Purpose: This study aimed to systematically review the contents and effectiveness of education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcer among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Korea. Methods: Six electronic databases were searched using search terms, and 748 articles were identified. Ten articles were eligible based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Article quality was evaluated using a critical evaluation checklist for manuscripts before performing the systematic review. Results: Although education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcers have been continuously studied for 20 years, the number of studies is small, and to our knowledge, there have been no studies reporting on the subsequent prevalence of foot ulcers or amputations. While the effect of these education programs on knowledge (ES=1.23) and self-management behavior (ES=.96) was shown to be statistically significant, it was not shown to be significant in preventing diabetic foot ulcers (ES=.03). Conclusion: The actual preventive effect on the prevalence of foot ulcers, through education programs for preventing diabetic foot ulcer could not be determined. Our findings highlight a potential need for studies aimed at developing effective programs to improve education on preventing diabetic foot ulcers.
This study examined the effect of Health Education on the aged. One of the Study objectives was to improve knowledge. attitude and self-care practice about diabetes of the aged who have responded positive in the urine sugar test. The other study objective was to find out factors influencing knowledge. attitude and self-care practice about diabetes. and the relationship among the three variables. The subjects, consisting of 45 positive responders in the urine sugar test, were selected from the elderly who attend elderly citizen center in southern part of Seoul Then they were divided into an experimental and a control group. The study design was set to compare the pre and post test data between the experimental and the control group with the measures of results from Health Education services including nursing care intervention programs on the aged diabetics. The first data collection was carried out in August. 1986 through questionaires and urine sugar testing. The second data collection was done in September, 1987 through the same methods. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1. General characteristics of the subjects The experimental group has 9 females and 14 males and the control group has 12 females and 10 males. As for the educational level, more than half of the subjects in both group had completed at least 6 years of education. And there was no significant difference in urine sugar levels between the two groups. 2. The effect of Health Education on the extent of change in knowledge, attitude and self-care practice about diabetes was found to be significant. The first hypothesis that knowledge, attitude and self-care practice about diabetes in the aged will be unchanged by Health Education. was rejected by increased the three variables and decreased urine suger level in the experimental group. The second hypothesis that knowledge, attitude and self-care practice about diabetes wouldn't be concerned with each other, was rejected. That is. the three variables and urine sugar levels showed a significant positive relationship with each other but diabetic knowledge to urine sugar level had an insignificant positive relationship. The third hypothesis that the amount of learning Health Education will have no relationships with knowledge. attitude and self-care practice about diabetes. was rejected. That is, the more number of times an elderly person participated in Health Education. they increased their diabetic knowledge. attitude and self-care practice and decreased their urine sugar level. 3. Except for Health Education, an other factor influencing diabetic knowledge was educational level. And an other factor influencing the diabetic attitude was experience of the diagnosis of diabetes. 4. Except for Health Education. the other factors influencing self-care practice were experience of the diagnasis of diabetes, sex and experience of the hospitalization for diabetes. But factors influencing urine sugar level weren't found. Although the results seem to be plausible, this study is not without its problems. In paticular, the sample used is limited in its scope and size. So, more empirical work needs to be done for other diseases as well as diabetes before any general conclusions are to be made.
The purpose of this study is to identify health problems and health behaviors of the middle-aged residing in urban areas and to plan and implement health promotion programs based on their health needs. The subjects' age ranged from 30-64 years in 1.040 middle-aged residing in an area of Kangbook-ku in Seoul. The data were collected from September 1998 to February 1999 with structured questionnaire using face-to-face or telephone interviews. The data were analyzed by SPSS-PC+ and identified by $X^2$ test and ANOVA. The results were as follows: 1. 35.4% of the males and 27.8% of the female responded that they were healthy regarding their perceived health status. In the order of chronic illness prevalence in the case of males was hypertension, diabetes, and digestive disorders and. in the case of females, was digestive disorders, hypertension, arthritis, anemia, and diabetes. 2. Male and female's smoking rates were 7.3% and 3.6% each and marked the highest rate of 30 to 40 years: drinking behavior was 66.9% in males and 32.2% in females. 3. The younger males had the worse dietary habits and had the lowest frequency of regular exercise. The older the females were, the more their weight increased. According to the results, health promotion programs by sex are recommended, especially in the target population of 30 to 40 years. and focused on the strategies for promoting self-care and actual health practice: it is strongly suggested that health promotion programs for adolescent and school-aged children before middle aged health behavior begins.
The purpose of this review was to evaluate the effects of diabetes management program using mobile appllication. A systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses: the PRISMA Statement was conducted. Studies published between 2004 and 2014 were reviewed using the following databases: Ovid, CINAHL and Cochrane library. The keywords used were (app*OR mobile) AND (nurs* OR health* OR medic*) AND (diabet*). Selected studies were assessed for methodological quality using Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN)' Checklist. Three hundred seventy five studies were identified, All the 3 studies found mobile application as a valid strategy on clinical usefulness in diabetes management. This review provides updated evidence for app-based management program in diabetes management. Further studies are needed to increase generalizability using randomized controlled trials, enough sample size. In addition, valid measurements are needed to assess the main outcomes.

Purpose: This study evaluated the acquisition and retention effects on diabetes knowledge and academic self-efficacy of patient simulation-based hypoglycemia scenario using a high-fidelity simulator. Methods: A nonequivalent control group pretest/posttest repeated measures quasi-experimental design determined if nursing simulation using a high-fidelity simulator helps students acquire and retain diabetes knowledge and academic self-efficacy. A total of 101 nursing students from two universities participated in this study, comprising the experimental and control groups. The experimental group (n=52) at a university in S city comprised participants in an adult nursing class, nursing practicum, and simulation education. The control group (n=49) at a university in C city participated in an adult nursing class and nursing practicum without simulation education. Results: The experimental group had statistically significant group-time interaction effects on diabetes knowledge (p=.044) and self-confidence (p<.001) of academic self-efficacy compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that the patient simulation-based hypoglycemia scenario using a high-fidelity simulator applied to nursing education is useful in encouraging nursing students to engage in strategies with acquisition and retention effects, enhancing their diabetes knowledge and self-confidence of academic self-efficacy. Therefore, educators should use simulation programs effectively with nursing classes and practicum to enhance the effects of nursing competencies.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate diabetic knowledge, self-care behaviors, and HbA1c of patients with diabetic mellitus in public hospitals. Methods: Participants were 287 adult patients who had been diagnosed with diabetes in two public hospitals in Seoul. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation with the SPSS (PASW) 21.0 program. Results: For general characteristics of the participants, there were significant differences in the level of diabetic knowledge according to age (F=11.28, p<.001), educational level (F=11.07, p<.001), type of health insurance (F=9.38, p<.001), and monthly income (t=-4.58, p<.001) and in the self-care behaviors according to age (F=8.61, p<.001) and in HbA1c according to age (F=6.72, p=.001). As for disease related characteristics of the participants, significant differences were found for self-care behaviors according to education about diabetes (t=3.90, p<.001) and in HbA1c according to education about diabetes (t=3.26, p=.001) and current diabetic therapy methods (F=13.51, p<.001). The study results showed that there was no correlation between diabetic knowledge and self-care behavior, or between self-care behavior and HbA1c. Conclusion: Results indicate that when developing preliminary data on nursing intervention education programs on diabetes, increasing diabetic knowledge and self-care behaviors would help to improve blood glucose levels.

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of a self-control promotion program on self-efficacy, self-care and physiological indicators of patients with diabetes who live in local communities. Method: This research was designed using a nonequivalent control group pre, posttest study. Data were collected from December, 2008 through March, 2009. The participants of the study consisted of 93 patients with diabetes who live in a local community. A self-control promotion program was provided for the experimental group for 12 weeks. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires and direct measurements, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, $X^2$-test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Results: There were significant differences in self-efficacy and self-care between the experimental and control groups. However, there were no significant differences in physiological indicators such as fasting blood sugar, HbA1C, BMI, and BP between the two groups. Conclusion: The results indicate that the self-control promotion program was effective in promoting self-efficacy and self-care, which are crucial factors in controlling diabetes mellitus. However, a longitudinal study needs to be done to confirm the effects of self-control promotion programs on long-term glucose control.
Many people suffers from multiple chronic diseases, leading cause of death and disability in the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting multiple chronic diseases, hypertension, and diabetes. We analyzed the data of one metropolitan city of community health survey, 2015. 4,590 citizens were enrolled in this study. Prevalence of multiple chronic diseases, hypertension, and diabetes were 5.14%, 16.8%, and 3.89%, respectively. Educational attainment, income, salt intake, and BMI were identified as independent risk factors associated with multiple chronic diseases. Educational attainment, income, salt intake were significantly associated with hypertension and age, educational attainment, frequency of alcohol drinking, salt intake were associated with diabetes. Multiple chronic diseases, hypertension, and diabetes were associated with sociodemographic, economic, and health behavioral factors. We should consider these variables in the prevention and management programs and policies for patients with multiple chronic diseases.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the level of psychological insulin resistance and self-care activities and to evaluate the factors affecting self-care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus undergoing insulin therapy to provide basic data for the development of educational programs. Methods: Data were collected through the interviews using a structured questionnaire from August 29 to October 20, 2017, from the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus visiting the Diabetes Mellitus Center at H-General Hospital in J-city. The subjects were 168 patients who had been being treated via self-injection for at least three months after the start of insulin therapy. Data analyses were conducted using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using the SAS WIN 9.2 program. Results: The mean score of psychological insulin resistance was 61.25 (range 19-95) and the mean score of self-care activities was 53.19 (range 18-90). Self-care activities were significantly different by gender (t = -2.94, p= .004), perceived health status (F= 7.00, p< .001), and hypoglycemia during the last three months (t= -2.47, p= .015). Negative correlation was observed between psychological insulin resistance and self-care activities (r= -.33, p< .001). Self-care activities were significantly predicted by psychological insulin resistance, perceived health status, gender, and hypoglycemia during the last three months, and 19.0% of the variance in self-care activities was explained (F= 9.01, p< .001). Conclusion: Psychological insulin resistance in patients undergoing insulin therapy and its effects on self-care activities identified in this study will be useful in starting and maintaining insulin therapy in the future.
The purpose of this study is to identify the factors influencing the depression in workers with diabetes mellitus. Using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). 685 workers with diabetes mellitus who were ≥30 years of age were enrolled. Depression was evaluated on the basis of PHQ-9 levels. Data were analyzed by complex sample linear regression using SPSS/WIN 23.0. The factors influencing depression included gender, age, household type, household income level, education level, type of employment (p>.05). The additional factors included stress perception level, weekly walking days (p>.05). Therefore, it is necessary to prepare systematic programs for depression and a support system for health promotion plan for diabetes mellitus in work places and throughout society. In addition, research on depression management program development is needed.
