  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare clinical examination of dental caries and secondary caries with panoramic examination. and to examine bone lesions and dental anomaly of unerupted state. Materials and Methods: In this study. clinical records and panoramic radiographs were available for 89 first grade students in elementary school. Dental caries of occlusal surfaces. proximal surfaces. and buccolingual surfaces were examined. Secondary caries was examined too. In addition. the central lesion and dental anomaly of unerupted state were examined in panoramic radiographs. Results: The obtained results were as followed: 1. Carious detectability of clinical examination in occlusal and buccolingual surface was higher than that of panoramic examination. but it is statistically insignificant(p>0.05). In proximal surface. carious detect ability of panoramic examination was higher than that of clinical examination. and it is statistically significant(p<0.01). 2. In contrast to clinical examination only. when the two examination methods were combined. there was additional detection of dental caries(26.7% in occlusal surface. 48.2% in proximal surface. 33.3% in buccolingual surface. and 38.3% totally). 3. In detection of secondary caries. panoramic examination had lower ability than clinical examination in all three surfaces. but in case that both methods were combined. totally 36.0% extra carious lesions were detected. 4. In panoramic examination. detectability of secondary caries in upper teeth is lower than lower teeth. 5. In panoramic examination. it was possible to detect the central lesions and dental anomalies of unerupted state which cannot be detected in clinical examination. Conclusion: It is useful to combine the panoramic examination with clinical examination in order to increase carious detectability and to evaluate the central lesions and dental anomalies of unerupted state

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the actual state of dental hygienist's behavior for infection control during dental practice and radiologic examination and to evaluate the dental hygienist's awareness of the importance of infection control in dental office. Methods : A survey on 218 dental hygienists was carried out. The respondents to complete a questionnaire were the dental hygienists who were in dental office on Gwang-ju area or attended complementary training conducted by the Seoul Branch of Korean Dental Hygienists Association in April 2010. The data were collected and analyzed with $x^2$ test, t-test, ANOVA using SPSS program. Results : The ratios of educational experience for infection control in dental practice and radiologic examination room accounted for 87.6% and 30.3% respectively. Behavior degree of mask-wearing in the dental practice and radiologic examination room were $4.60{\pm}0.70$ and $3.77{\pm}1.09$ respectively. Behavior degree of glove-wearing in the dental practice and radiologic examination room were $4.40{\pm}0.91$ and $3.68{\pm}1.17$ respectively. In case of the relation between educational experience and behavior degree in mask-wearing or glove-wearing, there was no significant difference in the performance of mask or glove wearing during dental practice, and mask-wearing during radiologic examination. However, there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the performance of glove-wearing during radiologic examination, which revealed that behavior degree between the respondents having educational experience and the others no having it were $3.92{\pm}1.19$ and $3.58{\pm}1.14$ respectively. The surface disinfection control for radiation and protective equipments used in radiologic examination room was done by occasional needs without premeditated schedules. Conclusions : The result of this study shows lower behavior degree during radiologic examination compared with one during dental practice. We suggest that there are needs to raise the awareness of infection control and to improve infection control behavior, and through this study, the importance of education was verified.

A questionnaire survey was conducted on 195 dental hygienists, and the dental hygiene assessment items examined were 6 types of dental history, medical history, vital signs measurement, extraoral examination, intraoral soft tissue examination, andtissue examination. As a result of the study, the item with the highest percentage of performers was 92.8% of dental history, and the lowest item was extraoral examination 57.9%. And, dental clinics were higher than dental hospitals and university hospitals in all dental hygiene assessment categories, and in particular, performance rates of extraoral examination and intraoral soft tissue examination were higher in dental clinics. Considering the overall high rate of dental hygiene assessment through this study, it is necessary to discuss the legal work of dental hygienists and to reflect the insurance fee.

  • Background: This study was aimed at investigating the perception of the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth of the dental hygiene students in the mock national board examination. Methods: SPSS 25.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics) was used to perform the independent t-test for the recognition level of dental hygiene students in the interdisciplinary practical national board examination. A p-value < 0.05 was set to indicate statistical significance. Results: Participants showed a high recognition level for the requirement of measuring the periodontal pocket depth without any difference among disciplines. When periodontal pocket depth measurement was included in the national board examination, the educational and clinical work of dental hygienists was expected to be unified, and the professionalism of dental hygienists was expected to be strengthened. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the feasibility of introducing periodontal pocket depth measurement in the practical national board examination for dental hygienists should be reviewed by a group of experts.

  • Objectives: Receiving proper dental care plays a significant role in maintaining good oral health. We investigated the relationship between regional deprivation and dental care utilization. Methods: Multilevel logistic regression was used to identify the relationship between the regional deprivation level and dental care utilization purpose, adjusting for individual-level variables, in adults aged 19+ in the 2008 Korean Community Health Survey (n=220 258). Results: Among Korean adults, 12.8% used dental care to undergo examination and 21.0% visited a dentist for other reasons. In the final model, regional deprivation level was associated with significant variations in dental care utilization for examination (p<0.001). However, this relationship was not shown with dental care utilization for other reasons in the final model. Conclusions: This study's findings suggest that policy interventions should be considered to reduce regional variations in rates of dental care utilization for examination.
