  • This study was based on the experience of dental hygienists' role conflict, and attempted to grasp the nature of the dental hygienist role conflict factor, constituent factor and coping. Giorgi's phenomenological method was used to analyze data collected through in-depth interviews with nine dental hygienists working in a dental clinic. The analysis revealed three central meanings: task scope, role conflicts, and role conflict management style and limitations. In the first category, task scope, the range of the legal scope, and the duties performed by the dental hygienist differed slightly. The second category included role conflict due to interpersonal relationship, work, work environment, competence, and identity as a professional because of role conflict. The third category included the role conflict management style and limitations. Dental hygienists tried to solve the role conflict situation through various efforts. In the face of the reality that the conflict is not solved despite such efforts, the dental hygienists felt the limitation and chose to leave. Dental hygienists are dissatisfied with their roles because of confusion regarding professional values and lack of awareness of the professional workforce due to differences between legal scope and actual practice. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a tool to quantitatively measure the level of role conflict in dental hygienists and to conduct follow-up studies on the effects of coping strategies by role conflict situations.

  • This study was designed to analyze the effect of servicescape and human service quality on patients' internal response and their behavioral intention in dental care organizations. Self-administered survey questionnaires with structured instruments were developed, and a total of 226 responses were used for statistical analyses using SPSS Windows version 18.0 program and AMOS 18.0 program. Major findings of the study are as follows. First, among other servicescape components, air condition environment was found to have a positive effect on patients' cognitive and physiological responses, while signals and symbols had a positive effect on cognitive and emotional responses. Second, the competence, among other factors of the human service quality, had positive influence on cognitive and emotional responses, while customer understanding affected positively on emotional response. Third, none of the servicescape components showed a direct effect on patients' behavioral intention, but their influence was mediated by internal responses. However, customer understanding, among other human service quality factors, had a direct effect on patients' behavioral intention. Fourth, emotional response, among other internal response factors, proved to have positive influence on behavioral intention. Results from this study suggest that dental care service providers can increase their competitiveness and customer satisfaction by understanding and improving the most important areas of servicescape and human service quality.

In order to achieve these purposes, 127 senior students of the Dental Hygiene Department, Kwangju Health College took part in this study to examine the satisfaction for a study course, a lab, professors, a college, and subjects. The following results were obtained. 1. The overall satisfaction for the Dental Hygiene Department was 2.83 and the highest dissatisfaction factors included difficult subjects and non-aptitude. The overall satisfaction for professors was 3.33 and students wanted professors' human contact with students and a well-prepared lecture. The overall satisfaction for college life was 2.65, suggesting not very high satisfaction, and the highest dissatisfaction factors included similar life to high school and surrounding environment. 2. The overall satisfaction for theory was 3.83 and for practice was 3.91 in oral prophylaxis. While the highest satisfaction was found in 'the objective and direction of class' and 'class and a supplementary lesson in not giving a lecture', the lowest satisfaction was found in 'experience in reading textbook-related materials or books'. 3. The correlation of the satisfaction of theory and practice of oral prophylaxis was examined. The satisfaction of oral prophylaxis theory was positively correlated with a school course, professors, and college, while the satisfaction of oral prophylaxis practice was positively correlated with a school course, professors, college, satisfaction of oral prophylaxis theory, and present health condition(p<0.05). 4. Factors influencing the satisfaction for the theory of oral prophylaxis included professors, while factors influencing the satisfaction for the practice were statistically significant in professors and health condition(p<0.05). Based on these results, in order for professional dental hygienists to be developed as professionals serving society, it is recommended to enhance the satisfaction for an oral prophylaxis subject and that professors should provide warm-hearted support and become a role model as an educator.
