The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between characteristics of obesity and oral diseases by sex and grade. To achieve this, a survey was carried out on 830 students at just an elementary school in Chungnam area. The results of this study are as follows. First, the relationship between dental caries and malocclusion prevalence according to obesity by sex and grade showed that there was no difference between dental caries and malocclusion prevalence by sex, and dental caries prevalence by grade. Second, the difference in the level of dental health according to obesity showed that overweight students had more both caries teeth and loss teeth than normal students. Third, the relationship between obesity and the level of dental health showed that overweight students had many caries teeth and loss teeth. In particular, obesity had higher relationship with caries teeth than loss teeth. As the childhood is the period of time when the range of socialization is extended to schools from families, schools are important life zones for children. Consequently, the continuous and intensive instruction of health problems in schools needs to be comprehensively approached in terms of education.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the level of systemic disease-related knowledge among dental hygienists and analyze the effect on their job performance, empowerment, and satisfaction to provide basic data for expanding education on systemic diseases among dental hygienists and improving their job performance, empowerment and satisfaction. Methods: A survey was conducted among dental hygienists working in Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do region, South Korea, from October 27 to November 10, 2020, with a total of 245 questionnaires included in the final analysis. Results: Results of analysis revealed an average score for systemic disease-related knowledge among dental hygienists of 16.53±3.33 points and the higher the systemic disease-related knowledge, the higher the job performance, empowerment, and satisfaction. The higher the coronary artery disease knowledge and respiratory and infectious disease knowledge, the higher the job performance, and the higher the respiratory and infectious disease knowledge, the higher the job empowerment and job satisfaction. Conclusions: This study revealed that the higher dental hygienists' level of systemic disease-related knowledge, the higher their job performance, empowerment, and satisfaction. Therefore, this study suggests that dental hygienists' education on systemic disease-related knowledge should be expanded, and diverse systemic disease education programs should be developed for application in clinical practice.
Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a gingival manifestation of systemic mucocutaneous disorders such as mucous membrane pemphigoid, oral lichen planus, and pemphigus vulgaris. The lesion is very painful, so affects the patient's ability to do proper oral hygiene practices. This may be a potential risk factor for long-term periodontal health. However, there is some controversy about the relationship between the existence of DG and periodontal status. Although the correlation between DG-associated diseases and periodontal status is not to be certain, early diagnosis and appropriate treatment including adequate plaque control and removal of local factors is very important for preventing the progression of diseases and destruction of periodontal tissues.
The gingiva consists of an epithelial layer and an underlying connective tissue layer. The oral epithelium is a keratinized, stratified, squamous epithelium. The epithelium can be divided into the following cell layer: basal layer, prickle cell layer, granular cell layer and keratinized cell layer. The desquamative disease of gingiva means exfoliative diseases of epithelial layer on the gingiva. The chronic desqumative gingivitis is usually related to the dematologic disorders that produce cutaneous and mucous membrane blisters. The cicatricial pemphigoid and lichen planus are representative diseases of the dermatologic cases. Patients may be asymptomatic or symptomatic. When symptomatic, their complaints range from a mild burning sentation to an severe pain. The clinical examination must be considered with a thorough history, and routine histologic and immunofluorescence studies. A systemic approach needs to achieve accurate diagnosis and treatment of the gingival desquamative diseases.
Mess removal, electrocoagulation, cryosurgery are conventional methods in the treatment of various oral mucosal diseases. However, there are several problems or complication during or after surgery using conventional tools. Recently, LASER gradually become useful tool in the surgery of oral mucosal diseases. Of the LASER, carbon dioxide-mediated LASER is widely used one. Carbon dioxide LASER has many advantages such as good bleeding control, decreased damage to adjacent tissue, decreased pain and swelling, reduced scar formation, even bacteriocidal effects. In this reports, the author describe pros and cons of LASER, especially focused on carbon dioxide, and shed light on the field of LASER application in treatment of various oral mucosal diseases.
Author has made the studies on the pH of pus in the 53 suppurative disesed patients who had admitted to department of ora surgery, Infirmary of Schoo of Dentistry, Seoul National University. The results were obtained as follows; 1. The average pH of pus in the patients with suppurative oral diseases was 6.46 and the pH of pus was ranging 5.0 to 7.2. 2. The pH value of pus was not significant between the males(pH: 6.58) and females (pH: 6.40). 3. The pH vaule of pus in patients treated by antibiotics trend to slightly alkaline than that of untreated patients. 4.The pH vaule of pus in the pericoronitis, periodontal abscess and other localized oral infections were slightly alkaline than buccal abscess and osteomyelitis, and acute suppurative diseases of jaws was more acid than chronic diseases. In general, it was seemed the early stages of inflammation was alkaline, and the later stages was acid.
Periodontitis is the most prevalent noncontagious disease. Periodontal probing for measuring probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL) has been an important diagnostic tool to determine the presence and severity of periodontal diseases. For probing reproducibility, adroit probe handling with constant force is required.
