  • This study investigated the awareness and purchase status of the private dental insurance. Self-reported survey was conducted with patients over the age of twenties who visited dental institutions located in Seoul Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province. The demographic and health related characteristics of respondents were analyzed, and logistic regression was conducted to examine factors affecting the awareness and purchase of private dental insurance. Because only four years had been passed since the introduction of private dental insurance, the awareness and purchase rate was found to be low. However, the number of people considering subscription due to the economic burden of dental care service was relatively high. Factors affecting awareness were satisfaction of the national health insurance, purchase of private health insurance and private dental insurance, self-perceived dental health status, and smoking. The variables affecting purchase of dental insurance were age, awareness, purchase of private health insurance, smoking, number of visits to dental institution. Because qualitative and quantitative change would be made in the dental care utilization due to the rapidly growing dental insurance subscribers, further studies regarding the trend of purchase rate of private dental insurance and the effect of dental insurance on use of dental institution are needed.

Smoking amount per day were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), pocket depth (p<0.01), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.001). Duration of smoking were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), pocket depth (p<0.01), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.001). Drinking cycle were statistically significant to gingival index (p<0.05), and clinical attachment loss (p<0.05). It is investigated that smoking (p<0.05) influence on clinical attachment loss. Dental care institute needs to make patients be aware of the fact that excessive smoking and drinking affect the periodontal health status for prevention of periodontal disease and maintenance of oral health. Results: As a result of this study, students' subjective perceptions about oral health had positive correlation with oral-related appearance(p <0.05). It is noteworthy that those who responded on 'satisfactory' oral health status indicated that 16% 'unsatisfactory', 28% 'average' and 68% 'satisfactory' on oral-related appearance. Students' self-rated oral hygiene management ability and irregular teeth conditions were also found relevant in causing discomfort in interpersonal activities, whereas students responded 'satisfactory', 0.00%; 'average', 31.82%; 'unsatisfactory' 68.18% (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that oral-related appearance can have an impact on oral health status and that oral-related appearance can be a contributing factor to improve oral health status and therefore results in promotion of general health. In the future, further research should be considered about perception on oral-related appearance, oral health status and any resulting behavior changes.

  • Purpose: The study was aimed at investigating changes in periodontal parameters and superoxide dismutase activity triggered by root surface debridement with and without micronutrient supplementation in postmenopausal women. Methods: Forty-three postmenopausal chronic periodontitis patients were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=22) were provided periodontal treatment in the form of scaling and root planing (SRP) and group 2 (n=21) patients received SRP along with systemic administration of micronutrient antioxidants. Patients in both groups were subjected to root surface debridement. Group 2 patients also received adjunctive micronutrient antioxidant supplementation. Serum and salivary superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity along with periodontal parameters were recorded at baseline and 3 months after therapy. Results: Salivary and serum SOD values significantly (P<0.05) improved with periodontal treatment. Improvement in systemic enzymatic antioxidant status along with reduction in gingival inflammation and bleeding on probing (%) sites was significantly greater in group 2 as compared to group 1. Conclusions: Adjunctive micronutrient supplements reduce periodontal inflammation and improve the status of systemic enzymatic antioxidants in postmenopausal women.
