A single cross, Pyeonganok, is an yellow flint-like maize hybrid (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This hybrid, which has a high yield of dry matter was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KS140 and KS94. KS140 is the seed parent and KS94 is the pollen parent of Pyeonganok. Silking date of Pyeonganok is 3 days later than that of check hybrid, Kwangpyeongok. Stay-green of Pyeonganok is not greatly different with that of Kwangpyeongok. It has resistance to lodging. It has moderately resistance to Bipolaris maydis (southern corn leaf blight), Exserohilum turcicum (northern corn leaf blight), and corn borer but sensitivity to black streaked dwarf virus (BSDV). Pyeonganok was evaluated for the yields of dry matter at four locations from 2006 to 2008. The yields of Pyeonganok in dry matter was 20.84 ton/ha. Seed production of Pyeonganok has gone well due to a good match during crossing between the seed parent, KS140 and the pollen parent, KS94 in Yeongwol.

Iris dichotoma Pall. found on Daechung Island in Korea has been designated as an endangered species. To aid in conservation efforts of this species, this study investigated its germination characteristics and seed dormancy type. Four sets of seeds were incubated at different temperatures (4/1℃, 15/6℃, 20/10℃, and 25/15℃). One set of seeds was cold stratified (4 weeks at 4/1℃). The final germination rate and mean germination time showed that the optimal germination temperature was 25/15℃. Final germination rates were ~70%, showing no significant difference among temperature treatments. However, mean germination time were significantly different among all temperature treatments except for 4/1℃. Mean germination time for seeds with temperature treatments of 15/6℃, 20/10℃, and 25/15℃ were 3.2, 2.1, and 1.5 weeks, respectively. At 25/15℃, the mean germination time was half of that at 15/6℃. Seeds of I. dichotoma had fully developed embryos at the time of dispersal. No additional growth of the embryo was observed. Cold stratification did not affect the final germination rate or the mean germination time. This study shows that seeds of I. dichotoma have no physiological or morphological dormancy, unlike other members of the Iris genus known to have seed dormancy that needs a relatively high incubation temperature (≥25/15℃) for mass propagation to occur. These results will be useful for understanding ecophysiological mechanisms related to the species' habitat. They are also useful for mass propagation of I. dichotoma for the purpose of conserving this endangered species.

OMiYakSung theory consists of various herbs that contain at least one or more of the five flavors. This theory has been used to prevent human diseases and enhance the immune system. The main objective of the present study was to investigate efficacy differences and changes in ingredients of blended and single herb extracts based on OMiYakSung theory. We selected three herbs Coptis japonica Makino, Cimicifuga heracleifolia Komarov, and white Poria cocos and assessed their physiological effect. As results, the blended extracts showed excellent cell migration effect at 400 ug/mL concentration, compared to the single extract. In addition, the blended extracts enhanced immune function by increasing the activity of dendritic cells and showed the highest antioxidant activity by DPPH assay and HPLC-ABTS assay. In this study, we developed a new materials that can be applicable to cosmetics and pharmaceuticals field by applying oriental medicine theory.

This study relates to the development of a new gel sheet mask that finally does not require support based on the reactivity and acid/base reaction experiments of Tamarindus indica seed gum (TG), ethanol, and polyols. When TG and a specific alcohol was mixed at a certain mixing ratio, a transparent gel is formed by reaction with each component, and thus a gel sheet mask without support might be obtained using the mixture. In order to maximize skin tone improvement, a carbonation system of acid and base reactions was introduced, and skin brightness and moisturizing power were evaluated using a spectrophotometer and a moisture measuring device. Through this study, it is expected that the gelation reaction by hydrogen bonding of TG, ethanol, and polyols can be developed into various types, and the gel sheet mask formulation introduced in this study is expected to help develop new products in the future.
'Hwangdaok', a new maize F1 hybrid (Zea mays L.), was developed by the maize breeding team at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2016. The high-yielding yellow dent hybrid named 'Hwangdaok' was obtained by crossing between two inbred lines, 'KS203' and 'KS190'. After advanced yield trial in Suwon in 2012, regional yield trial was subsequently carried out to evaluate the growth and yield of 'Hwangdaok' at three different locations from 2014 to 2016. The number of days to silking of 'Hwangdaok' is 76. The plant height is 262 cm and ear height ratio is 51%, which are similar to those of 'Jangdaok'. It has resistance to lodging. The number of ears per 100 plants is 95. The ear length is 21.3 cm and weight of 100 seeds is 34.7 g, similar to those of 'Jangdaok'. It has moderate resistance to southern leaf blight (Bipolaris maydis) and European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). The grain yield (10 ton/ha) of 'Hwangdaok' is 6% higher than that of 'Jangdaok'. The seed production rate of 'Hwangdaok' is acceptable due to good synchronization of flowering period during crossing between the seed parent, KS203, and the pollen parent, KS190, in Yeongwol. F1 seed yield was 1.68 ton/ha. 'Hwangdaok' can be a suitable cultivar to plain areas in Korea. (Variety registration No. 7502).
This research investigated the preparation of activated carbon derived from Krabok (Irvingia malayana) seed shells to improve the quality of crude glycerol obtained during biodiesel production. The activated carbon was prepared using a dry chemical activation method with NaOH, utilizing an innovative biomass incinerator. The results revealed that the resulting KC/AC-two-step exhibited favorable physicochemical adsorption properties, with a high surface area of 758.72 m2/g and an iodine number of 611.10 mg/g. These values meet the criteria of the industrial product standard for activated carbon No. TIS 900-2004, as specified by the Ministry of Industry in Thailand. Additionally, the adsorption efficiency for methylene blue reached an impressive 99.35 %. This developed activated carbon was then used to improve the quality of crude glycerol obtained from biodiesel production. The experimental results showed that the KC/AC-two-step increased the purity of crude glycerol to 73.61 %. In comparison, commercially available activated carbon (C/AC) resulted in a higher crude glycerol purity of 81.19 %, as analyzed by the GC technique. Additionally, the metal content (Zn, Cu, Fe, Pb, Cd, and Na) in purified glycerol using KC/AC-two-step was below the standards for heavy metals permitted in food and cosmeceuticals by the Food and Drug Administration of Thailand and the European Committee for Food Contact Materials and Articles. As a result, it can be inferred that Krabok seed shells have favorable properties for producing activated carbon suitable as an adsorbent to enhance crude glycerol purity. Furthermore, the improved crude glycerol from this research has potential for various industrial applications.
This study was conducted to investigate seed germination, seedling growth, and responses to herbicides of Bidens tripartita L. When the field-collected seeds were stored under a dry-room temperature, dry-low temperature, wet-low temperature, or dry-high temperature condition, no seeds were germinated in a growth chamber with 14 hr photoperiod up to 35 days after the storage. Exceptionally, however, some seeds stored under a wet-room temperature condition were germinated after 25 days of the storage. This might be due to the fact that the seed coats were damaged by fungi which developed during the storage. Seeds stored under a wet-low temperature condition (stratification) began to be germinated after 3 months of the storage and the germination rate increased with a prolonged stratification. Almost all seeds were germinated after 9 months of the stratification. These results suggest that the dormancy of B. tripartita L. seeds relate to the seed coat and thus several attempts were made to induce seed germination through damaging or weakening the seed coat. Freezing($-20^{\circ}C$), drying($100^{\circ}C$), or swelling($40^{\circ}C$) of the seeds was not effective to induce the germination. Treatments of concentrated sulfuric acid, $KNO_3$, or gibberellin to the seeds had no effect on inducing the germination. However, ethrel had a stimulatory effect on the germination of the seeds with an optimum concentration of 250ppm. A seed cutting was also effective to induce the germination, but seedlings from the seeds had cutted cotyledons. Germination of the stratified seeds varied with the temperature condition to which they were subjected, but not with light. The germination rate was the highest at 35 - $40^{\circ}C$. Although the seeds were not able to germinate under a submerged condition, seedlings after 2-leaf-stage exhibited better growth under a submerged or a subirrigated condition than under an upland condition. Among the herbicides tested, pyrazosulfuton-ethyl, linuron, and bentazone were found to be effective for controlling B. tripartita L., having more herbicidal effect with an earlier application.
Infection rates of oyster ovarian parasite, Marteiliodes chungmuensis and productivity of the oyster shellstock infected with the parasite were investigated at the main seed collection areas in the southern coast of Korea where the extreme bad seed collection of oyster occurred in 1992 and 1993 to evaluate the cause of the bad seed collection. Additionally, the bacterial flora of the sea water and oyster lana were examined to identify the shellfish larva pathogenic bacteria like Vibrio sp. and Pseueomonas sp. In August 1992 to September 1993, infection rate of oyster ovarian parasite, M. chungmuensis at Tongyong, Kyongsangnam province, and Yosu, Chollanam province where the bad seed collection occurred, were $11.8\~100\%$ and $14.3\~100\%$, respectively. But the parasite was not detected in the shellstock collected at Daechon, Chungchongnam province. While a virus-like particle was identified in the cytoplasm of the egg infected by the parasite. The parasite infected egg was not able to fertilize completely. Uninfected egg in the gonad contaminated by the parasite could be able to fertilize but showed an abnormal development till D-shaped larva and then, died of necrosis after D-shaped lana. And some lana developed from low lipid content egg could not develop to the spat and died after the early umbo stage. The predominant bacteria in the oyster lana collected at bad seed collection areas were Pseudomonas sp. and Pseudomonas like bacteria and the occupancy rates were $53.3\~87.1\%$.
Three species of Fusarium, F. fujikuroi, F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum, are known to be associated with bakanae disease of rice [1, 2]. F. fujikuroi infects rice flowers and survive in endosperm and embryo of the seeds. Infected seed is an important source of primary inoculum of pathogens [3]. Seeds of rice (Oryza sativa cv. Boramchan) collected from bakanae-infected field were found to be 96% infected with Fusarium sp., 52% with F. fujikuroi, 42% with F. verticillioides, and 12% with F. proliferatum as determined by incubation method and species-specific PCR assays. F. fujikuroi was detected at lemma/palea, endosperm and embryo whereas F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum were recovered only from lemma/palea by means of component plating test. Seed disinfection methods have been developed to control bakanae disease and prochloraz has been most widely used for rice seeds. Two chemicals formulated with prochloraz (PC 1) and prochloraz + hexaconazole (PC 2) that inhibit biosynthesis of ergosterol strongly reduced the incidence of Fusarium spp. on selective media to 4.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Disease symptoms of rice seedlings in nursery soil were alleviated by chemical treatment; seedlings with elongated leaves or wide angle between leaf and stem were strikingly reduced from 15.6 to 3.2% (PC 1) and 0 (PC 2), stem rots were reduced from 56.9 to 26.2% (PC 1) and 32.1% (PC 2), and normal seedling increased from 0.4 to 13.3% (PC 2). Prochloraz has some disadvantages and risks such as the occurrence of tolerant pathogens [4] and effects on the sterol synthesis in animals and humans [5]. For these reasons, it is necessary to develop new disinfection method that do not induce fungal tolerance and are safe to humans and animals. Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$), that is less toxic, produces no harmful byproducts, and has high oxidizing power, has been reported to be effective at disinfection of several phytopathogenic fungi including Colletotrichum spp. and Alternaria spp. [6]. Gaseous $ClO_2$ applied to rice seeds at a concentration of 20 ppm strongly suppressed mycelial growth of Fusarium fujikuroi, F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum. The incidence of Fusarium spp. in dry seed with 8.7% seed moisture content (SMC) tended to decrease as the concentration of $ClO_2$ increased from 20 to 40 ppm. Applying 40 ppm $ClO_2$ at 90% relative humidity, incidence was reduced to 5.3% and resulted in significant reduction of disease symptoms on MS media. In nursery soil, stem rot was reduced from 56.9 to 15.4% and the number of normal seedlings increased from 0.4 to 25.5%. With water-soaked seeds (33.1% SMC) holding moisture in the endosperm and embryo, the effectiveness of disinfection using $ClO_2$ increased, even when treated with only 20 ppm for four hours. This suggests that moisture was a key element for action of $ClO_2$. Removal of the palea and lemma from seeds significantly decreased the incidence of Fusarium spp. to 3.0%. Seed germination appeared to decrease slightly by water-soaking at $30^{\circ}C$ because of increased SMC and by physical damage of embryos from hulling. These results indicate that the use of gaseous $ClO_2$ was effective as a means to disinfect rice seeds infected with Fusarium spp. and that moisture around the pathogens in the seed was an important factor for the action of $ClO_2$. Further investigations should be conducted to ascertain the best conditions for complete disinfection of Fusarium spp. that infect deep site of rice seeds.
A new sprout-soybean cultivar, "Galchae" was developed at the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 2008. Galchae was selected from a cross between YS1287 and Jinju#1. The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials to evaluate the performance of Iksan 64 were carried out from 2005 to 2008. This cultivar has a determinate growth habit with purple flower, brown pubescence, brown seed coat, brown hilum, rhomboid leaflet shape and small seed size (8.4 grams per 100 seeds). The maturity date of "Galchae" is 6 days later than the check variety, "Dawon". It has good seed quality for soybean-sprout and resistance to lodging. This cultivar has resistance to soybean mosaic virus (SMV) and necrotic symptom (SMV-N). The average yield of "Galchae" was 2.51 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials (RYT) for double cropping carried out for two years from 2007 to 2008.
