This study was attempted to provide some fundamental data for safety structrural design of biological production facility. Wind load and snow load, acting on agricultural structures is working more sensitive than any other load. Therefore, wind speed and snow depth according to return periods for design load estimation were calculated by frequency analysis using the weather data(maximum instantaneous wind speed, maximum wind speed, maximum depth of snow cover and fall) of 68 regions in Korea. Equations for estimating maximum instantaneous wind speed with maximum wind speed were developed for all, inland and seaside regions. The results were about the same as the current eqution in general. Design wind speed and snow depth according to return periods were calculated and Local design wind load and snow load depending on return periods were presented together with iso-wind speed and iso-snow depth maps. The calculated design snow depth by maximum depth of snow cover were higher than design snow depth by maximum depth of snow fall. Considering wind speed and snow depth, protected cultivation is very difficult in Ullungdo, Gangwon seaside and contiguity inland regions, and strong structural design is needed in the west-south seaside against wind speed, and structure design of biological production facility in these regions need special consideration.
Wind load or snow load, acting on agricultural structures is working more sensitive than any other load and therefore plays an important role in determination of design loads of agricultural structures. In this study, unit snow weight, greatest gust speed and depth of snow fall were analyzed and applied to determine the amount of frames. The unit snow weights were statistically classified and calculated in the basis of mean temperature and showed considerable differences between the unit snow weights at below and above -1$^{\circ}C$. Equations for estimating greatest gust speed with fastest wind speed were developed for inland and seaside districts. The calculated values from developed equations were little higher than those from the current equation in general. The difference between the depths of snow cover and snow fall, which shows the possibility of reduction of design loads under the adequate management. Design wind speed estimated by a modified equation suggested the amount of frames less than those by current one, and the depth of snow fall as a design snow depth suggested the amount of frames more than those of snow cover. Therefore, it is very important to select the adequate design values considering the characteristics of agricultural structures.
Due to the complexity and difficulty in meeting the multiphase flow complexity, similarity, and multiscale characteristics, the mechanism of snow drift is so complicated that the snow deposition prediction is still inaccurate and needs to be far improved. Meanwhile, the validation of prediction methods is also limited due to a lack of field-measured data about snow deposition. To this end, a field measurement activity about snow deposition around a cube with time was carried out, and the snow accumulation process was measured under blowing snow conditions in northwest China. The maximum snow depth, snow profile, and variation in snow depth around the cube were discussed and analyzed. The measured results indicated three stages of snow accumulation around the cube. First, snow is deposited in windward, lateral and leeward regions, and then the snow depth in windward and lateral regions increases. Secondly, when the snow in the windward region reaches its maximum, the downwash flow erodes the snow against the front wall. Meanwhile, snow range and depth in lateral regions have a significant increase. Thirdly, a narrow road in the leeward region is formed with the increase in snow range and depth, which results in higher wind speed and reforming snow deposition there. The field measurement study in this paper not only furthers understanding of the snow accumulation process instead of final deposition under complex conditions but also provides an important benchmark for validating prediction methods.

Due to recent increasing heavy snow in Korea, the damage caused by heavy snow is also increasing. In Korea, there are many efforts including establishing disaster prevention measures to reduce the damage throughout the country, but it is difficult to establish the design criteria due to the characteristics of heavy snow. In this study, snowfall frequency analysis was performed to estimate design snow depths using observed snow depth data at Jinju, Changwon and Hapcheon stations. The conventional frequency analysis is sometime limted to apply to the snow depth data containing zero values which produce unrealistc estimates of distributon parameters. To overcome this problem, this study employed mixed distributions based on Lognormal, Generalized Pareto (GP), Generalized Extreme Value (GEV), Gamma, Gumbel and Weibull distribution. The results show that the mixed distributions produced smaller design snow depths than single distributions, which indicated that the mixed distributions are applicable and practical to estimate design snow depths.

This study is to analyze the heavy snowfall vulnerable area of snow load design criteria for greenhouse, cattle shed and building using ground measured snow depth data and Terra MODIS snow cover area(SCA). To analyze the heavy snowfall vulnerable area, Terra MODIS satellite images for 12 years(2001-2012) were used to obtain the characteristics of snow depth and snow cover areas respectively. By comparing the snow load design criteria for greenhouse(cm), cattle shed($kg/m^2$), and building structure($kN/m^2$) with the snow depth distribution results by Terra MODIS satellite images, the facilities located in Jeolla-do, Chungcheong-do, and Gangwon-do areas were more vulnerable to exceed the current design criteria.

To prevent and mitigate damage to farms due to heavy snowfall, snow weight information should be provided in addition to snow depth. This study reviews four formulae regarding snow density and weight used in extant studies and applies them in Suwon area to estimate snow weight in Korea. We investigated the observed snow depth of 94 meteorological stations and automatic weather stations (AWS) data over the past 30 years (1988-2017). Based on the spatial distribution of snow depth by area in Korea, much of the fresh snow cover, due to heavy snowfall, occurred in Jeollabuk-do and Gangwon-do. Record snowfalls occurred in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gangwon-do. However, the most recent heavy snowfall in winter occurred in Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Jeollanam-do. This implies that even if the snow depth is high, there is no significant damage unless the snow weight is high. The estimation of snow weight in Suwon area yielded different results based on the calculation method of snow density. In general, high snow depth is associated with heavy snow weight. However, maximum snow weight and maximum snow depth do not necessarily occur on the same day. The result of this study can be utilized to estimate the snow weight at other locations in Korea and to carry out snow weight prediction based on a numerical model. Snow weight information is expected to aid in establishing standards for greenhouse design and to reduce the economic losses incurred by farms.
This study was attemped to provide some fundamental data for the safety structural design of biological production facility. Wind speed and snow depth according to recurrence intervals for design load estimation were calculated by frequency analysis using the weather data of 60 stations in Korea. The following results were obtained : 1. Type-I extremal distribution was selected for the probability density function of yearly maximum wind speed and snow depth and result of Chi-square goodness of fit showed highly significance at most regions. 2. Design frequency factors for given number of samples and recurrence intervals were calculated, and also design wind speed and snow depth as shown in Table 5-Table 6 and Fig.3-Fig.4 were derived. 3. About 46.4% of the winds having maximum wind speed at every station was analyzed to be same direction, and the consideration of this fact may improve the structural safety. 4. Considering wind speed and snow depth, protected cultivation is very difficult in Ullungdo and the Youngdong districts, and strong structural design is needed in the Chungnam and Junbuk west seaside against snow depth and the west-south seaside against wind speed in Korea.
The snow melting system by electric heating wires which is adopted in this study is a part of road facilities to keep surface temperature of the road higher than freezing point of water for melting the snow accumulated on it. The system is designed to increase traffic safety and capacity. The electric heating wires are buried under paved road at a certain depth and operated automatically and manually. Design theory, amount of heating, and installation standard vary according to economic situation, weather condition, and installation place where the system applies. It is tried to figure out that the appropriate range of required heat capacity and installation depth and intervals for solving snowdrifts and freezing problems with the minimum electric power consumption. The most important factors to design the system are calculation of heating capacity depending on weather condition and depth and interval of the electric heating wires depending on air condition respectively. The study were performed under the range of the air temperatures($-2^{\circ}C,\;-5^{\circ}C,\;-8^{\circ}C$), the intervals of the electric heating wires(70mm, 100mm, 125mm), and the installation depths(50mm, 70mm, 100mm). The ready made commercial program package was used to verify the experimental results.

As the weather changes become frequent, weather disasters are increasing, causing more damage to plastic greenhouses. Among the damage caused by various disasters, damage by snow to the greenhouse takes a relatively long time, so if an alarm system is properly prepared, the damage can be reduced. Existing greenhouse design standards and snow warning systems are based on snow depth. However, even in the same depth, the load on the greenhouse varies depending on meteorological characteristics and snow density. Therefore, this study aims to secure the structural safety of greenhouses by developing sensors that can directly measure snow loads, and analysing the warning criteria for load using a stochastic model. Markov chain was applied to estimate the failure probability of various types of greenhouses in various regions, which let users actively cope with heavy snowfall by selecting an appropriate time to respond. Although it was hard to predict the precise snow depth or amounts, it could successfully assess the risk of structures by directly detecting the snow load using the developed sensor.

In order to set up structural improvement strategy against meteorological disasters of the shading structures in ginseng fields, structural safety analyses as well as some case studies of structural damage patterns were carried out. According to the results of structural safety analysis, allowable safe snow depth for type B(wood frame with single span) was 25.9 cm, and those for type A(wood frame with multi span) and type C and D (steel frame with multi span) were 17.6 cm, 25.8 cm, and 20.0 cm respectively. So types of shading structures should be selected according to the regional design snow depth. An experiential example study on meteorological disasters indicated that a strong wind damage was experienced once every 20 years, and a heavy snow damage once every 9.5 years. The most serious disasters were caused by heavy snow and it was found that a half break and complete collapse of structures were experienced by about 70% of snow damage. In addition to maintenance, repair and reinforcement, it is also recommended that improved model of shading structures for ginseng cultivation should be developed as a long term countermeasures against meteorological disasters.
