Objectives: Oral diseases can be prevented, and early treatment through dental checkups is important. This study was investigated the relationship between dental checkups and unmet dental care needs in Korean adults. Methods: From the data of the 7th Korean national health and nutrition survey (2016-2017), the final 9,300 of the 16,277 participants selected as the method for extracting stratified colonies by complex sample design. A structured questionnaire interview was used, and chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: The relationship between dental checkups and unmet dental care needs for the last one year was analyzed by controlling demographic characteristics, variables related to health conditions, and "use of dental clinics for the last year." The unmet dental care needs were 7.57 times higher (CI: 6.49-8.83) for non-users of dental clinics for 1 year, and 1.32 times (CI: 1.13-1.54) for dental checkups for 1 year compared to non-dental checkups patients. Conclusions: As described above, there was a close relationship between adult dental checkups and unmet dental care needs. Therefore, it is suggested that it is necessary to expand educational publicity and prepare policy strategies such as visiting dental checkups to improve the adult dental checkups.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing on the denture satisfaction in the low income elderly people. Methods: The subjects were 143 elderly people from 60 to 75 years old wearing dentures and receiving consistent follow-up in the public health center in Busan. A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the elderly people from February 1 to March 1, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of denture satisfaction, social variables, and psychological variables. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. The sociodemographic characteristics included gender, age, and chronic diseases. The recognition of oral health included pronunciation, denture maintenance, mastication ability, and education for denture care. The questionnaire was measured by Likert 5 scale. Results: Gender, chronic disease, denture care instructions, and the self-preception of the oral health after denture treatment were closely correlated with denture satisfaction(p<0.001). Age and the number of repairs were very important factor to denture satisfaction(p<0.05). Elderly women were more satisfied with denture than men and those who had no chronic diseases tended to be more satisfied with denture. Those who received oral care instructions were more satisfied with the denture than those who did not. The younger age group and no repairing prosthetic group tended to be more satisfied with the denture. Conclusions: It is important to provide the denture management services to the low income elderly when they demand the services. The national dental health policy must be focused on connection of the elderly people denture services with the public health center.
Korea Health Panel Survey (KHPS) has been conducted to provide nationally representative estimates of health care use and expenditures for non-institutionalized population in Korea since 2008. The aim of this study was to present estimates from KHPS on dental utilization and expenditures from 2008 to 2011. While weighted estimates were presented for each year from 2008 to 2011, the focus of this study was on the 2011 estimates and changes in dental utilization and expenditures between 2008 and 2011. Weighted estimates were obtained using population weights and statistical significances were analysed by independent t-test or ANOVA test using SPSS version 20 for Windows. In 2011, 21.1% of Korean population obtained outpatient dental services from dentists. From 2008 to 2011, the percent of people with a dental visit in each year increased slightly. In 2011, the mean number of dental visits was 4.46. While the mean number of dental visits remained stable by 2010, it increased slightly in 2011. The total annual dental expense in 2011 for people with a visit was about 460,000 Korean Won and 10% higher in 2008. In summary, this study results highlight low rates of dental utilization and high dental expenses in Korean population.
The purpose of this study is to provide basic information about oral health behavior of dental technology department students. Questionnaire surveys were conducted for 925 dental technology department student. Their knowledge and attitude towards oral health and health education services utilization were surveyed. The results obtained were as follows; 1. Ever thought most of the students recognized that oral health was an important health issue, there were more subjects who lowly regarded the level of the perceived self-oral health knowledge than who regarded highly. Female students were negative on the state of their oral health than male students. 2. On the water fluoridation program, 52.2% of the respondents replied that they do know well about the program and 44.1% of them supported the execution of the program. Female students approved of fluoridation program than male students. 3. Number of mean tooth brushing was 2.71 times a day, the most frequently exhibited time of doing tooth brushing was after taking a breakfast or before going to bed. 4. The students who had experiences of visiting dental clinics for the past 1 year were 47.7% and the purpose of visiting dental clinics for the last time was to conduct caries treatment.
Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene and provide basic data for developing standard curricula for geriatric hygiene. Methods: To investigate the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene, 212 students from dental hygiene departments and 205 dental hygienists engaged in clinical practice were enrolled. Results: Among the educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene, Geriatric oral health issues category was the highest with 4.06 points for students and 4.05 points for dental hygienists. Students who completed a geriatric dental hygiene course had higher scores for the following sub-domains compared to those who did not: need for geriatric dental hygiene-related theoretical education (p=0.002), needs for practice education with elderly people (p=0.001), and confidence in performing oral healthcare for elderly people after graduation (p<0.001). Meanwhile, clinical dental hygienists who not completed geriatric-related courses had higher scores for, need for geriatric dental hygiene-related theoretical education, need for practice education with elderly people, and confidence in performing oral healthcare for elderly people. but, there was no significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that students and dental hygienists had high educational needs for geriatric dental hygiene. In particular, there was a high demand for education related to Geriatric oral health issues as well as Geriatric dental hygiene care and skills.
Objectives : This study was progressed a research with the aim of using it as basic data necessary for a plan in order to increase qualitatively medical level for patients who feel anxiety about dental treatment, and of offering basic data for improving the whole medical services by grasping conditions and satisfaction level with laser therapy in patients who visited dental clinic. Methods : The statistical analysis was carried out t-test and ANOVA by using SPSS(PASW statistics) 18.0. When there is statistically significant difference in analysis of variance, post-test was carried out by using Duncan multiple range test. Results : In therapy kinds of using laser, gingival treatment was the largest with 37.0%. It was the highest in likely seeming to be not painful with 32.9% as for a decisive factor, which came to receive laser therapy, and in having been enough to endure even if having been slightly tingling as for pain level. Conclusions : This study can be considered to have significance in changing recognition of medical cure by surveying patients satisfaction with using laser as a method for slightly solving elements of fear and anxiety about dental treatment and to have its value as basic data for seeking improvement plan for diverse medical services in the future.
Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the recognition between laypersons and dental hygienists on expansion of health insurance of scaling. Methods : A self-reported questionnaires was filled out by 100 laypersons and 100 dental hygienists from October 7, 2013. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 21.0 program. Results : All the dental hygienists recognized the introduction of the health insurance of scaling and 71.0% of the laypersons agreed. The introduction of health insurance of scaling was responsible for the interest toward scaling in 80 dental hygienists(80.0%) and 66 laypersons(66.0%). 94% of dental hygienists answered that health insurance of scaling would prevent periodontal diseases. The expansion of health insurance of scaling revealed many periodontal diseases and 52% of laypersons answered that prevention of periodontal diseases would deprive the dental hygienists of their jobs. Conclusions : The expansion of health insurance of scaling can prevent the periodontal diseases and enhance the oral health services. So the government must try to expand the health insurance of scaling.
Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with unmet dental needs among adults with activity limitations. Methods: Data were obtained from the seventh Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The final sample consisted of 945 adults aged 20 years or older with limited activity. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the influence of predisposing, enabling, and need factors on unmet dental needs. Results: The proportion of adults with unmet dental needs during the last year was 52.2% in the middle-aged group and 45.5% in the older adult group. Higher household income was associated with fewer unmet dental needs in both groups. In the older adult group, married people were less likely to have unmet dental needs. In the middle-aged group, adults who perceived their oral health as poor were more likely to have unmet dental needs. Conclusions: All three factors (predisposing, enabling, and need) were found to be associated with unmet dental needs among adults with activity limitations. Special efforts should be made to improve access to dental care services for middle-aged adults with activity limitations.
Purpose: This study conducted a survey on the elderly with physical debilities, who are in a medically vulnerable social class, to examine closely their demo-sociological characteristics, unmet needs, dental states, and living qualities and satisfaction levels relating to oral health and social supports to them, and also to prepare the basis for effective public medical policies and health improvement programs aimed at improving the quality of life for the elderly with physical debilities. Methods: Twenty-two elderly care facilities within Jeju Special Self-Government Province participated in the survey. Between 11 January and 5 March 2010, a total of 250 elderly persons(65 and over) with physical debilities were interviewed and their dental health was checked. Results: The results of the survey are as follows. The need for social support for dental care of the elderly with physical debilities was high in the medical institution-supported service (49.6%). The unmet needs for physical care were high in bathing (49.6%) and using public transportation (71.6%). More than half of these surveyed had ten or fewer teeth. The survey found that 31.6% of the participants experienced problems eating, due to poor dental health. Concerning quality of life, 30.5% of those surveyed experienced physical pain. Conclusion: In summary, the ages of the survey participants directly relates to the degree of behavioral debility experienced. The more debility a participant exhibits, the greater is the need for social support and dental care. The dental health of a participant directly relates to a higher quality of life. Good dental health of a participant translate to better quality of life. In light of the fact that the elderly with physical debilities suffer from a lack of accessibility to medical care and worse oral health than do other elderly persons, it is essential to increase accessibility to medical institutions that can provide such services as door to door dental care. Current insurance policies, funding for denture insurance, and free denture and denture-upgrade programs desperately need to be expanded. Therefore, to improve effectively the quality of life for the elderly with physical debilities civil dental medical resources should be encouraged to provide inclusive and prevention-focused medical care. In the public domain, door to door dental care services and cooperation with civil dental care resources need to be improved to increase impartial accessibility to dental medical institutions.
Objectives : The quality of service is considered as the difference between services that customers perceive and expect by using SERVQUAL model and the basic data for the efficiency of management of dental hospital and clinics, the differentiation strategies of dental medical institutions and the improvements on quality of service are provided. Methods : Subjects were 469 patients who visited six dental hospitals and clinics in Daegu-Gyeongbuk regions. Questionnaire consisted of five items such as type, reliability, responsiveness, certainty and empathy properties. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program in this study. Results : Women had high satisfaction scores of medical services in certainty and empathy properties. 40s and higher had the highest score in the type property. 30s had high score in the certainty property. For expected service satisfaction, 30s had the highest score in dental practitioners and administrative staffs. For reuse of current medical institution and intent for recommendation, certainty property and factor of dentist and dental practitioners had high scores. Additionally, reliability and responsiveness properties were statistically significant. Conclusions : Medical institutions should make every effort to get the dentists or dental practitioners have the medical knowledge at a high level, a kindness for patients and trust from patients.
