  • In our previous work, 3-dimensional hydrodynamic focusing microfluidic device (3D-HFMD) has been developed with the help of locally increased aspect ratio of thickness to width without any horizontal separation wall. In this study, we have investigated 3-dimensional hydrodynamic focusing behaviors inside the 3D-HFMD according to the various geometric and flow conditions. The parametric study has been extensively carried out for the effects of geometric and flow conditions on 3-dimensional hydrodynamic focusing with both 3D-HFMD and previous microfluidic device design based on three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The CFD simulations suggested the proper design window of channel geometry and flow conditions.

  • Recently, device-to-device (D2D) communications have been highlighted to improve the spectral efficiency and offer various user experiences in cellular networks. In this paper, we survey standards and literatures related to the D2D technology and address various advantages of D2D technology, and the problems to be resolved before practically implemented. Especially, by considering an important interference issue between cellular and D2D links, five resource allocation and interference management scenarios are provided and their performances are evaluated through the system level simulations. The simulation results show that the use of D2D significantly improve the cell capacity and the D2D user rate due to the effects of frequency reuse and data off-loading. Notably, it is also shown that an optimal D2D communication range exists to maximize the system performance.

  • Device-to-Device communication(D2D) enables devices in proximity to communicate directly without going through the network infrastructure. In particular, D2D communications in a cellular network can improve the spectral efficiency by allowing the reuse of cellular resources. However, it is not easy to maintain the channel quality of the D2D links and to protect the cellular links from the D2D interferences, since the resource allocations for the cellular users will change with time due to the time-varying nature of the cellular channels. To mitigate the performance degradation of D2D links, we propose to exploit unlicensed bands as auxiliary resources when the D2D links share the uplink cellular resources. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulations.

  • We investigate the optimal resource and power allocation for device-to-device (D2D) communications in a multicell environment. When D2D links reuse the cellular radio resources, each D2D user will interfere with a cellular link and other D2D links, in its own cell as well as in adjacent cells. Under such situation, we propose a coordinated resource allocation scheme that can handle the intercell interferences as well as the intracell interference. For a given resource allocation, we also formulate a power optimization problem and present an algorithm for finding the optimal solution. The resource and power allocation algorithms are designed to maximize the achievable rate of the D2D link, while limiting the generated interference to the cellular link. The performance of the proposed algorithms is evaluated through simulations in a multicell environment. Numerical results are presented to verify the coordination gain in the resource and power allocation.

  • D2D (Device-to-Device) communication on an underlying cellular infrastructure which exploits the same spectrum has several advantages such as increased resource utilization and improved cellular coverage. However, D2D communication system needs to cope with ICI (Inter-Cell Interference) and interference between cellular and D2D links. As a result, macro UEs (User Equipments), especially those located near cell edge, will suffer from serious link performance degradation. We propose a novel interference avoidance mechanism assisted by SRN (Shared Relay Node) in this paper. SRN not only performs data re-transmission as a usual Type II relay but also has several features newly defined to avoid interference between cellular and D2D links. In particular, we suggest resource allocation methods based on the SRN for effective interference avoidance, and evaluate their performance through computer simulations.

  • This study presents a power and Physical Resource Blocks (PRBs) joint allocation algorithm to coordinate uplink (UL) interference in the device-to-device (D2D) underlaying Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) networks. The objective is to find a mechanism to mitigate the UL interference between the two subsystems and maximize the weighted sum throughput as well. This optimization problem is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) which is further decomposed into PRBs assignment and transmission power allocation. Specifically, the scenario of applying imperfect channel state information (CSI) is also taken into account in our study. Analysis reveals that the proposed PRBs allocation strategy is energy efficient and it suppresses the interference not only suffered by the LTE-A system but also to the D2D users. In another side, a low-complexity technique is proposed to obtain the optimal power allocation which resides in one of at most three feasible power vectors. Simulations show that the optimal power allocation combined with the proposed PRBs assignment achieves a higher weighted sum throughput as compared to traditional algorithms even when imperfect CSI is utilized.

  • We proposed a new $p^+/n^+$ gate locally-separated-channel (LSC) bulk FinFET which has vertically formed oxide region in the center of fin body, and device characteristics were optimized and compared with that of normal channel (NC) FinFET. Key device characteristics were investigated by changing length of $n^+$ poly-Si gate ($L_s$), the material filling the trench, and the width and length of the trench at a given gate length ($L_g$). Using 3-dimensional simulations, we confirmed that short-channel effects were properly suppressed although the fin width was the same as that of NC device. The LSC device having the trench non-overlapped with the source/drain diffusion region showed excellent $I_{off}$ suitable for sub-50 nm DRAM cell transistors. Design of the LSC devices were performed to get reasonable $L_s/L_g$ and channel fin width ($W_{cfin}$) at given $L_gs$ of 30 nm, 40 nm, and 50 nm.

  • A diagnostic fluoroscopy X-ray system uses a 32kW or greater X-ray generator for obtaining real-time moving images and high-resolution images. Fluoroscopy X-ray systems have to use a high-capacity AC power source to perform long-time low-power fluoroscopy and short-time high-power spot exposure. In this paper, we propose a hybrid type X-ray generator for fluoroscopy X-ray system which can perform fluoroscopy and spot exposure with a low-capacity AC power source and an energy storage device. The characteristics of energy storage devices are compared and each energy storage device is modelled to equivalent circuit. And the characteristics of available energy are analyzed as a function of output voltage and power. A 32kW class hybrid X-ray generator with EDLC as an energy storage device for fluoroscopy X-ray system was constructed, and its validity was verified by means of simulations and experiments.

  • Recently, device-to-device (D2D) direct communication is attracting much interest and many researches have been conducted. In this paper, we investigated an algorithm to support the D2D direct communication in cellular mobile communication networks. We investigated the optimal D2D scheduling algorithm which can achieve the maximal sum-rate in cellular uplink frequency. We also proposed a simple scheduling algorithm which can considerably reduce the computational complexity, compared to the optimal scheme. Finally, we analyzed the performance of the proposed scheme based on computer simulations.

  • The planar edge termination techniques of field-ring and deep junction field-ring were investigated and optimized using a two-dimensional device simulator TMA MEDICI. By trenching the field ring site which would be implanted, a better blocking capability can be obtained. The results show that the p-n junction with deep junction field-ring can accomplish near 30% increase of breakdown voltage in comparison with the conventional field-rings. The deep junctionfield-rings are easy to design and fabricate and consume same area but they are relatively sensitive to surface charge. Extensive device simulations as well as qualitative analyses confirm these conclusions.
