  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to confirm the anti-inflammatory effects of Cistanche deserticola Water Extracts(CDWE). Methods : In this study, cell viability was determined by MTT assay. NO production was determined with Griess reagent, and IL-6 production was determined by ELISA. And western blot analysis was performed to confirm the protein expression of NOS2, COX-2, I𝜅B-𝛼, p-I𝜅B-𝛼, and NF-𝜅B. Results : CDWE was not cytotoxic at 15.625-1,000㎍/㎖ in RAW 264.7 cells. CDWE inhibited NO production in a concentration-dependent manner, with inhibitory effect on expression levels of IL-6. Expression level of NOS2, NF-𝜅B p65, and p-I𝜅B-𝛼 decreased at 250-1,000㎍/㎖. mRNA expression of COX-2 suppressed at 250, 1,000㎍/㎖. Conclusions : These results suggest that CDWE has anti-inflammatory effects and can be used as an anti-inflammatory therapeutic material.

Methods : We treated a 63-year-old woman with allergic contact dermatitis on the both forearm, jaw, neck, chest with Korean medicine. Before Korean medicine treatments she has taken oral steroids and applied steroid ointment for several years to treat dermatitis, but long-tern steroid therapy aggravated her symptoms like skin pruritus, erythema, exudates or edema. After Korean medical treatment for 27 days, we found that the size of erythema was reduced, and symptoms like pruritus, exudates and edema were lost. We recorded pictures of changes on symptoms. Results & Conclusions : The symptoms of allergic contact dermatitis were improved. Erythema, edema, exudate were lost. Thus Korean medicine treatments are effective on allergic contact dermatitis and could be a great alternative to steroid treatment.

Methods : We treated a patient with facial nerve palsy by acupuncture, electroacupuncture, herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture and cupping. The effect of treatment was evaluated using the House-Brackmann scale, the Yanagihara grading system, and the visual analogue scale(VAS). Results : During the 18 days hospitalization period, the symptoms of hemifacial spasm disappeared and the facial palsy improved. The House-Brackmann scale changed from 4 grade to 2 grade, the Yanagihara grading system changed from 19 to 47, and the VAS changed from 3 to 0. Conclusions : This case report suggests that Korean medicine could be effective for facial palsy accompanied by hemifacial spasms.
