Lateral stiffness of corner-supported steel modular frame with splice connection

  • This paper proposes a comprehensive investigation on lateral stiffness of corner-supported steel modular frame using splice connection. A full-scale modular frame with two stacked steel modules under lateral load is tested. Ductile pattern in the transfer of lateral load is found in the final failure mode. Two types of lateral stiffness, including tangent stiffness and secant stiffness, are defined from the load-displacement due to the observed nonlinearity. The difference between these two types of stiffness is found around 20%. The comparisons between the experimental lateral stiffness and the predictions of classical methods are also conducted. The D-value method using hypothesis of independent case is a conservative option for predicting lateral stiffness, which is more recommended than method of contraflexural bending moment. Analyses on two classical short-rod models, including fix-rod model and pin-rod model, are further conducted. Results indicate that fix-rod model is more recommended than pin-rod model to simplify splice connection for simulation on lateral stiffness of modular frame in elastic design stage.

Riser Configuration Design for a 15-MW Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Integrated with a Green Hydrogen Facility

  • Green hydrogen presents a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for clean energy production and transportation. This study aims to identify the optimal profile of green hydrogen transportation risers originating from a floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) integrated with a hydrogen production facility. Employing the Cummins equation, a fully coupled dynamic analysis for FOWT with a flexible riser was conducted, with the tower, mooring lines, and risers described using a lumped mass line model. Initially, motion response amplitude operators (RAOs) were compared with openly published results to validate the numerical model for the FOWT. Subsequently, a parametric study was conducted on the length of the buoyancy module section and the upper bare section of the riser by comparing the riser's tension and bending moment. The results indicated that as the length of the buoyancy module increases, the maximum tension of the riser decreases, while it increases with the lengthening of the bare section. Furthermore, shorter buoyancy modules are expected to experience less fatigue damage, with the length of the bare section having a relatively minor impact on this phenomenon. Consequently, to ensure safety under extreme environmental conditions, both the upper bare section and the buoyancy module section should be relatively short.

Biaxial Interaction and Load Contour Method for Reinforced Concrete C- and H-shaped Structural Walls (C형 및 H형 철근콘크리트 구조벽체의 2축 상호작용과 등하중법)

  • Nonplanar structural walls with C-shaped and H-shaped sections have been used as an efficient lateral force-resisting system for building structures. Since the nonplanar walls are subjected to axial load and bending moments about two orthogonal axes, complicated section analysis is required for flexure-compression design. In the present study, a straightforward design method for biaxially loaded C- and H-shaped walls was proposed by modifying the existing load contour method for columns with symmetric solid sections. For this, a strain compatibility section analysis program that can calculate biaxial moment strengths of arbitrary wall section was developed and its validity was verified by comparing with existing test results. Then, through parametric study, the interaction of biaxial moments at constant axial loads in prototype C- and H-shaped walls was investigated. The results showed that, due to unsymmetrical geometry of the wall sections, the biaxial interaction was significantly affected by the moment directions and axial loads. From those investigations, non-dimensional contour equations of the biaxial moments at constant axial loads for C- and H-shaped walls were suggested. Further, design examples using the proposed contour equations were given for engineering practice.

A Study on Inelastic Lateral-Torsional Buckling of Stepped I-Beams Subjected to Pure Bending (균일모멘트를 받는 계단식 I형보의 비탄성 횡-비틀림 좌굴에 관한 연구)

  • The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2006) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to pure bending moment and resulted in the development of design equations. The flanges of the smaller cross-section were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and/or thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of beam was kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beams are considered analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 35 cases, respectively, were analyzed for double and single stepped beams. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi, etc (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic LTB problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design. The proposed solutions can be easily used to develop new design equation for inelastic LTB resistance of stepped beams subjected to general loading condition such as a concentrated load, a series of concentrated loads or uniformly distributed load.

A Study on the Optimal Limit State Design of Reinforced Concrete Flat Slab-Column Structures (한계상태설계법(限界狀態設計法)에 의한 철근(鐵筋)콘크리트 플래트 슬라브형(型) 구조체(構造體)의 최적화(最適化)에 관한 연구(研究))

  • The aim of this study is to establish a synthetical optimal method that simultaneously analyze and design reinforced concrete flat slab-column structures involving multi-constraints and multi-design variables. The variables adopted in this mathematical models consist of design variables including sectional sizes and steel areas of frames, and analysis variable of the ratio of bending moment redistribution. The cost function is taken as the objective function in the formulation of optimal problems. A number of constraint equations, involving the ultimate limit state and the serviceability limit state, is derived in accordance with BSI CP110 requirements on the basis of limit state design theory. Both objective function and constraint equations derived from design variables and an analysis variable generally become high degree nonlinear problems. Using SLP as an analytical method of nonlinear optimal problems, an optimal algorithm is developed so as to analyze and design the structures considered in this study. The developed algorithm is directly applied to a few reinforced concrete flat slab-column structures to assure the validity of it and the possibility of optimization From the research it is found that the algorithm developed in this study is applicable to the optimization of reinforced concrete flat slab column structures and it converges to a optimal solution with 4 to 6 iterations regardless of initial variables. The result shows that an economical design can be possible when compared with conventional designs. It is also found that considering the ratio of bending moment redistribution as a variable is reasonable. It has a great effect on the composition of optimal sections and the economy of structures.

A Numerical Study on Inelastic lateral Torsional Buckling Strength of Doubly Stepped and Singly Symmetric I-Beam Subjected to Uniform Moment (균일모멘트가 작용하는 일축대칭 I형 양단 스텝보의 비탄성 횡-비틀림 좌굴에 관한 해석적 연구)

This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams subjected to pure bending. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS and a regression program were used to analytically develop new design equation. The flange thickness ratio, flange width ratio and stepped length ratio were considered as parameters of this study. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometric imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The proposed solution can be easily used to calculation for inelastic lateral torsional buckling strengths of monosymmetric beams with doubly stepped cross sections and to develop new design equations for inelastic lateral-torsional buckling resistances of stepped beams.

Experimental Research on Structural Behaviour of the Wing Wall Attached Columns (날개벽이 붙는 기둥의 구조적 거동에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • A lot of structures built since 1988 do not have efficient seismic design. Current buildings have complex shaped walls where the wing wall system is a popular option. When the wing wall is attached to a column, or a short span is produced due to the wing wall system, the system affects the behaviour of the column such as by increasing the strength and decreasing the ductility of the members. These members affect the structural behaviour of the columns and destruction aspect as the investigation on the damage of the previous earthquakes indicates. To prevent such case, current design installs structural silt on the wing wall to consider the columns and insulating so that it does not affect the internal forces. Calculations for internal shear force and internal bending moment of the vertical members are considered an important matter in design, but currently Korea does not have any studies on the effects of the wing wall on the columns.

Compressive and flexural behaviors of ultra-high strength concrete encased steel members

  • One way to achieve sustainable construction is to reduce concrete consumption by use of more sustainable and higher strength concrete. Modern building codes do not cover the use of ultra-high strength concrete (UHSC) in the design of composite structures. Against such background, this paper investigates experimentally the mechanical properties of steel fibre-reinforced UHSC and then the structural behaviors of UHSC encased steel (CES) members under both concentric and eccentric compressions as well as pure bending. The effects of steel-fibre dosage and spacing of stirrups were studied, and the applicability of Eurocode 4 design approach was checked. The test results revealed that the strength of steel stirrups could not be fully utilized to provide confinement to the UHSC. The bond strength between UHSC and steel section was improved by adding the steel fibres into the UHSC. Reducing the spacing of stirrups or increasing the dosage of steel fibres was beneficial to prevent premature spalling of the concrete cover thus mobilize the steel section strength to achieve higher compressive capacity. Closer spacing of stirrups and adding 0.5% steel fibres in UHSC enhanced the post-peak ductility of CES columns. It is concluded that the code-specified reduction factors applied to the concrete strength and moment resistance can account for the loss of load capacity due to the premature spalling of concrete cover and partial yielding of the encased steel section.

  • Cross-sectional distortions take place when steel box girders a re subjected to torsional moment, as a consequence of which distortional warping stresses are necessarily developed. Additional normal stresses due to the distortion are should be included at the design stage. The relative magnitude with respect to the maximum bending stress are kept less than the specific values, i.e., at 5~10%, by properly spaced intermediate diaphragms that could prevent the distortional deformation of the box girder. However, current design equations for the stiffness of intermediate diaphragms were derived based on BEF. In this study, the area required by the intermediate diaphragm members are investigated through three-dimensional finite element analyses. The results of the analyses indicate that the current equations give to conservative values for the intermediate diaphragm of box girder bridges. Finally, an improved equation for the area of the intermediate diaphragm is derived from a regression analysis from the finite element analysis results.

  • The PHC pile utilizing the air-cooled blast-furnace slag as coarse aggregate was studied. This research was progressed with the range from the indoor mixing design evaluation into the actual goods production. The physical properties of the PHC pile are determined to satisfy through the appropriate mixing design adjustments. However, it should eliminate the aggregates including CaO and MgO in SG when it utilize in an AC (autoclave) type manufacturing process. It satisfied the bending moment, shear strength, and compressive strength of KS F 4306 except the surface states of the pile.
