  • This study aimed to develop members with the optimum impact characteristics to ensure a protected space for passengers in the case of automobile collisions. Accordingly, these members were fabricated to provide sufficient rigidity and safety to the passenger room structure and to absorb large amounts of energy during collision. In particular, CFRP members were fabricated with different section shapes such as square and single- and double-hat shapes. Next, their impact collapse characteristics and collapse modes were quantitatively analyzed according to the changes in section shapes and stacking angles. This analysis was performed to obtain design data that can be applied in the development of optimum lightweight members for automobiles.

  • Explosions inside transportation tunnels might result in failure of tunnel structures. This study investigated the failure mechanisms of circular cast-iron tunnels in saturated soil subjected to medium internal blast loading. This issue is crucial to tunnel safety as many transportation tunnels run through saturated soils. At the same time blast loading on saturated soils may induce residual excess pore pressure, which may result in soil liquefaction. A series of numerical simulations were carried out using Finite Element program LS-DYNA. The effect of soil liquefaction was simulated by the Federal Highway soil model. It was found that the failure modes of tunnel lining were differed with different levels of blast loading. The damage and failure of the tunnel lining was progressive in nature and they occurred mainly during lining vibration when the main event of blast loading was over. Soil liquefaction may lead to more severe failure of tunnel lining. Soil deformation and soil liquefaction were determined by the coupling effects of lining damage, lining vibration, and blast loading. The damage of tunnel lining was a result of internal blast loading as well as dynamic interaction between tunnel lining and saturated soil, and stress concentration induced by a ventilation shaft connected to the tunnel might result in more severe lining damage.

  • This study focuses on seismic behaviour of tall piers characterized by high slender ratio. Two analysis models were developed based on elastic-plastic hinged beam element and elastic-plastic fiber beam element, respectively. The effect of the division density of elastic-plastic hinged beam element on seismic demand was discussed firstly to seek a rational analysis model for tall piers. Then structural seismic behaviour such as the formation of plastic hinges, the development of plastic zone, and the displacement at the top of the tall piers were investigated through incremental dynamic analysis. It showed that the seismic behaviour of a tall pier was quite different from that of a lower pier due to higher modes contributions. In a tall pier, an additional plastic zone may occur at the middle height of the pier with the increase of seismic excitation. Moreover, the maximum curvature reaction at the bottom section and maximum lateral displacement at the top turned out to be seriously out of phase for a tall pier due to the higher modes effect, and thus pushover analysis can not appropriately predict the local displacement capacity.

  • System identification is a fundamental step towards the application of structural health monitoring and damage detection techniques. On this respect, the development of evolved identification strategies is a priority for obtaining reliable and repeatable baseline modal parameters of an undamaged structure to be adopted as references for future structural health assessments. The paper presents the identification of the modal parameters of the Guangzhou New Television Tower, China, using a data-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-data) approach complemented with an appropriate automatic mode selection strategy which proved to be successful in previous literature studies. This well-known approach is based on a clustering technique which is adopted to discriminate structural modes from spurious noise ones. The method is applied to the acceleration measurements made available within the task I of the ANCRiSST benchmark problem, which cover 24 hours of continuous monitoring of the structural response under ambient excitation. These records are then subdivided into a convenient number of data sets and the variability of modal parameter estimates with ambient temperature and mean wind velocity are pointed out. Both 10 minutes and 1 hour long records are considered for this purpose. A comparison with finite element model predictions is finally carried out, using the structural matrices provided within the benchmark, in order to check that all the structural modes contained in the considered frequency interval are effectively identified via SSI-data.

  • The ceramic filters were developed using technology similar to that of quartz crystal and electromechanical filter. However, the key to this development involved the theoretical analysis of vibration modes and material improvements of piezoelectric ceramics. The primary application of ceramic filters has been for consumer-market use. Accordingly, a major emhpasis has involved mass production technology, leading to low-priced devices. A typical ceramic filter includes monolithic resonators and capacitors packaged in unique configurations. Nakazawa developed a double-mode resonator as two acoustically coupled single resonators. And he developed 10.7MHz crystal filters using multi-energy trapping mode of thickness shear vibration. He succeeded in realizing a two-pole band pass filter response without external inductance by splitting a dot electrode to creat coupled symmetric and antisymmetric vibration modes. Accordingly, the simulation for ceramic filter were important. So that, this paper were investigated the pass frequency of filter on the electrode length and thickness of ceramic.

  • The development of SFCL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) is getting more important as the power demand is increased rapidly. Up to now, several kinds of SFCL have been proposed and it is expected that they will be applied to appropriate position considering their own properties. Amongst those proposed SFCL, flux-lock type SFCL using the magnetic cancelation for current limiting has the advantages of overcoming the technical difficulties that other types of SFCLs have. In this paper, the integrated three-phase flux-lock type SFCL was fabricated and its operational modes were investigated through the short circuit tests. The operational mode were to divided into four mode according to the variation of the currents flowing into the secondary winding connected the superconducting elements and the speed of the quench generation. It was expected that the improvement of current limiting characteristics of the SFCL could be possible through control of the operational mode.

  • Molecular modeling study has been performed to assist in the design of PTP1B inhibitors using FlexX. FlexX dockings with 19 test ligands, whose structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography, were successful in reproducing the experimental conformations within the protein. An increase in biological activity is observed as hydrophobic character of formylchromone derivatives increases. Most ligands bind to the activesite regions of the protein successfully in two different score runs. The Drug score run gave better results than the FlexX score run based on the score, rank, binding modes and bond distance of docked structures. Consensus values from the CScore scoring function are between 3 and 5, suggesting that the scoring scheme is reliable. All formylchromone inhibitors considered in this work show unidirectional binding modes in the active site pocket, which is contrary to the bidirectional X-ray results by Malamas et al. and amino acid residues responsible for such orientation are identified to help further development of the inhibitors.

  • Axially loaded reinforced concrete columns are hardly exist in practice due to the development of some bending moments. These moments could be produced by gravity loads or the lateral loads. First, the current paper presents a detailed analysis on the overall structural behavior of 15 eccentrically loaded columns as well as one concentrically loaded control one. Columns bent in either single curvature or double curvature modes are tested experimentally up to failure under the effect of different end eccentricities combinations. Three end eccentricities ratio were studied, namely, 0.1b, 0.3b and 0.5b, where b is the column width. Second, an expression correlated the decay in the normalized axial capacity of the column and the acting end eccentricities was developed based on the experimental results and then verified against the available formula. Third, based on the equivalent column concept, the equivalent pin-ended columns were obtained for columns bent in either single or double curvature modes. And then, the effect of end eccentricity ratio was correlated to the equivalent column length. Finally, a simplified design procedure was proposed for eccentrically loaded braced column by transferring it to an equivalent axially loaded pin-ended slender column. The results of the proposed design procedure showed comparable results against the results of the ACI 318-14 code.

  • It is a plan the government increases a railroad section SOC investment, and to activate railroad construction while a railroad wins the spotlight with green transportation. But an error of the demand forecast that is a base of a railroad investment evaluation follows in occurring big, there is it with an operation with an obstacle of a railroad investment. Case of the Incheon International Airport Railroad which went into operation recently, While a present transportation demand showed about 10% than a demand forecasted in a past conference, it was magnified in a social problem. A lot of research was gone on in road project about traffic demand forecast and error, a study to find out the error cause is an insufficient situation although errors of a railroad occurs big. So, this study looked for errors and causes about trip generation model and modes sharing model of railroad demand forecast but it was defined causes so that it can occur similar problems in the future. Especially it investigated causes after comparing rate of development plan for the realization and O/D size in trip generation model and after comparing rate of modes sharing of past and current and conducting a survey for airport users. In conclusion, it suggested method to reduce errors of railroad demand forecasting in the future.
