탁상출판이란 말 그대로 책상 머리맡에서 이루어지는 출판작업을 의미한다. 즉 컴퓨터를 이용하여 원고를 작성하고 편집하며, 인쇄작업까지도 일괄처리하는 것을 말한다. 종래의 출판과정이 얼마나 복잡하고도 많은 시간을 요구하는 수작업들로 일관되어 왔는지 일반 사용자들이 알고 있다면, 그러한 번거로운 과정들을 훌훌 털어버릴 수 있다는 사실만으로도 탁상출판의 매력을 느낄 수 있을 것이다.

[ $T_EX$ ] is a typesetting system created by Donald E. Knuth for producing publication-quality scientific books and journals. It is famous for the line breaking algorithm, the formatting of complex mathematical formula, and the powerful macro programming capability. Recently $T_EX$ plays a new role of an automatic typesetting engine. The paper describes $T_EX$ in the framework of typography by comparing with DTP softwares and word processors.

한국후지제록스(대표 정광은)는 구랍 7일 서울 중구 정동에 위치한 한국후지제록스 쇼룸에서 고객들을 대상으로 DTP(Desktop Publishing)세미나를 개최했다. 이 날 행사에는 100여명에 달하는 한국후지제록스 고객이 참석해 DTP에 대한 인쇄업계의 큰 관심을 보여 주었다. 최근 업계는 비용절감과 업무 효율성 향상을 위해 제한된 시간과 예산으로 높은 품질의 인쇄물을 제작해야 하는 과제에 직면하고 있으며, 이러한 상황에서 출판물의 디자인과 편집 작업을 직접 할 수 있고 콘텐츠의 정보 유출 방지가 가능한 DTP에 대한 업계의 니즈는 꾸준히 증가하고 있는 추세이다. 한국후지제록스의 관계자는 디자인 및 인쇄 시장 고객의 과제 해결을 지원하기 위해 이번 세미나를 개최했으며 디지털 인쇄 애플리케이션과 협력사의 다양한 DTP 솔루션 및 소프트웨어를 소개하게 되었다고 밝혔다.

Color inverse halftoning is the transformation of a color-halftone image to a continuous-tone color image that is more natural in human vision. In this paper, we propose a new smoothing mask that can remove halftone patterns in channel effectively and we apply it to color inverse halftoning. The proposed smoothing mask can make channel images more smooth and natural in human vision than traditional ones. Its characteristic can be adapted automatically according to the various color halftone images. We analyze the result images in various aspects through experiments. Experimental results show that the mask is useful for color inverse halftoning. It can be applied to field of multimedia application, such as desktop publishing, color facsimile and digital library construction.

At present, the electronic document is being processed in WYSWYG mode. For this, a document is structured by the logical structure and the physical structure, and is presented by the markup language. After XML is announced, an application scope of the electronic document is extended from interchanging to searching. However, in point of output quality, a XML document image on a browser has lower quality than a general document image on desktop publishing. The reason is which output function of a browser has not capability for high quality printing. The W3C developed XSL-FO(XSL-formatting Object) for style sheet formatting and PDL(Page Description Language) as like Postscript is already developed and used widely. In this paper, we designed the Postscript-Converter to get a high quality document image by converting XSL-FO into Postscript format.
