  • Neural stem cells (NSCs) have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple nervous system cell types. During embryonic development, the concentrations of soluble biological molecules have a critical role in controlling cell proliferation, migration, differentiation and apoptosis. In an effort to find optimal culture conditions for the generation of desired cell types in vitro, we used a microfluidic chip-generated growth factor gradient system. In the current study, NSCs in the microfluidic device remained healthy during the entire period of cell culture, and proliferated and differentiated in response to the concentration gradient of growth factors (epithermal growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor). We also showed that overexpression of ASCL1 in NSCs increased neuronal differentiation depending on the concentration gradient of growth factors generated in the microfluidic gradient chip. The microfluidic system allowed us to study concentration-dependent effects of growth factors within a single device, while a traditional system requires multiple independent cultures using fixed growth factor concentrations. Our study suggests that the microfluidic gradient-generating chip is a powerful tool for determining the optimal culture conditions.

  • Background: Price control alone may not successfully restrain growth in health expenditures. This study aimed to propose fee adjustment model suitable for Korea reflecting health service volume and to clarify applicability of the model by comparing actual conversion factor with estimated conversion factor from simulation of this model. Methods: Fee adjustment model was developed based on Alberta's fee adjustment formula in Canada and 7 alternatives were assessed according to diversely applied parameters of the model. Results: Estimated conversion factors of the tertiary care hospital and the hospital were lower than actual conversion factors, since the utilization of heath service has been increased. However, there was no big difference between estimated conversion factors and actual conversion factors of the general hospital and the clinic. Eventually this fee adjustment model could estimate proper conversion factor reflecting health service volume. Conclusion: This model may be applicable to the mechanism as determining conversion factor between insurer and provider via negotiation and controling growth in health expenditures.

  • Transmission loss of specimen is calculated by measuring energy of incident and transmission and using reverberant room of large size. But normal measurement of transmission loss has trouble because it is actually demanded that large area and specimen of certain size is satisfied with condition of diffused sound field. Especially, in case of mechanical component, interested frequency band is mid-frequency band between 500 ~ 2k Hz, and it is used to be available to minimize a reverberation chamber under conditions satisfying acoustic one because production of specimen for transmission loss measurement has limit. But, as in semi-reverberation room, it is difficult to satisfy condition of diffuse sound field and modification factor is applied to complement that. Correction factor when measuring transmission loss using semi-reverberation chamber is required accuracy because it works as main factor determining reliability of reuslts on transmission loss. In this study, it is analyzed that an effect on correction factor based on varying materials and sizes of specimens in order to deduction of it. Also It is confirmed that applied by elicited correction factor with actual railway vehicle's floor has reliability.

  • Recently, the needs and concerns regarding power loss have been increasing according to energy conservation at the level of the national policies and the business strategies of power utilities. In particular, the issue of power loss is the main factor for determining rates for electrical consumption in the deregulation of the electrical industry. However, because of the lack of management for power loss load factors (LLF) it is difficult to make a calculation for power loss and to make a decision concerning the electric rates. Furthermore, loss factor (k-factor) in Korea, which is of primary significance in the calculation of distribution power loss, has been used as a fixed value of 0.32 since the fiscal year 1973. Therefore, this study presents the statistical calculation methods of the loss factors classified by load types and seasons by using the practical data of 65 primary feeders that have been selected by appropriate procedures. Based on the above, the algorithms and methods, as well as the optimal method of the distribution loss management classified by facilities such as primary feeders, distribution transformers and secondary feeders is presented. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed methods.

  • In this paper, for the mixed mode fatigue problem, the method of determining testing load was proposed. It is based on the plastic zone size and the limited maximum stress intensity factor by ASTM STANDARD E 647-00. The application method of maximum tangential stress criterion and the stress intensity factor for the finite width specimen was proposed. In the result of applying the method to mixed mode fat gut test for A5052 H34, it obtained the satisfactory experimental results on the stable crack growth.

  • The purpose of this study was to classify the somatotype on obese boys of 9 to 11 years old and to make an offer the basis which would be suitable for basic pattern construction by studying of their characteristics, forms and shapes. For this study, data were analyzed by using of photographic measurements in regard to 40 variables. The factor scores used in factor analysis become the basis of determining the value of each variable of the cluster analysis. 1) Eight main factors were extracted from factor analysis. 2) Three types were classified by cluster analysis. 3) Correspondent analysis was applied to data of 4 types in anthropometry between 3 types in photometry.

  • Fuzzy logic control(FLC) has been studied extensively and has been applied in various applications. The most popular control strategy takes the Fuzzy Proportional-Integral(FPI) form while systematic methods have been developed to derive the fuzzy rules and membership functions the choice of the scaling factors remains an open problem, In this paper an analytical FPI scaling factor determining method is derived based on the functional equivalence of the PI and FPI controllers. Simulation have been carried out with a brushless DC motor drive system as test-bed the obtained results drive system as test-bed the obtained results have verified that the derived method is applicable to both the initial choice and further tuning of the FPI scaling factors.

  • The future will see all industries become technology-driven in the competitive global marketplace. Venture firms with deep technological roots and innovation strategies have some advantages. In this situation, existing methods for technology assessment are not enough to evaluate their relative technology competitiveness. Therefore, a more useful and comprehensive approach is needed to obtain the desired outcomes for measuring the relative competitiveness of technology effectively. In this research, I applied factor analysis, which is methodology to be capable of determining the common factors and associated weights reasonably, to the development of the technology competitiveness indexes.

  • In this paper, a finite element based method far determining factor of safety of slopes which has certain advantages over conventional limit equilibrium methods is described. Particularly, the slope failure behaviour considering different seepage conditions is produced by finite element method using strength reduction technique. It is shown that both the failure mechanism and the safety factor that are analyzed by the FEM using strength reduction technique are an effective means of slope stability analysis. And the stability of a slope with rising water table and rapid drawdown are analyzed and the results are compared with the simplified Bishop Method of the Limit Equilibrium Methods.

  • This study evaluated the influence of the strength mismatch of HAZ for a plastic ${\eta}$-factor, which is the principle parameter determining the plastic portion of J-integral to assess the fracture toughness of the weldment. The specimen of tensile and hardness test was manufactured from the piping applying narrow-gap welding, and the mechanical properties of weldment, HAZ and a base metal were obtained. To perform the finite element analysis according to the ratio of strength mismatch, the material properties was chosen with the change of strength using the determination method of Ramberg-Osgood constant. Also, the influence of the strength mismatch of HAZ was determined using finite element analysis by those properties.
