  • Recently frequent occurrences of heavy rainfall and increases of rainfall intensity resulted in severe flood damage in Korea. In order to mitigate the vulnerability of flood, it is necessary to estimate proper design rainfalls considering the increasing trend of extreme rainfalls for hydrologic planning and design. This study focused the estimation of design rainfalls in a design target year. Tests of trend indicated that there are 7 sites showing increasing trends among 56 sites which have hourly data more than 30 years in Korea. This study analyzed the relationship between mean of annual maximum rainfalls and parameters of the Gumbel distribution. Based on the relationship, this study estimated the probability density function and design rainfalls in a design target year, and then constructed the rainfall-frequency curve. The proposed method estimated the design rainfalls 6-20% higher than those from the stationary rainfall frequency analysis.

  • Due to recent heavy rain events, there are increasing demands for adapting infrastructure design, including drainage facilities in urban basins. Therefore, a clear definition of urban rainfall must be provided; however, currently, such a definition is unavailable. In this study, urban rainfall is defined as a rainfall event that has the potential to cause water-related disasters such as floods and landslides in urban areas. Moreover, based on design rainfall, these disasters are defined as those that causes excess design flooding due to certain rainfall events. These heavy rain scenarios require that the design of various urban rainfall facilities consider design rainfall in the target years of their life cycle, for disaster prevention. The average frequency of heavy rain in each region, inland and coastal areas, was analyzed through a frequency analysis of the highest annual rainfall in the past year. The potential change in future rainfall intensity changes the service level of the infrastructure related to hand-to-hand construction; therefore, the target year and design rainfall considering the climate change premium were presented. Finally, the change in dimensional safety according to the RCP8.5 climate change scenario was predicted.

  • Purpose - This paper shows an unexplored area related to involuntary delisting. Specifically, this research investigates the effect of target firm information asymmetry on the likelihood that the acquirer or newly merged firm will be forcibly delisted post-merger. Design/methodology/approach - The research uses a sample gathered on local US mergers and acquisitions from the Thomson Reuters Securities Data Company (SDC) Platinum Mergers and Acquisitions database. It applies the logistic regression with industry and year effects and corrects the error term using clustering at the industry level. The research also matches the forced delisted firms to control firms based on industry, acquisition completion year, and firm size and then employs a matched sample analysis. Findings - Findings show that M&As between firms where the target firm is opaque and burdened with high information asymmetry issues are likely to be paid for using majority stock and that M&As involving such opaque targets also have a higher likelihood of getting delisted post-merger. Research implications or Originality - Our results are relevant given the very nature of M&As which involve two players: the acquirer and target who both may have different incentives. Acquirers especially have the tendency to suffer losses and even get delisted if they over-pay for or get merged to a poor target which conceals its poor performance evidenced by higher accruals quality.

  • Recently, increasing heavy rainfalls due to climate change and/or variability result in hydro-climatic disasters being accelerated. To cope with the extreme rainfall events in the future, hydrologic frequency analysis is usually used to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year. The rainfall data series applied to the hydrologic frequency analysis is assumed to be stationary. However, recent observations indicate that the data series might not preserve the statistical properties of rainfall in the future. This study incorporated the residual analysis and the hydrologic frequency analysis to estimate design rainfalls in a design target year considering the non-stationarity of rainfall. The residual time series were generated using a linear regression line constructed from the observations. After finding the proper probability density function for the residuals, considering the increasing or decreasing trend, rainfalls quantiles were estimated corresponding to specific design return periods in a design target year. The results from applying the method to 14 gauging stations indicate that the proposed method provides appropriate design rainfalls and reduces the prediction errors compared with the conventional rainfall frequency analysis which assumes that the rainfall data are stationary.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the research trend through content analysis of the previous researches on wayfinding issues in the field of spatial design in Korea. Total 91 research articles published in domestic academic journals from 1991 to 2015 were collected through the online search and analyzed using descriptive statistics. As conceptual framework for content analysis, research article publication year, academic field based on journal title, research methodology, target space for analysis, and type of research purpose were included. The major findings were as follows. Substantially, wayfinding research in Korea was begun in 1990s and was peaked in the latter half of 2010s. Healthcare facilities including hospitals and nursing homes were most frequently analyzed as target space, i.e., research subject. Majority of the researches analyzed were published in the diverse journals of design area. In many cases, qualitative research methods such as spatial construction analysis using Space Syntax, field study, observation, interview, etc were used by the researchers frequently. It was found that the majority of researchers focused on behavioral and psychological response of space users in the process of wayfinding. For further study, it is recommended to extend the scope of analysis to sign system which support effective wayfinding. In addition, foreign academic journal articles should be included for in-depth analysis.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to check the direction of KODISA's pursuit of complex and convergence studies by confirming the research trends of KODISA's direct academic journals such as JDS, JIDB, JBEES and JAFEB. To this end, we tried to compare and confirm the research trends of the papers in four academic journals targeting keywords. Research Design, data and methodology: The analysis was conducted from 2014 to 2020 on 867 papers from JDS, 315 papers from JIDB, 120 papers from JBEES, and 867 papers based on the publication year of the most recently published journal from JAFEB. For the analysis, frequency analysis, word crowding, topic modeling, and frequency analysis by applying weights for each year group were performed on the keywords crawled using Python. Results: The results of frequency analysis showed that each journal is properly oriented toward its target direction. In addition, it was confirmed that the results of topic modeling significantly reflected the results of frequency analysis. Finally, it could be concluded that the results of frequency analysis using the weights of keywords by year group were also developing in the direction the target journals were analyzed. Specifically, in the case of JDS, 20 keywords such as Service Quality, Distribution were found to increase continuously according to the year group. Meanwhile, the keywords that continued to increase according to JIDB's year group were India, Social Capital, and Job Stress. The keywords that continued to increase according to the year group of JBEES were Micro Finance Institutions and Microfinance, and the keywords that of JAFEB were confirmed to be Vietnam and Service Quality. Conclusion: It was confirmed that KODISA's direct management journals responded appropriately to convergence issues. In particular, it was confirmed that researches in various fields of JDS are continuously increasing. However, it seems that JIDB needs to deal with various issues additionally in the service industry field and JBEES in the environment field. Finally, it was found that JAFEB needs to be wary of the relatively low level of interest in some countries such as Kazakhstan and India in recent years.

  • In an effort to preserve biodiversity in increasingly fragmented green patches, Korea has been installing eco-corridors over or under some arterial or expressways. In a survey of 43 such eco-corridors installed up until the year 2003, some problems and issues were identified. Some selected overseas eco-corridors were also investigated to find implications for the improvements of future installations in Korea. Major findings are; - For most existing eco-corridors, target species are not specified and locations of the eco-corridors are not well considered, and consequently it is questionable if wildlifes are crossing them - Most of existing eco-corridors lack supporting facilities such as fences that guide wildlife to cross them and prevent them from running into the road - Planting on the eco-corridors is not sufficient, not diverse enough in species, and not very considerate of wildlife but designed and planted in a similar manner as in urban parks - Where target species are not well specified, the location, width, cross section, and other aspects of the eco-corridors can not be optimized - It is suggested that eco-corridors are planned at early stages of road planning so that the number and locations of eco-corridor(s) decided as necessary and even the alignment and design of roads consider the installation of eco-corridors in advance - Monitoring of wildlife crossings is needed for improved eco-corridor planning and design - Nationwide green network plan is desirable to be made first and eco-corridors fit into it.
