Changes in oral health status of the elderly with visiting oral hygiene care intervention based on community health care: Case reports (커뮤니티케어에 기반한 방문 구강 관리 중재 노인의 구강 건강 상태 변화에 관한 증례 보고)

  • Objectives: This case - study was conducted to assess the oral health status change of the elderly through visiting oral care interventions based on a community health care project. Methods: Professional dental hygiene treatment and oral health education, including brushing using interdental toothbrushes and sponge brushes, were performed on three senior citizens who received home visiting oral health care benefit. Results: The subject's periodontal conditions improved including gingival inflammation and bleeding. The gingival color tured pink by controlling the dental plaque. Conclusions: Visiting oral health care contributed to the improvement of oral health of the elderly. Therefore, based on the characteristics of the elderly with various systemic diseases, it is necessary to discover various cases that can perform professional and customized visiting oral health care programs.

A study on the correlation of the college life and oral prophylaxis in some students studying dental hygiene (일부 치위생과 학생들의 대학생활과 치면세마 교과목과의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the satisfaction for college life and oral prophylaxis subject and improve the satisfaction for this subject by satisfying students' desire through the results of correlation, and to inspire a professional sense by helping students enjoy healthy college life. In order to achieve these purposes, 127 senior students of the Dental Hygiene Department, Kwangju Health College took part in this study to examine the satisfaction for a study course, a lab, professors, a college, and subjects. The following results were obtained. 1. The overall satisfaction for the Dental Hygiene Department was 2.83 and the highest dissatisfaction factors included difficult subjects and non-aptitude. The overall satisfaction for professors was 3.33 and students wanted professors' human contact with students and a well-prepared lecture. The overall satisfaction for college life was 2.65, suggesting not very high satisfaction, and the highest dissatisfaction factors included similar life to high school and surrounding environment. 2. The overall satisfaction for theory was 3.83 and for practice was 3.91 in oral prophylaxis. While the highest satisfaction was found in 'the objective and direction of class' and 'class and a supplementary lesson in not giving a lecture', the lowest satisfaction was found in 'experience in reading textbook-related materials or books'. 3. The correlation of the satisfaction of theory and practice of oral prophylaxis was examined. The satisfaction of oral prophylaxis theory was positively correlated with a school course, professors, and college, while the satisfaction of oral prophylaxis practice was positively correlated with a school course, professors, college, satisfaction of oral prophylaxis theory, and present health condition(p<0.05). 4. Factors influencing the satisfaction for the theory of oral prophylaxis included professors, while factors influencing the satisfaction for the practice were statistically significant in professors and health condition(p<0.05). Based on these results, in order for professional dental hygienists to be developed as professionals serving society, it is recommended to enhance the satisfaction for an oral prophylaxis subject and that professors should provide warm-hearted support and become a role model as an educator.

Analysis of a clinical dentistry course to study the need for integrated curriculum : in the case of dental hygiene department in Korea and Japan (임상치과 영역 교과목 분석을 통한 통합교육과정에 대한 고찰 : 한국, 일본 일부 치위생학과 사례를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical dentistry curriculum in Korea and Japan in order to review the application of integrated curriculum in the field. We collected the clinical dentistry syllabi for 2015-16 of the department of dental hygiene of Korea G University and Japan N University. Using the data from Korea, items that were duplicated and integrated were classified by the subjects covered in clinical dentistry. In addition, through case studies conducted in Korea and Japan, we analyzed and compared the credits, class hours, teaching methods, and evaluation methods, by subject. In Korea the total class hours in clinical dentistry, including clinical practice, was 1,095, and in Japan it was 1,104. In Korea, the syllabus covered by each department consisted of about 200 hours centering on theoretical lectures. In Japan, the integrated form of clinical dentistry was taught, and the instructions included all the contents of clinical dental study and also problem-based learning for approximately 100 hours. To strengthen the competence of dental hygienists as professionals, who are actively involved in dental practice, it is necessary to integrate the education contents of segmented clinical dentistry from the perspective of dental hygiene. It is also important to apply teaching methods that can help students improve their ability to solve problems.

The effect of factors dental treatment fear of dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene students (치위생과학생과 비보건계열 학생의 치과치료공포수준에 미치는 요인)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of factors analyes the associated by the dental treatment fear of level dental hygiene and non-dental hygiene students, and then to provide basic material which can help to improveoral health and effective dental treatment. Methods : The subject in this study were 275 students in Jeolla region. The data were collected from March through April 2010, by way of the self-reported questionnaire. Results : 1. Subjects, who correspond to 'high fear level' which is more than 60 points in the scale of Dental Fear Survey, were indicated to be larger in collegians of general-related departments(38.9%) than collegians of health-related department(36.3%).2. Among three detailed factors, the treatment-stimulator response factor showed the higher fear sense than other 2 factors. In the physiological response, 'muscular tension' was 2.72 points, there by having been indicated to be the highest.3. The more belonging to the group with high fear was indicated to lead to the more in direct pain experience, in non-anesthesia pain experience, and in indirect pain experience through brothers and sisters. Even the symptom and syndrome in oral disease were indicated to be much. 4. As a result of comparing difference in dental fear level depending on pain experience, it was indicated that the more belonging to the group with high fear leads to the more in direct pain experience, in non-anesthesia pain experience, and in indirect pain experience through brothers and sisters. Conclusions : Dental fear must be controlled carefully in order to promote oral health and effective dental treatment.

  • This research was conducted to provide standardization method for new dental hygiene curriculum by identifying the overlapping of education content of the Department of Dental Hygiene and analytic syllabus. To complement these overlapping education programs, I would like to make some proposals. First, unified course shall be provided by compromising specific terms of overlapping subject, overlapping curriculums for the necessary skills required for job analysis of dental hygienist and overlapping class time. This shall increase the efficiency the class time and required curriculums. Next, proactive and continuos research for standardized approach to the Department of Dental Hygiene education content is necessary and Dental Hygiene academic circle shall build trust.

Analysis of current status of a dental hygiene science curriculum according to the dental hygienist competency (치과위생사 역량에 따른 교육과정 현황 분석: G 대학 치위생학과 교육과정을 중심으로)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate and analyzed the current status of a dental hygiene curriculum according to the dental hygienist competency. Methods: The study subjects were 59 courses in the department of dental hygiene in G University from April 1 to May 30, 2015. Except for liberal arts, 51 courses were finally selected and analyzed for the relationship between the curriculum and competency. For each course, systematic reviews were made by subject name, core competency, achievement goals, lecture hours, weekly themes, and learning goals. Three experts in the dental hygiene evaluated and analyzed the association of competency and goals. Results: Each course was operated by the goal from one to twenty two competencies of dental hygiene. Achieving one item of competency in a course required 13 hours on the average from minimum 2 hours to maximum 30 hours. More than 20 courses were operated and more than 900 hours were necessary for achieving the competency. The competency included the contents of 'Be able to utilize basic medical and dental knowledge in dental hygiene care and patient care' among the dental hygiene competencies. Conclusions: Competency based dental hygiene education will provide theoretical background for defining the identity of dental hygienist as a health care worker and to encourage professionals who contribute to the recognition of healthy society. Further research should be continued for improving the competency-based dental hygiene curriculum and education methods for implementing the curriculum within the paradigm of health care services.

Satisfaction with instruction medium according to learner attitude and lecture mode in the dental hygiene students (일부 치위생학과 학생들의 학습태도 및 강의형태에 따른 학습매체 만족도 조사)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the satisfaction with instruction medium according to learner attitude and lecture mode in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A web-based self-reported questionnaire was complected by 155 dental hygiene students in Cheonan from May 26 to June 5, 2015. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, school adaptation, interest to learn, effort to learn, faculty centered lecture, learner centered lecture, self-directed learning, motivation to learn, characteristics of each subject, and satisfaction with lecture mode. The study was approved by institutional review board (IRB) by Baekseok University. Chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression were used to evaluate the satisfaction to medium of instruction according to explanation factors. Results: The lecture mode, opportunity and motivation to learn, interest to learn and effort to learn were the significant factors to satisfaction with instruction medium. In multivariate logistic regression model, the adjusted odds ratio was 6.28 for the opportunity to learn and 4.87 for the interesting to learn. Conclusions: The satisfaction with instruction medium is the most important factor that decides the lecture mode and learner attitude including opportunity to learn and concern to learn.

A study on the validation of learning goals of community dental hygiene practicum based on the community dental hygiene process of care (지역사회 치위생관리과정에 기반한 지역사회치위생학 실습 학습목표 타당화 연구)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to define the concept of the community dental hygiene process of care and to develop competency-based learning goals applying the community dental hygiene process of care. Methods: Based on 12 references, the concept of community dental hygiene process of care was defined, and 393 learning objectives were derived to carry out the first and second categorization process. The 57 learning goals were classified according to the 15-week learning subject (once a week) for project learning. To evaluate the validity of the developed learning subjects and goals, 80 community dental hygiene professors were surveyed. The final learning subjects and goals were created by going through the process of collecting opinions from the 35 validity evaluation results received as responses, and opinions from 10 community dental hygiene professors. Results: The first and second validity surveys on the operational definition of community dental hygiene process of care showed 4.32 points and 4.60 points, respectively. As a result of the evaluation of the validity of the learning subjects and goals for 1~15 weeks, the average validity of the learning subjects was 4.44 points, and of learning goals was 4.32 points. Conclusions: The learning subjects and goals developed by applying the theoretical framework for community dental hygiene process of care defined in this study can be used as a learning guideline for learners to understand the theory of community dental hygiene area and to derive the standards of competence in the field of practice.

The status of use of oral care products in Korea at 2006 (우리나라 국민의 2006년도 구강관리용품 사용실태)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of oral hygiene products in Korean adult population. And it was conducted to make a baseline in planning the operation of the oral health for the Korean adult. Methods : The National Survey data of Oral Health was used. The use of each oral hygiene product was analysed according to socioeconomic status (Age, Occupation, Residential district), smoking status and concern about one's oral health. The subject of this study were 14,368 of 2000 year, 3,526 of 2003 year and 2,439 of 2006 year. They were organized from 20s to 60s. Data was analysed into Pearson chi-square test and Fisher's exact test using SAS 8.01 program. Results : 1. The rate of using oral hygiene product was increased, but the rate of non-using people remains 65.8% on the 2006 data. 2. The non-using group of the oral hygiene products was the age of sixty, farmer, rancher, fisherman, military, ruralist, smoker and the people do not concern about their oral health(p<0.05). Conclusion : To improve the rate of using oral hygiene products, effective motivation method would be necessary. In addition, It is required to educate the group more individually. This is for them to have a interesting about oral hygiene products and learn how to choice appropriate product. In the future, study about the reason of non-using oral hygiene products, and more concrete method for improving their behavior would be needed.

Level of perception of professional ethics education and the knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics of students and professors in dental hygiene (치위생학 전공 학생과 교수자의 직업윤리교육 의식과 의료윤리 관련 지식과 태도)

  • Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the dental hygiene students and professors' knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics and their level of perception of professional ethics education. Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study of 330 students and professors in the field of dental hygiene using a structured questionnaire. The sub-factors of knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics were classified into patient relations, medical and social relations, and individual specialized fields, and analyzed for comparison. Results: In the university curriculum, the professional ethics completion rate was 34.8% for students and 22.1% for professors, but 98.5% of respondents said that professional ethics is important. Their knowledge and attitudes related to medical ethics were average, ranging from 5 points to 3.37 points, followed by "relationships with patients (3.75 points)", "medical and social relations (3.19 points)", and "individual specialties (3.16 points)." Conclusions: Students and professors who major in dental hygiene recognize the importance of professional ethics, but the level of knowledge and attitude related to medical ethics has been found to be moderate. Therefore, it is suggested that medical ethics, including professional ethics, should be treated as an essential subject in the university curriculum.
