Luminescence is a physical phenomenon exhibited by many non-conducting, crystalline materials, such as quartz and feldspar. Within the crystals, energy absorbed from ionising radiation frees electrons to move through the crystal lattice and some are trapped at defects in the lattice. Observable luminescence is produced by electrons, released from traps by stimulation by absorption of light, which recombine with lattice defects which act as luminescence centers - optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). In a similar way to thermoluminescence(TL) dating, controlled measurement of the OSL signal can provide a means of determining the time since the last exposure of a layer of sediment to sunlight, the age of the sediment. However, whereas in the thermoluminescence dating of sediment only part of the latent thermoluminescence signal is bleached by sunlight as the sediment is deposited and allowance must be made during the laboratory measurements for the light insensitive component, optically induced luminescence dating has the advantage of working only with light sensitive traps in the crystal. Determination of the time since deposition of Quaternary sediment samples from the OSL of quartz grains using blue light was performed. A series of experiments and recent developments relating OSL dating are described, beginning by identifying the features which make OSL signals suitable for the development of dating method. Additionally, there are suggestions as to future research for obtaining reliable ages and a comment on current best practice on procedures, with the dating results of Quaternary sediment.
As a second part of the study entitled "Field Measurement and Analysis of Fluvial Sediment in the Cheongmi-Strea", this study concerns mineralogical and contaminative characteristics of sediment particles collected at Wonbu-Gyo and Hanpyeong-Gyo in the Cheongmi-Stream. The mineralogical analysis of the bed sediment collected reveals that, in general , quarz is the most abundant mineral found in sands with feldspars and rock fragments in the next, which confirms what is known in the literature. The shape factor of sand particles is about 0.7, which also agrees to what is known in the foreign literature. The analysis also reveals that the clay particles collected are composed mainly of illite, kaolinate, and chlorite. The analysis of contamination reveals that there is no substantial difference between the contents of organic material and heavy metals in the surface water and those in the pore water beneath the river bed. It is because the sampling for this analysis was conducted right after the September flood during which the fresh top soil from the upstream watershed replaced the old bed sediment and pore water that would probably be more contaminated. The contents of geavy metals in the bed sediment of sand particles do not exceed those in the soils adjacent to the river. For fine sediment such as clays, however, the contents of heavy metals, especially of mercury and zinc, far exceed those in the soils adjacent to the river. These fine sediments are transported downstream in the form of wash load and deposited in part on flood plains, which could be a new source of contaminants.taminants.

Multi-beam echosounder data and grain size analysis data of surface sediment were acquired and analyzed in order to investigate the shelf-to-slope morphology, geological character, and their geological controlling factors in the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin. According to the morphological character, the continental shelf can be divided into two parts: (1) shallow (~100 m) and steep ($0.5^{\circ}$) inner shelf, (2) deep (100-300 m) and gentle ($0.2^{\circ}$) outer shelf. The continental slope is featured with eight distinct topographic depressions of various spatial dimension (~121 $km^2$ in area) and head wall gradient (${\sim}24.3^{\circ}$). They are developed adjacent to each other and presumably formed by submarine landslides which have recurred under the strong influences of earthquakes and eustatic sea-level change. The inner continental shelf and the continental slope are dominated by fine-grained sediment, whereas the outer continental shelf is dominated by coarse-grained sediment. The surface sediment distribution seems dominantly influenced by eustatic sea-level change. The outer continental shelf is mostly covered by coarse relict sediment deposited during lowstand sea-level, while the inner shelf is covered with recent sediment during highstand sea-level. The surface of the continental slope is covered with fine-grained sediments which were supplied by hemipelagic advection process.
Mineral and geochemical analysis were conducted on two sections (~3.5 m) of red-brown claysilt sediments covering the gneiss and granite weathering zones in Suwon-si for establishing Quaternary paleoenvironmental changes in Korea. The sections were divided into four sedimentary layers (Unit 1-4) by vertical changes in mineral composition and chemical composition. The lowermost unit 1 was a sandy sediment with a high K-feldspar content with a significant contribution of weathered bedrock. Unit 2 was a transition layer showing intermediate characteristics. Unit 3 was a reddish brown clay-silt sediment, with a total clay content of 58% on average, and the main clay minerals were illite-smectite mixed layer minerals and hydroxy-interlayered vermiculite/smectite. Unit 3 contained almost no plagioclase, while the content of kaolin minerals derived by the plagioclase weathering was higher than in the other layers. Unit 4 had similar mineral composition and chemical properties to Unit 3, but had a higher content of plagioclase and chlorite and lower content of kaolin minerals. The chemical compositions of the sections were compared with those in other regions of Korea, suggesting the eolian origin of Units 3 and 4. The paleoenvironmental change in the sedimentary section of this region was interpreted as follows. Weathered products of gneiss and granite, which are bedrocks of this region, were eroded and deposited as sandy sediments in the periphery to form the lower layers (Unit 1, 2), followed by the deposition of the claysilty rich eolian sediments (Unit 3) during the glacial. Unit 3 was chemically weathered during the warm humid climate during the last interglacial, developing a reddish brown color. After that, a eolian sediment layer (Unit 4) was deposited during the last glacial.
Distribution, bathymetry and textural parameters of the bottom sediment deposited between Geoje and Namhae Islands were studied to understand the depositional environment of the area. The study area is divided into three different provinces. Except for the Gwangyang Bay and Changseon Channel, mud dominates in the western part whereas sandy mud and muddy sand prevail in the southeastern part including the eastern area of the Yogji Island. The relict sediment is located in the eastern part of the area. Generally, the Holocene sediment, located in the northern part of the area, is considered to be transported and deposited by a pelagic suspension mode. Influence of strong tidal currents results in some depressions in the vicinity of Changseon Island and the eastern part of the Yogji Island, The Tsushima Warm Current is supposed to affect the southern part of the area. The two parallels sand ridges lying in the southeastern part of the area are covered with very thin Holocene mud. This seems to be caused by the winnowing effect of the current. The similarity between the two directions of the current and the ridges encourages this idea. The boundary between the Holocene and relict sediment, however, lies further south the ridges.
The sediments on the continental shelf off the west coast (middle part) of Korea are divided into northern sandy deposits and southern muddy sediments, respectively. The sandy sediments consist dominantly of quartz and feldspar grains, representing mature-stage sediment in composition. Further-more, the presence of iron-stained quartz grain and glauconite does indicate that the sediments are similar to the relict sediments on the outer shelf of Yellow Sea and East China Sea. These sandy sediments are interpreted as a basal sands that were deposited during the transgression period due to sea-level rise after to last glacial maximum (LGM). The tidal deposits in the Namyang Bay, the west coast of Korea are divided vertically into the upper layer of muddy sediments and the lower layer of sandy sediments. the upper layer sediments contain abundant rock fragments, and are interpreted as the modern tetragenous sediments. The lower layer sediments, on the other hand, are rich in quartz and feldspar grains, representing high index of sediment maturity ratio. the lower layer sandy deposits show the presence of iron-stained.

The horizontal two-dimensional model which can predict the long-term water quality(WQ) change is setup for the environmental management. For the model calibration and verification, we measured the pollutants load at 22 streams and the WQ at 16 stations monthly and/or seasonally in Chinhae . Masan Bay. The pollutants release rate from the sediment was also measured to consider the regionally different sediment pollution level. From the model application results, it is shown that the WQ concentrations in most of the regions adjacent to land and river inflow are considerably high, but rapidly decrease along the seaward direction. In Masan Bay, the particulate inflow-pollutants were substantially deposited and gradually contaminated the bottom sediment on account of the excessive pollutants load and flow stagnancy. Eutrophication in the effluent discharge region was also being slowly progressed by the inefficiently treated wastewater containing amount of Nand P constituents.
The purpose of this study is to identify potential methodologies to reasonably estimate the effectiveness of road vacuum cleaning in terms of pollution loads reduction. In this context, this study proposes two empirical equations to estimate the amount of diffuse pollution loads removed by road vacuum cleaning. The proposed equations estimate the removed amount of pollution loads respectively taking into consideration of: a) the distance of road vacuum cleaning; and b) the amount of road-deposited sediment(RDS). All of the parameters in these equations were evaluated based on results of field monitoring and laboratory analyses, except for the RDS generation rate. The results of this study suggest that pollutant removal efficiency is 46.3% for $BOD_5$ and 56.4% for TP; discharge ratios for particulate and dissolved $BOD_5$ are 35.0% and 21.2%, respectively; discharge ratios for particulate and dissolved TP are 35.0% and 19.4%, respectively. Average concentrations of pollutants in RDS are $BOD_5$ 977.3 mg/kg and TP 317.6 mg/kg. Some results of a case study imply that both equations can be potentially useful if the adopted parameters are reasonably evaluated. In particular, the RDS generation rate should be evaluated based on monitoring data collected from various road conditions.
Sediment from the upstream channel has been deposited near the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage (NREB) due to the mild slope and decreased velocity. The annual mechanical dredging to ensure the flood capacity has been performed to remove the deposited sediment. However, the dredging method is not considered as an effective countermeasure due to high cost and long time to operate. Therefore, many methods for sedimentation reduction have been proposed for NREB. Especially, the channel contraction method to mitigate sedimentation problem by changing the channel geometry from 2 km to 3 km upstream of NREB has been recently suggested as an effective countermeasure. However, there is the possibility that the channel contraction method induces flood level increase compared to original condition. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate quantitatively the flood level changes in the upstream and downstream section due to the channel contraction method for NREB. In this study, water level changes by 10% channel contraction of whole width has been evaluated using the HEC-RAS model and simulated with and without channel contraction for various flood discharge. As a result, water level in the section where the channel was contracted was decreased by 0.02 m and flood level at the upstream of channel contracted was increased up to 0.015 m for the 500-year flood.

To investigate the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area of Chonnam and to collect evidence of the past extreme events causing coastal flooding, three sites were surveyed among the sediments of Baeksoo-eup Hassari. In this study, the changes of particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments were investigated. The sediments near Baeksoonam Elementary School at the elevation of 10m near the paleo-coastline are estimated to have been deposited at about 3,400 years ago and the grain size of the upper part of the sandy layer is in the range of $2.47-2.11{\varphi}$. The burial age of the sediment layer at Sadeung junction(BSN-B) was about 100 years. Considering the distance from the current coastline, the sands forming the dune are estimated to have been moved or deposited from the nearby area or the other dune on the front side. The mean grain size is observed to be fining upward. Especially, the mean of the upper part is about $2.3{\varphi}$, which is similar to other survey points. The averaged grain size of the lower part of the BSNC (Hasari-1 Gu) was $2.196{\varphi}$ and the upper part was $2.16{\varphi}$. The sorting showed that the upper part was slightly poorer than the lower, and it was difficult to specify the change of the environment. The burial age of the lower layer, which contains shells, was about 300 years. Considering previous studies, this shell layer is presumed to have formed by coastal flooding, such as a storm surge.
