  • Ultrasonography is a powerful and useful method for the examination of the various shoulder diseases. The use of high-resolution transducer and technical evolution allowed the improvement of the accuracy of detection of various shoulder pathology including the rotator cuff disease. However, its limitation is that there is marked disparity in the interpretation according to the operators' experience. This article describes the appropriate scan technique of ultrasonography around shoulder.

  • A new method is presented that uses guided wave techniques for sludge and blockage detection in long-range pipelines. Existing techniques have the limitations that the sludge position needs to be known a priori and the area to be inspected needs to be accessible. A novel guided wave technique has been developed that allow the sludge or blockages to be detected remotely without the need to access the specific location where the pipe is blocked, nor to open the pipe. The technique measures the reflection of guided waves by sludge that can be used to accurately locate the blocked region. The effectiveness of the proposed technique is demonstrated and confirmed by experimental measurements.

  • Since in-core flux thimble tube wear the due to flow-induced vibration could degrade the integrity of nuclear reactor, the effective detection and interpretation of the wear is important. In order to establish an inspection technique for thimble tubes, an eddy current experiment was performed to determine the optimum test frequency, defect sensitivity and evaluation accuracy. Eddy current probes were designed and fabricated with a theory. Specimens with artificial defects were fabricated using electro discharge machining method. The results from inspection technique developed and on-site inspection showed good applicability.

  • The specific goal of this research is to develop a non-contact measurement technique of stress waves propagating in a rotating shaft. This technique will enable on-line damage detection in shafts in power-generating systems. To minimize measurement errors due to shaft rotation, we have employed magnetostrictive sensors. The sensors are not only cost-effective but also insensitive to liftoff or fill factors. Several experimental results showed the effectiveness of the present technique. The damage location in a rotating shaft was accurately predicted by the wave signal measured by the present approach.

  • An integrated damage identification system (IDIS) and system identification (SID) technique using modal information to detect damage in structures is presented. The objective is to detect damages in cracked model plate-girder without baseline modal parameters. The theory of damage localization and system identification is outlined. Experiments on a model plate-girder was described and a baseline model representing the experimental modal characteristics of the model plate-girder is updated using the system identification technique. Finally, damage inflicted in the model plate-girder is predicted using the IDIS software.

  • Many nuclear power plants have experienced unscheduled shutdown due to the leakage of steam generator tubes. The leakages are normally due to the crack, possibly stress corrosion cracking (SCC) near the tube expansion at the top of tubesheet or at the tangential point of the row-1 U-bend region. The conventional eddy current technique, which makes use of a differential bobbin coil, has been found to be inadequate for the early detection of SCC. During the in-service inspection, therefore, it is a general practice that the rotating pancake coil (RPC) is used for detecting the cracks. Even in using RPC, however, it is difficult to determine the depth of the cracks quantitatively. This paper attempts to determine the detectability and sizing ability of RPC technique for axial or circumferential cracks at the tube expansion region. The simulated cracks with various dimensions were fabricated by electro-discharge machining (EDM) method. Experimental results are discussed with theoretical calculations.

  • The reactor pressure vessel head of PWR has penetrations for control rod drive mechanism and instrumentation systems. The Primary coolant water and operating temperature can cause the stress-corrosion cracking of these nickel-based alloy penetrations. It is difficult to detect and size flaws such as SCC in the reactor head penetrations using conventional W methods because of complex geometry, Therefore, the utilities are using the TOFD technique for the detection and sizing of the flaw. This study shows the correlation between the ultrasonic wave direction and the orientation of the flaw and the range of flaw depth which can be detected by the TOFD techniques.

  • This paper has presented the parallel cyclic redundancy check (CRC) technique that performs CRC computation in parallel superior to the conventional CRC technique that processes data bits serially. Also, it has showed that the implemented parallel CRC circuit had been successfully applied to the inductively coupled passive RFID system working at a frequency of 13.56MHz in order to process the detection of logical faults more fast and the system had been verified experimentally. In comparison with previous works, the proposed RFID system using the parallel CRC technique has been shown to reduce the latency and increase the data processing rates in the results. Therefore, it seems reasonable to conclude that the parallel CRC realization in the RFID system offers a means of maintaining the integrity of data in the high speed RFID system.

  • This paper proposes lane recognition algorithm using lane prominence technique to extract lane candidate. The lane prominence technique is combined with embossing effect, lane thickness check, and lane extraction using mask. The proposed lane recognition algorithm consists of preprocessing, lane candidate extraction and lane recognition. First, preprocessing is executed, which includes gray image acquisition, inverse perspective transform and gaussian blur. Second, lane candidate is extracted by using lane prominence technique. Finally, lane is recognized by using hough transform and least square method. To evaluate the proposed lane recognition algorithm, this algorithm was applied to the detection of lanes in the rainy and night day. The experiment results showed that the proposed algorithm can recognize lane in various environment. It means that the algorithm can be applied to lane recognition to drive unmanned vehicles.

  • This paper discusses the issues regarding an abnormal V-shaped error confronting algebraic-based deconvolution process. Deconvolution was applied to an analysis of the effects of the Random Telegraph Noise (RTN) and Random Dopant Fluctuation (RDF) on the overall SRAM margin variations. This paper proposes a technique to suppress the problematic phenomena in the algebraic-based RDF/RTN deconvolution process. The proposed technique can reduce its relative errors by $10^{10}$ to $10^{16}$ fold, which is a sufficient reduction for avoiding the abnormal ringing errors in the RTN deconvolution process. The proposed algebraic-based analyses allowed the following: (1) detection of the truncating point of the TD-MV distributions by the screening test, and (2) predicting the MV-shift-amount by the assisted circuit schemes needed to avoid the out of specs after shipment.
