Automatic Contrast Enhancement by Transfer Function Modification

  • In this study, we propose an automatic contrast enhancement method based on transfer function modification (TFM) by histogram equalization. Previous histogram-based global contrast enhancement techniques employ histogram modification, whereas we propose a direct TFM technique that considers the mean brightness of an image during contrast enhancement. The mean point shifting method using a transfer function is proposed to preserve the mean brightness of an image. In addition, the linearization of transfer function technique, which has a histogram flattening effect, is designed to reduce visual artifacts. An attenuation factor is automatically determined using the maximum value of the probability density function in an image to control its rate of contrast. A new quantitative measurement method called sparsity of a histogram is proposed to obtain a better objective comparison relative to previous global contrast enhancement methods. According to our experimental results, we demonstrated the performance of our proposed method based on generalized measures and the newly proposed measurement.

  • Materials used for the inks in the printing industry is an important material following the paper. The composition of the ink is pigment and organic solvents. However, Ink is used in a variety of chemicals, they are classified as non-green. Therefore, rosin-modified phenolics manufactured by the reaction of phenol and formaldehyde can take the place of eco-phenol free resin and by experiment density, gloss, trapping, contrast and dot gain of printing has been studied as printability. The result of study can support that the properties of printing using eco-phenol free resin such as density, gloss, contrast and trapping is similar to existing ink. In the part of dot gain, the result is excellent. So we were thought to be able to improve some characteristics such as dispersion of black ink, that will be possible for the field applicability.

Measuring the matter energy density and Hubble parameter from Large Scale Structure

  • We investigate the method to measure both the present value of the matter energy density contrast and the Hubble parameter directly from the measurement of the linear growth rate which is obtained from the large scale structure of the Universe. From this method, one can obtain the value of the nuisance cosmological parameter $\Omo$ (the present value of the matter energy density contrast) within 3% error if the growth rate measurement can be reached $z >3.5$. One can also investigate the evolution of the Hubble parameter without any prior on the value of $H_0$ (the current value of the Hubble parameter). Especially, estimating the Hubble parameter are insensitive to the errors on the measurement of the normalized growth rate $f \sigma_8$. However, this method requires the high $z$ ($z >3.5$) measurement of the growth rate in order to get the less than 5% errors on the measurements of $H(z)$ at $z \leq 1.2$ with the redshift bin $\Delta z = 0.2$. Thus, this will be suitable for the next generation large scale structure galaxy surveys like WFMOS and LSST.

Oral contrast media for computed tomography of canine pancreas

  • Barium suspension, oral iodine contrast medium and water were applied in eight dogs to evaluate (1) distension of gastrointestinal tract, (2) the effect of the oral contrast media on the identification of the pancreas from surrounding organs, and (3) image quality and the presence of artifacts in canine pancreas computed tomography (CT) images. Oral iodine contrast medium, gastrografin, produced significant artifacts that deteriorated the CT images of the pancreas. The use of water did not provide the fullness of the gastrointestinal lumens. Barium suspension was effective for the identification of the pancreas from the surrounding gastrointestinal tract, without significantly increasing image noise. Barium suspension can be used as an optimal contrast medium that will not cause an adverse effect on the pancreatic density and image quality.

Barium 조영제의 농도 차이가 PET 검사에 미치는 영향 (Influence on PET Exam Caused by Density Differences of Barium-sulfate Contrast Media)

  • Purpose: The evaluation of SUV (Standardized Uptake Values) for quantitative analysis in PET exam is the most significant. In PET exam, we make attenuation correction images by using $^{68}Ge$, $^{137}Cs$ or CT data. At this time, a distorted attenuation map affects quantitative analysis. After the exam using barium-sulfate and high density of barium contrast make attenuation map distorted. And then it brings bed influences on SUV. The aim of this study is to verify the relationship between high density barium-sulfate and SUV in PET exam. Materials and Methods By using $^{18}F$-FDG, we made barium-sulfate powder, density of 0, 1.5, 3, 5, 10 and 15% respectively and acquired PET and PET/CT images per each density. And we examined SUV variations from PET and PET/CT images according to differences of barium's density. Moreover, we finally calculated SUV causing variations in HU (Hounsfield Units) values to justify whether the differences of barium density bring any changes in PET/CT exam. Results: From PET images acquired from transmission scan with $^{68}Ge$, we got SUV figures from 6.46 to 6.8 in barium density between 0 to 15 percent. On the other hand, In PET images acquired from Tx scan that using CT, SUV was 6.77 to 23.73, derived from the same barium density. And CT HU values range from 29 to 2004. Conclusion: PET images from Tx data using $^{68}Ge$ weren't affected by barium density and had no differences in SUV. But in the PET/CT images using CT Tx data, there's considerable variations in HU and SUV values according to a difference of barium density in HU values. To perform a precise examination, barium sulfate should be removed from a human body before performing a PET exam.

CT 조영제를 이용한 친환경적인 방사선 차폐에 관한 연구 및 고찰 (Research and Consideration of Eco-friendly Radiation Shielding using CT Contrast Agent)

  • 방사선 촬영 조영제는 특수 조영을 필요로 하는 병원에서 인체 장기 및 특정한 부위 검사를 촬영할 때 흔히 쓰이고 있다. 특히 컴퓨터단층촬영(Computed Tomography CT) 조영제는 요오드(Iodine)라는 물질이 혼합되어 있는데 이것이 방사선의 에너지를 흡수하면서 방사선 영상 이미지에서 하얀색으로 보이게 되어 영상의 화질을 더욱 개선시킨다. 또한, 혈관에서 혈액과 같이 움직이는 CT 조영제는 근육 및 물과 확연히 구분을 시켜주고 있어 조영제를 병원에서 많이 사용하고 있다. 이러한 조영제는 엑스레이를 흡수하지만, 엑스레이를 흡수하기 위해서는 밀도가 높거나 방사선 흡수계수가 높아야 한다. 조영제가 혈관에 투입되기 때문에 밀도가 높으면 혈관에 무리가 가서 환자는 쇼크 상태가 오기 때문에 물과 비슷한 밀도를 맞춰야 하고 부작용에 대해 항상 신경을 써야한다. 또한, CT 조영제의 양을 환자의 체형에 따라 조절하면서 쓰고 남은 조영제를 폐기하는데 이것을 방사선 차폐재로 재활용을 할 수 있는 아이디어를 알아보고자 하였다. 조영제와 물을 혼합하는 방법에는 조영제 10%와 물 90%, 조영제 30%와 물 70%, 조영제 50%와 물 50%으로 3가지로 혼합하였다. CT 촬영은 광주광역시 U병원에서 GE사 4채널 CT를 사용하였으며 조영제와 물을 혼합하여 듀란병에 저장하였으며, 물 90%와 조영제 10% 혼합 액체의 밀도가 1.4 g/mL 정도일 때의 물질을 찾아보면 MYLAR라는 물질과 비슷한 것을 확인하였고, 물 70%와 조영제 30% 혼합 액체의 밀도가 1.76 g/mL일 때는 Polyvinylidene과 비슷한 물질인 것을 알 수 있었으며, 물 50%와 조영제 50%일 때 혼합 액체의 밀도는 2.3 g/mL일 때는 콘크리트(concrete) 밀도와 비슷한 밀도를 구성하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 실험의 결과를 통해서 물 50%와 조영제 50%를 혼합한 액체는 콘크리트 차폐와 비슷한 밀도를 가지고 방사선의 차폐가 가능하였다. 따라서 콘크리트 두께와 비교하여 조영제를 50% 이상 첨가한 두께를 이용한 차폐재를 만든다면 충분한 차폐재의 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

조영증강 초음파영상에서 밀도변화 데이터를 이용한 진단 파라미터 추출 기법 (Medical Parameter Extraction Using Time-Density Data in Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound Image Sequence)

  • 의료 진단 초음파영상에서 조영제의 전이시간과 확산패턴의 형태는 질환 및 병변을 분석하는 중요한 파라미터로 고려된다. 조영증강 초음파영상 분석과 관련한 기존의 대부분의 연구에서 대상 영역의 평균 명도 변화곡선을 기반으로 파라미터값을 추출한다. 그런데 이러한 명도 데이터는 조영제의 마이크로 버블 효과로 인하여 그 값이 왜곡될 수 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 조영증강 초음파 진단 파라미터의 추출 과정에서 그 정확도를 개선하기 위하여 명도값의 변화뿐만 아니라, 조영제의 영향을 반영하는 픽셀에 대한 밀도 정보를 보완적으로 활용하는 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 간 질환 진단 과정에서 병변의 윤곽선 추출과 병변의 특성분석을 위하여 조영제의 확산시점과 속도를 보다 정확하게 판별할 수 있게 한다. 실제 임상 데이터를 사용한 실험결과를 통하여, 제안된 방법이 파라미터 영상 생성기법에서 개선된 결과를 생성할 수 있음을 보인다.

Correlation of Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasonographic Features with Microvessel Density in Papillary Thyroid Carcinomas

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of contrast-enhanced ultrasonographic (CEUS) features with microvessel density (MVD) in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs). Materials and Methods: Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) was performed in 62 patients (17 men and 45 women) with PTC. Tomtec software was applied to analyze the time intensity curve of CEUS. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the level of MVD in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Then the relationship between quantitative feature and the level of MVD was analyzed using SPSS 16.0 software. Results: The mean peak intensity of PTC tissues was lower than that of peripheral thyroid parenchyma ($61.9{\pm}11.8%$ vs 100%, p<0.05). The MVDs of CD34 and CD31 antibodies staining were $38.0{\pm}6.1$ and $37.9{\pm}5.1$ respectively in 62 PTC samples. A significantly positive correlation was observed between peak intensity and MVD in PTC tissues ($P_{CD34}$<0.01, $r_{CD34}$=0.838, $P_{CD31}$<0.01, $r_{CD31}$=0.837). Conclusions: The peak intensity in CEUS could reflect the MVD in PTC tissues. Therefore, quantification of CEUS seems to be helpful for assessment of MVD in PTC tissues.

Primary Radiation Force to Ultrasound Contrast Agents in Propagating and Standing Acoustic Field

  • Primary radiation force on ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) in a propagating and standing acoustic field was explored. A specific ultrasound contrast agent $Albunex^{(R)}$ and $Optison^{(R)}$ were chosen for simulation. The model was developed based on a shelled bubble model proposed by Church. The numerical simulation suggests that bubble translational motion is more significant in therapeutic ultrasound due to higher intensity and long pulse duration. Even a single cycle of a propagating wave of 4 MPa at 1 MHz can cause a bubble translational motion of greater than $1{\mu}m$ which is approximately one tenth of capillary. Hence, UCA characteristics can be significantly changed in therapeutic ultrasound without rapid bubble collapses.

Methylcellouse를 이용한 소장조영 검사시 황산바륨의 농도(%W/V)와 투여량의 변화에 따른 영상의 비교 분석 (A Comparative Analysis of Images by Changing Density and Administrative Dosage of $BaSO_4$ in the Small Bowel Series Using Methylcellulouse)

  • Small bowel series using methylcellulose are considered a better technique than using other contrast media considering a significant decrease of transit time of $BaSO_4$ and that of the necessary time for the examination. We investigated the mean transit time of $BaSO_4$, maximum luminal diamenter of small bowel, optical density and flocculation frequency after adminstratting 100 ml of 120% $BaSO_4$ to 20 pts), 150 ml of 70% $BaSO_4$ to 20 pts and 200 ml of $BaSO_4$ with 600 ml of mechylcellulose. It was shown that the technique using 150 ml of 70% $BaSO_4$ had the best result. When we apply a adequate amount of density(w/v%), dosage to pts for small bowel series using MC, we can decrease an examination time and have the better image due to double contrast. It is considered that a more study to lower the density of 70% $BaSO_4$ is necessary.
