  • Nuclear power plants play a pivotal role in the global energy infrastructure, fulfilling a substantial share of the world's energy requirements in a sustainable way. The management of these facilities, especially the handling of spent nuclear fuel (SNF), necessitates meticulous inspections to guarantee operational safety and efficiency. However, the prevailing inspection methodologies lean heavily on human operators, which presents challenges due to the potential hazards of the SNF environment. This study introduces the design of a novel Pre-Batched Inspection Strategy (PBIS) that integrates robotic automation and image processing techniques to bolster the inspection process. This methodology deploys robotics to undertake tasks that could be perilous or time-intensive for humans, while image processing techniques are used for precise identification of SNF targets and regulating the robotic system. The implementation of PBIS holds considerable promise in minimizing inspection time and enhancing worker safety. This paper elaborates on the structure, capabilities, and application of PBIS, underlining its potential implications for the future of nuclear energy inspections.

  • Quantum information technology is driving innovative computing, communication, and sensing advancements. High-performance tunable lasers have become essential tools for precisely controlling and manipulating qubits. These lasers provide high stability and accuracy at specific wavelengths, enabling efficient control of various types of qubit systems, such as ions, neutral atoms, and defects. High-performance tunable lasers allow the initialization of qubit states, execution of quantum gate operations, and minimization of errors during the readout process. In addition, tunable lasers are critical in precisely regulating the interactions between multiple qubits to optimize quantum entanglement and correlation. This study explores the existing and state-of-the-art technologies related to the design and implementation of high-performance tunable lasers in the visible and near-infrared wavelength ranges that are crucial for key material systems used in quantum technology. Based on this investigation, we present new methodologies for maximizing the scalability of qubit control. These laser technologies are expected to contribute to the commercialization and performance enhancement of quantum information technology, a common foundational technology.

  • Purpose - This study provides an overview of existing research and practices related to market risk premiums(MRP), and empirically estimates the MRP in Korea, particularly using the related option prices. We also seek to improve the current MRP practices and explore alternative solutions. Design/methodology/approach - We present the option price-based MRP estimation method, as proposed by Martin (2017), and implement it within the context of the Korean stock market. We then juxtapose these results with those derived from other methods, and compare the characteristics with those of the United States. Findings - We found that the lower limit of the MRP in the Korean stock market shows a much lower value compared to the US. There seems to be the possibility of a market crash, exchange rate volatility, or a lack of option trading data. We investigated the predictive power of the estimated values and discovered that the weighted average of the results of various methodologies using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is superior to the individual method's results. Research implications or Originality - It is required to explore various methods of estimating MRP that are suitable for the Korean stock market. In order to improve the estimation methodology based on option prices, it is necessary to develop the methods using the higher-order(third order or above) moments, or consider additional risk factors such as the possibility of a crash.

  • This research paper explores the integration of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-based remote sensing survey methods, specifically LiDAR and photogrammetry, into the measurement and payment processes of beach fill construction projects managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The primary objective is to evaluate the feasibility, accuracy, and cost-effectiveness of UAV technology in contrast to traditional topographic and hydrographic survey methods. The methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, case studies, accuracy standard assessments, and a detailed cost comparison between conventional and UAV-based survey techniques. The findings reveal that UAV-based remote sensing can offer significant improvements in terms of efficiency and cost savings. UAVs are capable of capturing large data volumes quickly with reduced manpower and equipment needs. However, the accuracy of UAV surveys is contingent upon environmental conditions and the proper staging of control points. Moreover, the initial investment and operational costs of UAV equipment are substantial and warrant further analysis. The paper argues for flexibility in measurement and payment methodologies during the project design phase to accommodate UAV technology. While environmental conditions may occasionally necessitate traditional survey methods, the study suggests that regions like the Florida Peninsula, with clearer water and more favorable weather, are particularly well-suited for the implementation of UAV-based surveys. The significance of this study lies in its potential to guide future beach fill construction projects, promoting more efficient and cost-effective survey methods while adhering to accuracy standards and environmental considerations.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze reports of qualitative studies published in Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing (JKAN) and Asian Nursing Research (ANR) and to determine explicit suggestions to improve the quality of qualitative papers. Methods: A total of 106 qualitative studies published in JKAN and ANR from 2008 to 2017 was reviewed using consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ). Results: In the research team and reflexivity, there was a lack of description in relationship building with participants and for researcher assumptions. Regarding study design, pilot tests for interview guideline development and revision of a transcript for clarity were less reported than other items. For analysis and findings, descriptions of number of data coders and diverse cases were insufficient. Conclusion: We suggest that researchers consider and describe COREQ items in more detail when reporting qualitative research. Also, although COREQ are guidelines for reporting qualitative studies, they do not reflect the characteristics of all such research methodologies. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a systematic evaluation standard including questions reflecting the characteristics of each qualitative research methodology to contribute to improvement of qualitative research.

  • Until recently Korea is considered to be immune from the earthquake hazard because it is located for away from the active fault. However, we have noticed that recent strong earthquakes inflicted enormous losses on human lives and nation's economy all over the world. Hence, there has been raised the importance of the earthquake resistant design for various infrastructures. In this research, new methodologies for the seismic design and performance assessment of reinforced concrete(RC) bridge pier were proposed from experimental results of 82 circular RC bridge piers and 54 rectangular RC bridge piers tested in domestic and aboard. New seismic design method was based on the concept of the limited ductile design, which could be practically used for low or moderate seismic regions like Korea. Further study for the seismic safety of RC bridge piers was carried out to enhance the seismic performance of aged RC bridge piers, which were designed and constructed before implementing the 1992 seismic design provision in Korea. New formula for the seismic performance assessment of RC bridge piers was proposed and practically used for the decision on the need of repair and retrofit of many aged RC bridge piers.

  • As the spread of COVID19 has compelled activities in various fields to transform to adapt to the non-face-to-face environment, various activities have either already been transitioned into non-face-to-face methods or been searching for alternative methods to carry out activities in a non-face-to-face manner. However, there are apparent limits in handling this transition with the pre-existing digital technology. Ironically, said limitations are more apparent in the UX design field that has thus far emphasized resolutions based on digital technology. The reason for this stems from the nature of UX design which strongly emphasizes the importance of collaboration. Especially, in the field of UX design, problems are expected to surface under areas of communication and collaboration in workshops, which are productive means of collecting the ideas of interested parties and coming up with other new ideas. Based on the aforementioned rise of necessity, this study aims to assess the characteristics of workshops in the field of UX design and suggest an effective method of transitioning UX workshops into a non-face-to-face environment. Along the line of this process, this study has created a standard process in regards to design workshops with active creation, suggestion, and acceptance of ideas, among the various types of workshops defined by the Nielsen Norman Group. This study also developed a framework consisting of non-face-to-face workshops by combining with the standard process the methodologies of workshop activation and non-face-to-face services meant for communication and designing activities, and confirmed the adaptability and the effectiveness of said transition against various types of workshops. Application of the results of this study is expected to effectively lead the transition into the non-face-to-face environment and improve the collaborative efforts of the interested parties via workshops.
