  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rigidity of post core systems on stress distribution by the theoretical technique, finite element stress-analysis method. Three-dimensional finite element models simulating an endodontically treated maxillary central incisor restored with a zirconia ceramic crown were prepared and 1.5 mm ferrule height was provided. Each model contained cortical bone, trabecular bone, periodontal ligament, 4 mm apical root canal filling, and post-and-core. Six combinations of three parallel type post (zirconia ceramic, glass fiber, and stainless steel) and two core (Paracore and Tetric ceram) materials were evaluated, respectively. A 50 N static occlusal load was applied to the palatal surface of the crown with a $60^{\circ}$angle to the long axis of the tooth. The differences in stress transfer characteristics of the models were analyzed. von Mises stresses were chosen for presentation of results and maximum displacement and hydrostatic pressure were also calculated. An increase of the elastic modulus of the post material increased the stress, but shifted the maximum stress location from the dentin surface to the post material. Buccal side of cervical region (junction of core and crown) of the glass fiber post restored tooth was subjected to the highest stress concentration. Maximum von Mises stress in the remaining radicular tooth structure for low elastic modulus resin core (29.21 MPa) was slightly higher than that for high elastic modulus resin core (29.14 MPa) in case of glass fiber post. Maximum displacement of glass fiber post restored tooth was higher than that of zirconia ceramic or stainless steel post restored tooth.

  • In order to evaluate the fitness and the degree of rounding of porcelain margins in collarless metal cermic restorations, collarless metal ceramic restorations were fabricated with shoulder margins of 90 and 120 degress, each consisting of ten specimens, on master dies through the direct lift technique. And ten metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder 90 degrees were fabricated. All specimens were embedded in resin and sectioned longitudinally. The sections were observed under a stereomicroscope and photographed(${\times}$200). The labial marginal gap between the die and the porcelain margin were measured with a scale. The space between the porcelain margin and the die, that is formed from marginal rounding and cementation were calculated with a computer coordinating area curvimeter. The following results were obtained. 1. There was no statistical difference between the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations and marginal fitness of metal ceramic restoration. 2. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in the fitness of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic resorations. 3. Collarless metal ceramic restorations with a shoulder of 90 degrees and 120 degrees showed significantly more labial marginal rounding than metal ceramic restorations. 4. There was no statistical difference between a shoulder of 90 and 120 degrees in rounding of porcelain margin of collarless metal ceramic restorations. According to the results, rounding of porcelain margins can be observed in collarless metal ceramic restorations. Thus, there is a need for improvement in dental materials and techniques to minimize this problem, Furthermore, care should be exercised during the clinical procedure.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic study was to measure the degree of conversion (DC) of dual-cured resin cements light-irradiated through zirconia ceramic disks with different thicknesses using various light-curing methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Zirconia ceramic disks (KT12) with three different thicknesses (1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 mm) were prepared. The light transmittance of the disks was measured using ultraviolet visible near-infrared spectroscopy. Four different light-curing protocols were used by combining two curing light modes (Elipar TriLight (standard mode) and bluephase G2 (high power mode)) with light-exposure times of 40 and 120 seconds. The DCs of the two dual-cured resin cements (Duo-Link and Panavia F2.0) light-irradiated through the disks was analyzed at three time intervals (3, 7, and 10 minutes) by FTIR spectroscopy. The data was analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (${\alpha}$=.05).Two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test were used to analyze the 10 minute DC results. RESULTS. The 1.0 mm thick disk exhibited low light transmittance (<25%), and the transmittance decreased considerably with increasing disk thickness. All groups exhibited significantly higher 10 minute DC values than the 3 or 7 minute values (P<.05), but some exceptions were observed in Duo-Link. Two-way ANOVA revealed that the influence of the zirconia disk thickness on the 10 minute DC was dependent on the light-curing methods (P<.001). This finding was still valid even at 4.0 mm thickness, where substantial light attenuation took place. CONCLUSION. The curing of the dual-cured resin cements was affected significantly by the light-curing technique, even though the additional chemical polymerization mechanism worked effectively.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate the chemically improvement of metal-ceramics bond strength in the course of recasting Ni-Cr metal composite system with 10wt.%, 20wt.% and 30wt.% aluminum respectively. We have tested the bond strength, micro-structure, chemical composition of each metal composites and metal- ceramic bond interfaces by 3-point bending strength tester, SEM and EDS. We have made the conclusions through this study as follow: 1. The most suitable amount of aluminum to the Ni-Cr metal composite recasting is 20wt. % for improving metal-ceramics bond strength with debonding strength value of 49.54 kgf/mm2. 2. The aluminum must be changed to small spread alumina like phases and second aluminum-metal composites phases in the morphology of Ni-Cr metal composite system by adding during it's casting. These second phases have inclined functional oxide phases mixed with metal elements and they must take roll to improvement of metal-ceramics bond strength. 3. In the case of 30wt.% aluminum appended to Ni-Cr metal composite system, an excess of second inclined functional oxide phases produce cracks and spalling of them apart from it's base material. It must be a important factor of reduction of metal-ceramics bond strength.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of four computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) blocks repaired with composite resin using three different surface treatment protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Four different CAD/CAM blocks were used in this study: (1) flexible hybrid ceramic (FHC), (2) resin nanoceramic (RNC), (c) polymer infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) and (4) feldspar ceramic (FC). All groups were further divided into four subgroups according to surface treatment: control, hydrofluoric acid etching (HF), air-borne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide (AlO), and tribochemical silica coating (TSC). After surface treatments, silane was applied to half of the specimens. Then, a silane-containing universal adhesive was applied, and specimens were repaired with a composite, Next, µSBS test was performed. Additional specimens were examined with a contact profilometer and scanning electron microscopy. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and Tukey tests. RESULTS. The findings revealed that silane application yielded higher µSBS values (P<.05). All surface treatments were showed a significant increase in µSBS values compared to the control (P<.05). For FHC and RNC, the most influential treatments were AlO and TSC (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Surface treatment is mandatory when the silane is not preferred, but the best bond strength values were obtained with the combination of surface treatment and silane application. HF provides improved bond strength when the ceramic content of material increases, whereas AlO and TSC gives improved bond strength when the composite content of material increases.

  • For abutment of dental implants, (Y, Nb)-TZP/Alumina composites were prepared by addition of 10-90 vol% alumina at an interval of 10 vol% into tetragonal zirconia solid solution which consists of 90.24 mol% Zr $O_2$, 5.31 mol% Y$_2$ $O_3$, and 4.45 mol% Nb$_2$O$\_$5/. Biaxial flexure strength and fracture toughness of composite were optimized by adding 10 vol% alumina, which resulted in 900 MPa and 8.9 MPam$\^$1/2/, respectively. The composite did not undergo low temperature degradation even after autoclave treatment at 200$^{\circ}C$ for 10 h. 65 of (Y, Nb)-TZP/Alumina composite abutments were employed into 40 patients and any adverse reaction, screw loosing, or fracture of abutments was not observed for the span of 2 years, indicating that the ceramic abutments can be safely used for restorations.

  • PURPOSE. The objective of this study was to compare the fracture toughness ($K_{Ic}$) obtained from the single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) and the fractographic analysis (FTA) of a glass-infiltrated and a zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. For each material, ten bar-shaped specimens were prepared for the SEVNB method ($3mm{\times}4mm{\times}25mm$) and the FTA method ($2mm{\times}4mm{\times}25mm$). The starter V-notch was prepared as the fracture initiating flaw for the SEVNB method. A Vickers indentation load of 49 N was used to create a controlled surface flaw on each FTA specimen. All specimens were loaded to fracture using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5-1 mm/min. The independent-samples t-test was used for the statistical analysis of the $K_{Ic}$ values at ${\alpha}$=0.05. RESULTS. The mean $K_{Ic}$ of zirconia ceramic obtained from SEVNB method ($5.4{\pm}1.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$) was comparable to that obtained from FTA method ($6.3{\pm}1.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). The mean $K_{Ic}$ of glass-infiltrated ceramic obtained from SEVNB method ($4.1{\pm}0.6\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$) was significantly lower than that obtained from FTA method ($5.1{\pm}0.7\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$). CONCLUSION. The mean $K_{Ic}$ of the glass-infiltrated and zirconia ceramics obtained from the SEVNB method were lower than those obtained from FTA method even they were not significantly different for the zirconia material. The differences in the $K_{Ic}$ values could be a result of the differences in the characteristics of fracture initiating flaws of these two methods.
