\sim}6.90mg/24hrs$) 3. Thr urinary 5-HIAA volume was $3.70{\pm}0.89mg/24hrs$(range $0.90{\sim}6.50mg/24hrs$) before kamisoyosan treatment and $3.20{\pm}0.72mg/24hrs$ (range $0.80{\sim}6.20mg/24hrs$) after the treatment. 4. The value was $2.60{\pm}0.10mg/24hrs$ (range $0.60{\sim}6.50mg/24hrs$) before Ondamtange treatment and $2.00{\pm}0.12mg/24hrs$(range $0.20{\sim}6.10mg/24hrs$) after the treatment. 5. The value was $4.30{\pm}0.75mg/24hrs$(range $0.92{\sim}6.50mg/24hrs$) before kalgunhaegitang treatment and $3.10{\pm}0.10mg/24hrs$(range $0.80{\sim}5.80mg/24hrs$) after the treatment. Considering the above-mentioned the study on the changes of urinary 5-HIAA volume will make a significant contribution to the diagnosis and the evaluation of therapeutic effect successive research and modified application will be in need.
Objectives: Since Korean traditional medicine has an integrative perspective by its nature, the patients' psychological and physical problems in a Korean traditional clinic may be resolved through a more integrative approach. The purpose of this study was to describe the latent characteristics of psychological health of child outpatients and their parents visiting Korean traditional clinic with physical complaints and was to propose an alternative curriculum to meet their needs based on their psychological and physical aspects. Methods: Subjects studied consisted of 100 outpatients (59 boys, 41 girls, mean age 55 months, age range 18 to 83 months) and their parents. Behavior characteristics for children were measured by Korean version of Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 1.5-5 (CBCL1.5-5) while parenting stress, depression, and anxiety for parent were measured by Korean-Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (K-PSI-SF), Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), respectively. The data of subjects were compared to those of standardized groups and then were compared according to child's gender within sample. Results: Child participants were reported to have significantly higher scores of all CBCL 1.5-5 subscales than the standardized group. When compared, no differences of K-PSI-SF, CES-D, and STAI was found between parents of participants and the standardized groups. However, parents of child participants with at-risk psychological problems showed significantly higher scores of all parenting stress subscales than those of all child participants. In addition, the mothers of boy participants demonstrated significantly higher anxiety, depression and parenting stress than those of girl participants irrespective of psychological severity. Conclusions: We discussed the implication of these results in clinical situation and make recommendations for curriculum of psychiatry and pediatrics with the aim of improving proper diagnosis, consulting and treatment.
Wanghogo(王好古) is a prominent doctor in Geum-Won(金元) Dynasty. He is also the inheritor of Jangwonso(張元素) and Igo(李杲) in study, and studied "Hwangjenaegyeong(黃帝內經)", "Sanghallon(傷寒論)". So, he contributed to a later age. Although we have some researches of Wanghogo, but the researches in his books are insufficient as yet. More, the publication year of his books have some different views, so I tried to study this. By this study, We can understand that Wanghogo published "Uiruwonyung(醫壘元戎)" which is for exogenous febrile disease and miscellaneous diseases in general plan of twelve meridians in 1297, "Eumjeung-yangnye(陰證略例)" which is for harm and diagnosis and treatment of Eum syndromes of exogenous febrile disease in 1303, and "Tang-aekboncho(湯液本草)" which is for property and flavor and meridian tropism of Herb and five kind of flavor's tonification and reduction, the meaning of prescription, care of health by food, "Chasananji(此事難知)" which is for meridian, Jangbu(臟腑), pathology, pathogen, clinical distinction, medical care in 1308.
This study aims to evaluate healthcare providers' satisfaction and demands pertaining to the collaborative first-stage pilot project between Korean medicine and Western medicine. This survey was conducted via electronic mail among 33 healthcare providers participating in the pilot project. Likert type 5-point scale or Likert type 7-point scale was used to evaluate each item. The response of '${\geq}4$' on the 5-point scale, and '${\geq}5$' on the 7-point scale were analyzed as positive answers. A total of 27 healthcare providers (81.8%) responded, of which 9 were western medical doctors (33.3%) and 18 were Korean medical doctors (66.7%). In respect to satisfaction of the pilot project, 88.9% gave positive responses on improved patients' convenience, 59.3% on treatment efficiency and 55.6% on diagnosis efficiency. In terms of self-evaluation on the pilot project, 70.4% gave positive answers on changes in quality of collaborative treatment, 74.1% on cooperation of results, 63.0% on cooperation of structure and 51.9% on cooperation of process. In terms of demand for collaborative treatment or the pilot project, 'standardized manual' and 'simplification of administrative procedures' showed highest demand, resulting up to 88.9%, followed by 85.2% demanding more public relations and 63.9% demanding enlargement of participating hospitals. This survey revealed that healthcare providers are generally satisfied with patients' convenience and treatment effects. Further studies are needed to develop a standardized manual, simplified administrative procedures, and expanded pilot project contents.

Objectives: This study investigates the impact of M&L psychotherapy on an adolescent with anxiety disorders transitioning into adulthood, using a retrospective mixed-method approach. Methods: An adolescent with Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-5-diagnosed anxiety disorders underwent combined treatment with M&L psychotherapy and complex Korean medicine therapy over a period of approximately two years. Patient records tracked the diagnosis, treatments, and progress. In-depth interviews were also conducted. The study used a convergent parallel mixed-method approach, integrating quantitative analysis from psychological assessments, including the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-X), the Core Seven Emotions Inventory-short form (CSEI-s), and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2), with qualitative analyses of traditional Korean medicine counseling session notes, interviews, and other qualitative psychological assessments. Results: State anxiety decreased from 40 to 36, and trait anxiety decreased from 42 to 34. MMPI-2 L scale scores decreased slightly to 64T, whereas S scale scores increased to 62T, and FRS scores decreased to 70T from an initial score of 78T. Qualitative analysis revealed an increase in the MMPI-2 Es scale, identified as "subjectivity." Joy (喜) emerged as the highest emotional profile score in the CSEI-S. Scores for anger (怒), thought (思), fear (恐), and fright (驚) decreased, indicating improved negative emotions. Qualitatively, expressions of determination to "move forward" and "strengthen the mind" were noted, suggesting enhanced "lower danjeon (下丹田)." Conclusions: Integrating traditional Korean medicine treatment with M&L psychotherapy for a vulnerable adolescent with anxiety disorders demonstrated efficacy. Further research is warranted to substantiate the effectiveness of M&L psychotherapy and advocate for its wider adoption in mainstream practice.
