  • This paper proposes a monitoring method for nondestructive and in-process measurement of the case depth in LASER surface heat treatment process. The method is essentially an eddy-current method, and measures sensing coil's electrical impedance which varies with the changes of the material microstructure due to hardening. To investigate te validity of the proposed method a series of experiments were performed for various hardning depths. The results show that the relationship between the eddy- current sensor output and the changes in case depth is almost linear. This indicates that the eddy-current measuring method can be used as one of the possible monitoring method for mesauring the hardened depth in LASER heat treatment processes.

  • This study based on the laboratory works, analyzes factors affecting local scour in order to understand various characteristics of the local scour surrounding bridge piers. Attached with scour protection device as a method for decreasing local scour, it carries out the laboratory experiments and calculates the scour depth. From the experiments attached with the scour protection devices, it seems possible to reduce the scour depth as the protecting plate, column and sacrificial piles are built in the same height with flume bed at pier or footing upstream interrupted falling-flow. And then it could reduce scour depth. The paper presents the following research results: First, the decreasing degree of scour depth is in order of protecting column, protecting plate, sacrificial piles and non-protecting facilities. However, it shows no meaningful difference between protecting column and protecting plate. Second, when $L_p/b$=0.5~1, the decreasing effect of scour depth reached the maximum of 40 percents.

  • In this study relationship between relief angles and chatter vibration in turning was examined by using the direct cutting test, in which the cutting depth of a tapered workpiece is varied continuously and the limiting depth of cut is measured at the time when chatter occurs. Test results reveal that 1) limiting depth of cut increases is proportion to side relief angles between 0$^{\circ}$ and 3$^{\circ}$, 2) limiting depth of cut does not show any evident change in spite of side relief angle increased from 3$^{\circ}$ to 12$^{\circ}$, 3) also limiting depth of cut does not change despite front angle change from 0$^{\circ}$ to 12$^{\circ}$.

  • The use of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gases around the world causes an increase of the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. In order to reduce the concentration of the greenhouse gas, the idea of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean is proposed to be an effective mitigation strategy to counteract potential global warming due to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth by fixed pipeline are performed. The results show that carbon dioxide droplets change to carbon dioxide bubbles in gas phase around 500m in depth, and the droplets are completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the liquide carbon dioxide is released both at 1,000 m in depth with the initial diameter of 0.007m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.011m or less.

  • The apparent depth of space charge region on the ZnO $(10{\bar{1}}0)$ surface in chemisorption of oxygen has been estimated from the capacitance of two contacting faces. When the sample (donor concentration: $2.4{\times}10^{22}\;m^{-3}$) was evacuated at 773 K for 1 hr the depth reached to 40-100 ${\AA}$ depending on sample assembly. Admission of oxygen to the sample resulted in an increase of the depth to 3600 ${\AA}$ where the increment was greater at higher oxygen pressure between 6.6-1600 $N/m^2$. Admission of CO to the sample previously exposed to oxygen yields a decrease in the depth. The results of the measurement support that oxygen is adsorbed as an acceptor on ZnO $(10{\bar{1}}0)$.

  • In this paper, we analyze the effect of the depth perception, volume perception and visual discomfort according to the change of the quality of the depth image and the depth of the major object. For the analysis, a 2D image was converted to eighteen 3D images using depth images generated based on the different depth position of a major object and background, which were represented in three detail levels. The subjective test was carried out using eighteen 3D images so that the degrees of the depth perception, volume perception and visual discomfort recognized by the subjects were investigated according to the change in the depth position of the major object and the quality of depth map. The absolute depth position of a major object and the relative depth difference between background and the major object were adjusted in three levels, respectively. The details of the depth map was also represented in three levels. Experimental results showed that the quality of the depth image differently affected the depth perception, volume perception and visual discomfort according to the absolute and relative depth position of the major object. In the case of the cardboard depth image, it severely damaged the volume perception regardless of the depth position of the major object. Especially, the depth perception was also more severely deteriorated by the cardboard depth image as the major object was located inside the screen than outside the screen. Furthermore, the subjects did not felt the difference of the depth perception, volume perception and visual comport from the 3D images generated by the detail depth map and by the rough depth map. As a result, it was analyzed that the excessively detail depth map was not necessary for enhancement of the stereoscopic perception in the 2D-to-3D conversion.

  • PURPOSES : Compared to the criteria from advanced countries, Korea has conservative criteria for the buried depth of pipeline (about 30~70cm deeper) causing the waste of cost and time. Therefore, this research investigated the effect of various buried depths of pipeline on pavement performance in order to modify the criteria to be safe but economical. In addition, a recycled aggregate which is effective in economical and environmental aspect was evaluated to be used as a refilling material. METHODS : In this study, total 10 pilot sections which are composed with various combinations of pavement structure, buried depth of pipeline, and refilling material were constructed and the telecom cable was utilized as a buried pipeline. During construction, LFWD (Light Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests were conducted on each layer to measure the structural capacity of underlying layers. After the construction is completed, FWD (Falling Weight Deflectometer) tests and moving load tests were performed on top of the asphalt pavement surface. RESULTS : It was found from the LFWD and FWD test results that as the buried depth decrease, the deflections in subbase and surface layer were increased by 30% and 5~10%, respectively, but the deflection in base layer remained the same. In the moving load test, the longitudinal maximum strain was increased by 30% for 120mm of buried depth case and 5% for 100mm of buried depth case. Regarding the effect of refilling material, it was observed that the deflections in subbase and surface layer were 10% lager in recycled aggregate compared to the sand material. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the testing results, it was found that the change in buried depth and refiliing material would not significantly affect the pavement performance. However, it is noted that the final conclusion should be made based on an intensive structural analysis for the pavement under realistic conditions (i.e., repeated loading and environmental loading) along with the field test results.

  • SIMS is an indispensable surface analysis instrument in trace element depth profiling because of high detection sensitivity and excellent depth resolution, however, it requires a standard sample to do quantitative analysis due to matrix effect depending on the species of impurities and sample matricies and on the sputtering rates. Among the SNMS technology developed to supply the deficiency, we researched into CsX+ SNMS which improved the result quantitatively without any extra epuipments. So basic SNMS functions were confirmed through matrix element composition rate analysis using Siq layer etc., and adaptability to trace element concentration alaysis was tried. For that purpose we compared SIMS depth profile data for Boron which presented strong matrix effect on account of Fluorin existence after BF2 ion implantation on silicon substrate with SNMS data. Also detection limit and dynamic range were investigated. After these experements we concluded that CsX+ SNMS reduced matrix effect and we could apply it to profile impurity elements.

  • This study was carried out to find out the effect of soil and water storable pits on reducing the surface runoff. 10 pits were digged in each plot of $50m^2$ along contour line. One kind of pits has a size of 30 cm width, 100cm length and 30cm depth, and the other has 30cm width, 100cm length and 20cm depth. 1. The soil and water storable pits have a significant effect on reducing surface runoff. Control plot had surface runoff 2.3-2.6 times more than the plots with pits. 2. There is no significant difference in surface runoff between 30cm depth pit and 20cm depth pit. 3. The soil and water storable pits did not have any effect on coverage, survival and growth of three species. 4. Steep slope had worse results than the other slopes in coverage, growth and fresh weight of experiment species.

  • The first Korean earthquake resistant design code was enacted in 1988. In the code, the soil factor which takes into account both the soil amplification factor and the soil -structare interaction effect is divided into three groups : soil factor, 5 : 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5. In order to assist in choosing the soil factors appropriately in the earthquake resistant design, the local site effects on the based shear force induced by earthquakes are considered in depth for typical soil conditions in Korea. The depth of the alluvial and/or weathered zone is usually not deep and the fresh rock is found at depth shallower than 20 meters, and even at about 10 meters around Seoul. One dimensional wave propagation theory and the elastic half space method are used to obtain the soil -structure interaction effect as well as the soil amplification effect. The kinematic interaction effect due to scattering of waves by pile foundation is also considered. Finally, the soil factor is recommended for each soil condition from loose state to dense, and also from shallow soil depth to deep, so that the designer can choose the factor with-out difficulty.
