  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the fad dieting status and needs of nutrition education on healthy dieting in male and female collegians according to the desired loss weight. The subjects were 611 students (287 males, 324 females) from universities in Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces in Korea. The subjects were divided into the following four groups based on the difference between their current body weight and their desired body weight: no desired weight loss (WL0), desired weight loss less than 5 kg (WL5), desired weight loss 6 to 10 kg (WL10), and desired weight loss more than 11 kg (WL11). The fad dieting status was surveyed using a questionnaire about 11 selected trendy dieting methods. The higher desired weight loss group showed higher current weight and BMI in both males and females. Self weight overestimation was higher in the females than in the males, and in the WL10 group than in the other groups of males. As desired loss weight increased, weight loss trials and experienced trendy dieting types increased in both males and females. In the male subjects, the experience of the half meal diet and the chicken breast diet was significantly associated with the desired loss weight. In females, trials of more trendy diet types including the half meal diet, cereal diet, fasting, and Atkins diet were significantly associated with the higher desired loss weight. The need for nutrition education on healthy dieting was high among all the different desired weight loss groups, showing that a minimum of 60% of subjects in each group answered 'necessary and strongly necessary', with the highest in the WL11 group in both males and females. From these results, desired loss weight is associated with higher current weight status, unhealthy weight control practices, and needs for nutrition education in both male and female subjects. Therefore, in the future, nutrition education programs should give greater attention to providing healthy dieting methods for young collegians who desire more weight loss.

  • Among current health-related issues, obesity is considered one of the foremost, and the importance of this subject has fostered a national interest in body weight loss. In this study, the differences in recognition of body weight loss according to age and gender are investigated. The subjects of the study were 720 (male: 360 and female: 360) aged between 10-60 years, who had experienced to try body weight loss during 6 months prior to this study. Anthropometrics, general characteristics, personal reasons for body weight loss, comprehension of body weight loss, and a knowledge of diet-related issues were assessed through a questionnaire. The anthropometric measurements showed significant differences in height, body weight (present and desired) and BMI (p < 0.05) by age and gender. The difference between desired body weight and actual body weight was greater for younger subjects or female, regardless of whether they had under- or normal body weight (p < 0.05). Reasons for body weight loss varied; younger subjects and female tended to lose body weight "to enhance their appearances", whereas the older subjects and male desired "to improve their health" (p < 0.05). Subjects had different concepts concerning body weight loss; younger subjects and female considered body weight loss as "maintenance of a slender figure, or becoming more lean". On the other hand, older subjects and male thought body weight loss to be "effects approaching normal body weight" (p < 0.05). From our studies, it can be concluded that attitude on concerning body weight loss varied according to a age and gender. Thus, consideration of this individual differences would be vital in developing contents of a particular nutritional education program for body weight loss.

  • The use of VPI impregnated mica tape as high voltage insulation for large rotating electric machines requires a careful balance of processes and materials to obtain the desired electrical, mechanical and thermal characteristics. The stator insulation systems such as epoxy bonded high voltage mica tape have been produced for many years. One such system employing an epoxy and anhydride impregnating resin developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries, Co. (hereafter, HHI), to satisfy customer requests for an epoxy bonded insulation system. HHI applies the following electrical and thermal evaluations such as dielectric breakdown, voltage endurance, dissipation factor vs. temperature, isothermal weight loss, and so on. A detailed laboratory evaluation can describe specific physical limitations for an insulation system and permit development of long-term operation guidelines that permit full utilization of the proposed system. HHI has found these evaluations very helpful in qualifying insulation system for the repair of both large motors and generators.

  • N-(Isopropyloxycarbonyloxy)maleimide (iPOCMI) has been synthesized and polymerized to give both the homopolymer and copolymers with substituted styrenes. These polymers were readily deprotected by thermolysis of the isopropyloxycarbonyl (iPOC) groups to provide the corresponding N-hydroxymaleimide (HOMI) polymers. The homopolymer and styrenic copolymers of iPOCMI were radically obtained in higher conversion and higher molecular weight than those obtained by direct polymerizations of N-hydroxymaleimide. The homopolymer of iPOCMI was transformed into poly(N-hydroxymaleimide)P(HOMI) by thermolysis of iPOC groups at 205 $^{\circ}C$ with concurrent release of propene and carbon dioxide. The copolymer of iPOCMI and styrene was thermally deprotected to the copolymer of HOMI and styrene at 235 $^{\circ}C.$ The mass loss was 28% and the Tg of the resulting copolymer was 250 $^{\circ}C.$ The thermal deprotection readily provided the desired, polar HOMI polymers which have Tgs above 240 $^{\circ}C.$ The deprotection was accompanied by large changes in aqueous base solubility.

  • A study was done on the synthesis of new poly(arylene ether)s and poly(arylenesulfide) with rigid benzoxazole pendants using nucleophilic aromatic substitution reaction. As a new aromatic monomer, 1,4-bis(2-benzox-azolyl)-2,5-difluorobenzene [I] w as synthesized in three steps starting from 1,4-dibromo-2,5-difluorobenzene. A model reaction of difluoro monomer [I] with two equivalents of m-cresol or thiophenol in a typical ether con-densation reaction conditions gave very high yields ( > 93%) of the desired disubstituted product, suggesting the feasibility of polymer formation in these reaction system. Monomer[I] was polymerized with bisphenols and bisbenzenethiol in NMP using K2CO3 as base. The molecular weight of the resulting polymers, however, seemed relatively low according to their solution viscosity values ( ηinh = 0.15-0.29 dL/g). The poly(arylene ether)s were soluble in several common organic solvents including chloroform, pyridine and N,N'-dimethylfor-mamide. The poly(arylene sulfide) was, however, ony soluble in strong acids like sulfuric acid and trifluoro-acetic acid. The glass transition temperatures were found to be 175-215 $^{\circ}C.$ These polymers were stable up to 380-420 $^{\circ}C$ in both nitrogen and air, as determined by the temperature that a significant weight loss began to appear on TGA.

  • The kinetic coefficients far decomposition of the cured phenol resin (SC-1008) using a modified Arrhenius relationship have been determined from thermogavimetric analyses (TGA). The kinetic parameters were determined by multiple heating rate technique developed by Freideman and Henderson. Weight loss (decomposition) and weight loss rate (decomposition rate)were measured and recorded for three heating rates; $5^{\circ}C$/min ,$10^{\circ}C$/min, and $20^{\circ}C$/min. Relatively good agreement was obtained between measured and calculated decomposition as a function of temperature. By separating the reaction, the reaction order and pre exponential factor become empirical parameters which provide a "best fit" of the data. However, this method yields an extremely accurate reproduction of the thermograms over a wide range of heating rates. This is the desired result for kinetic parameters used in thermal models.al models.

  • A concept of household container to create and keep the modified atmosphere (MA) beneficial for fresh produce mix was devised and tested under typical chilled storage conditions of 3℃. The container system containing mixed products is initialized by applying weak hypobaric condition (0.9 atm) and subsequently injecting CO2 gas at an appropriate low level (0.03 atm). The passive atmosphere modification by produce respiration is then induced to reach a target until gas diffusion tube of proper dimension starts to open. The design was made to attain quasi-steady state mass balance of O2, CO2 and N2 to maintain the desired MA through the storage. Interrupted opening for taking out or placing some products was to reinitialize the loop of control logic. The developed concept was tested by the container which held commodities of spinach, pak choi, oyster mushroom, peeled onion, strawberry and cut carrot. The target optimum MA of 11% O2 and 10% CO2 (0.11 and 0.10 atm, respectively) was set to avoid injurious range of O2 and CO2 concentrations for any commodities. The developed container system could work to reach and maintain beneficial MA of 0.10-0.12 atm O2 and 0.07-0.10 atm CO2 close to the target during the storage contributing to quality retention of products measured in weight loss, chlorophyll content of spinach, ascorbic acid content of pak choi, color of onion, texture of oyster mushroom, bacterial count of strawberry and carotenoids of carrot. The container system shows potential to improve current preservation practice of fresh produce mix on consumers' level.
