  • Graphene is a 2-D sheet of $sp^2$-bonded carbon arranged in a honeycomb lattice. This material has attracted major interest, and there are many ongoing efforts in developing graphene devices because of its high charge mobility and crystal quality. Therefore clear understanding of the substrate effect and mechanism of synthesis of graphene is important for potential applications and device fabrication of graphene. In a published paper in J. Phys. Chem. C (2008), the effect of substrate on the atomic/electronic structures of graphene is negligible for graphene made by mechanical cleavage. However, nobody shows the interaction between Ni substrate and graphene. Therefore, we have studied this interaction. In order to studying these effect between graphene and Ni substrate, We have observed graphene synthesized on Ni substrate and graphene transferred on $SiO_2$/Si substrate through Raman spectroscopy. Because Raman spectroscopy has historically been used to probe structural and electronic characteristics of graphite materials, providing useful information on the defects (D-band), in-plane vibration of sp2 carbon atoms (G-band), as well as the stacking orders (2D-band), we selected this as analysis tool. In our study, we could not observe the doping effect between graphene and Ni substrate or between graphene and $SiO_2$/Si substrate because the shift of G band in Raman spectrum was not occurred by charge transfer. We could noticed that the bonding force between graphene and Ni substrate is more strong than Van de Waals force which is the interaction between graphene and $SiO_2$/Si. Furthermore, the synthesized graphene on Ni substrate was in compressive strain. This phenomenon was observed by 2D band blue-shift in Raman spectrum. And, we consider that the graphene is incommensurate growth with Ni polycrystalline substrate.

  • We fabricated a buried-ridge waveguide laser diode (B-RWG LD) which has more advantages for obtaining lateral single mode operation on the same ridge width and for the planarization of the device surface, compared to the conventional RWG LD. In this LD, the difference of the lateral effective refractive index can be controlled by the thickness of the InGaAsP layer which is grown on the active and the p-InP layers. The InGaAsP multiple quantum well was grown on a n-InP substrate by the CBE. The buried ridge structure was formed by selective wet etchings, followed by liquid phase epitaxy methods. The fabricated LD with the ridge width of 7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ showed a linear increase of the optical power up to 20 ㎽ without any kinks and a saturated output power of more than 80 ㎽. By measuring the far field pattern, we demonstrate that LDs with the ridge widths of 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were operated in a lateral single mode up to 2.7I$_{th}$ and 2.4I$_{th}$, respectively.ely.

  • In OBIGGS, a small amount of ozone in the atmosphere damages the polymer membrane. Therefore, the ozone removal device is installed at the front end to prevent the damage of the membrane by reducing the concentration of ozone in the gas delivered to the membrane. In this study, two hollow fiber membranes, PI and PSf, used to fabrication hollow fiber module with an effective membrane area of $6.37cm^2$ for gas separation in OBIGGS. The ozone concentration in the chamber was maintained at 2-3 ppm. The gas was continuously supplied into the module by using a pump. The gas permeation characteristics and the tensile strength were evaluated as a function of ozone exposure time. The PI-based hollow fiber membrane showed only 20% reduction in the transmittance, and remained its original uniformity without any significant changes. However, when PSf type hollow fiber membranes were used, the permeability decreased by more than 80% and the tensile strength decreased by more than 70%.

  • Alkaline fuel cells using liquid fuels such as hydrazine and ammonia are gaining great attention as a clean and renewable energy solution possibly owing to advantages such as excellent energy density, simple structure, compact size in fuel container, and ease of storage and transportation. However, common shortcomings including cathode flooding, fuel crossover, side yield reactions, and fuel security and toxicity are still challenging issues. Real time monitoring of fuel concentrations integrated into a fuel cell device can help improving fuel cell performance via predicting any loss of fuels used at a cathode for efficient energy production. There have been extensive research efforts made on developing real-time sensing platforms for hydrazine and ammonia. Among these, recent advancements in electrochemical sensors offering high sensitivity and selectivity, easy fabrication, and fast monitoring capability for analysis of hydrazine and ammonia concentrations will be introduced. In particular, research trend on the integration of metallic and metal oxide nanoparticles and also their hybrids with carbon-based nanomaterials into electrochemical sensing platforms for improvement in sensitivity and selectivity will be highlighted.

  • New yellow quinoline-dione dye derivatives were designed and synthesized for use in image sensor color filters. The synthesized compounds have a basic chemical structure composed of quinoline and dione groups. New materials were evaluated on the basis of their optical and thermal properties under conditions mimicking those of a commercial device fabrication process. A comparison of their related performances revealed that, between the two prepared compounds, 2-(3-hydroxyquinolin-2(1H)-ylidene)-1H-indene-1,3(2H)-dione (HQIDO) exhibited the superior performance as an image sensor color filter material, including a solubility greater than 0.5 wt% in propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate solvent and a high decomposition temperature of 298 ℃, respectively. The results suggest that HQIDO can be used as a yellow dye additive in an image sensor colorant.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) devices have generated a lot of interest in recent decades. TENG technology, which is one of the technologies for harvesting mechanical energy among the energy wasted in the environment, is obtained by the dual effect of electrostatic induction and triboelectric charging. Recently, a multilayer thin film stacking method (or layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique) is being considered as a method to improve the performance of TENG and apply it to new fields. This LbL assembly technology can not only improve the performance of TENG and successfully overcome the thickness problem in applications, but also present an inexpensive, environmentally friendly process and be used for large-scale and mass production. In this review, recent studies in the accomplishment of LbL-based materials for TENG devices are reviewed, and the potential for energy harvesting devices reviewed so far is checked. The advantages of the TENG device fabricated by applying the LbL technology are discussed, and finally, the direction and perspective of this fabrication technology for the implementation of various ultra-thin TENGs are briefly presented.

  • Here, the surface characteristics of the dielectric were controlled by introducing the self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as the intermediate layers on the surface of the AlOx dielectric, and the electrical performances of the organic charge modulated transistor (OCMFET) were significantly improved. The organic intermediate layer was applied to control the surface energy of the AlOx gate dielectric acting as a capacitor plate between the control gate (CG) and the floating gate (FG). By applying the intermediate layers on the gate dielectric surface, and the field-effect mobility (μOCMFET) of the OCMFET devices could be efficiently controlled. We used the four kinds of SAM materials, octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA), butylphosphonic acid (BPA), (3-bromopropyl)phosphonic acid (BPPA), and (3-aminopropyl)phosphonic acid (APPA), and each μOCMFET was measured at 0.73, 0.41, 0.34, and 0.15 cm2V-1s-1, respectively. The results could be suggested that the characteristics of each organic SAM intermediate layer, such as the length of the alkyl chain and the type of functionalized end-group, can control the electrical performances of OCMFET devices and be supported to find the optimized fabrication conditions, as an efficient sensing platform device.

  • β-Gallium oxide (Ga2O3), an ultra-wide bandgap semiconductor, has attracted great attention due to its promising applications for high voltage power devices. The most stable phase among five different polytypes, β-Ga2O3 has the wider bandgap of 4.9 eV and higher breakdown electric field of 8 MV/cm. Furthermore, it can be grown from melt source, implying higher growth rate and lower fabrication cost than other wide bandgap semiconductors such as SiC, GaN and diamond for the power device applications. In this study, β-Ga2O3 bulk crystals were grown by the edge-defined film-fed growth (EFG) process. The growth direction and the principal surface were set to be the [010] direction and the (100) plane of the β-Ga2O3 crystal, respectively. The spectra measured by Raman an alysis could exhibit the crystal phase an d impurity dopin g in the β-Ga2O3 ingot, and the crystallinity quality and crystal direction were analyzed using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). The crystal quality and various properties of as-grown β-Ga2O3 ribbon was systematically analyzed in order to investigate the spatial variation in entire crystal grown by EFG method.

  • The virtual patient dataset is a collection of diagnostic data from various sources acquired from a single patient into a coordinate system of three-dimensional visualization. Virtual patient dataset makes it possible to establish a treatment plan, simulate various treatment procedures, and create a treatment planning delivery device. Clinicians can design and simulate a patient's smile on the virtual patient dataset and select the optimal result from the diagnostic process. The selected treatment plan can be delivered identically to the patient using manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing, milling, and injection molding. The delivery of this treatment plan can be linked to the final prosthesis through mockup confirmation through provisional restoration fabrication and delivery in the patient's mouth. In this way, if the diagnostic data superimposition and processing accuracy during the manufacturing process are guaranteed, 3D digital smile design simulated in 3D visualization can be accurately delivered to the real patient. As a clinical application method of the virtual patient dataset, we suggest a decision-making method that can exclude occlusal adjustment treatment from the treatment plan through the digital occlusal pressure analysis. A comparative analysis of whole-body scans before and after temporomandibular joint treatment was suggested for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis patients with temporomandibular joint disease. Occlusal plane and smile aesthetic analysis based on the virtual patient dataset was presented when treating patients with complete dentures.

  • Magneto-optical (MO) materials have attracted much attention, since they can be utilized for various optical applications, such as magnetic field sensors, optical current sensors, optical isolators, and optical circulators. In this study, alumino-borosilicate (ABS) glasses with high concentrations of Dy3+ ions were fabricated by a conventional melt-quenching technique, and the dependence of their thermal, optical, and magneto-optical properties on Dy3+ ion concentration was investigated. The MO property of the glasses was investigated by measurement of Faraday rotation at 1550 nm. The Faraday rotation angle increased linearly with the increase of Dy3+ ion concentration in the glasses. A very high Verdet constant of -6.86 rad/(T·m) was obtained for glass with a Dy3+ ion concentration of 30 mol%. In addition, the ABS-Dy glasses showed good thermal stability of greater than 128 ℃ against crystallization, and high optical transmission of 70% in the visible to near-infrared windows of 480-720, 1390-1560, and 1800-2400 nm. Due to the high Verdet constant and good thermal stability, the ABS-Dy glasses in this study could be candidate optical materials for MO device applications at 1550 nm.
